Modern Vintage Gamer: Online DRM has ruined Gran Turismo 7

it's a bullshit move by sony but whatever i don't have any sympathy for people who bought it.
It’s sitting at 87 on Metacritic. Can’t blame people for buying it, it’s the highest rated GT since GT4 in 2005.

Polyphony is the culprit here. They need to sort this out asap.

But critics should change the way they do reviews as well. Use a pending score until the launch.

The scores should be updated but as always that won’t happen.

All of this hate for GT7 is really confusing.

I enjoy playing the game – racing and tuning and taking pictures. Never have I felt the need to grind and I don't feel entitled to own a $5+ million car in the first couple weeks. Gran Turismo games have always been 200+ hours adventures for me so I'm confident that I'll eventually own all of the cars I truly desire, reduce payouts or not.

And even during the server maintenance, I had a great time doing arcade races. Oddly enough, the AI was actually better in that mode than during the campaign races, so I was actually having more fun during the outage. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The biggest problem here is that there’s an enjoyable game here. But always online, the mtx push, and bad AI with rolling start events is holding it back.

Seriously, lately all this forum does is whine, GT7 drm this, Battlefield 2042 that. Do you guys even play games anymore??

I love Gran Turismo. I don’t blindly ignore issues like some fanboys and console warriors though.

It looks great and I enjoy it. They deserve shit for hiding micro transactions from reviewers and already had like a 30 hour downtime with their always online game. They have fucked two patches already since launch.

What's good about SoT? It's the same GaaS model. It requires you to be online so if severs go down you can't play anything and sells "Ancient coins" for $30 so you can afford expensive shit nobody needs.
Exactly! Nobody 'needs'. Has absolutely no impact on me when I play SoT. I do not feel compelled to buy anything because I do not feel like I'm missing out or disadvantaged in any way.

If you are a player that likes to buy the pets or cosmetics, you spend to your heart's delight. And whilst you are doing that, you are supporting the developer. I'm doing my bit subscribing to Gamepass.

The game is constantly updated with new content. The road map for updates this year looks particularly good.

And... its GaaS, server maintenance is expected. Players are well informed before updates happen and its rare when the servers go down due to anything else.

But it's the same with the cars here it's just a collectathon just like SoT.

It's seems that a number of people have issue with the fact that a Single Player Campaign is online only.

Someone mentioned GaaS sucks.

Then someone replied with, not all GaaS suck.

I agreed.

Gotta disagree. All GAAS games suck. They are blatantly unfinished releases, bare bones, and slowly deal out content that should be available from the outset for any basic release. I should not have to wait 6 months to 2 years after a release to get a half decent product (which is exactly what happened with SoT).

ItsTheNew

I believe any game made before 1997 is "essentially cave man art."
When was the last time that this series had any sort of social cache? Unless you’re a 30+ year old boomer jdm enjoyer, who is keeping this loser ass, incompetent dev team employed?

From what I understand, they have never recovered from moving over to the ps3.

The game is the same as it was on review. What you on about?

Gotta agree, there is a great game in here but we as fans needs to demand that pd takes the always online element out of the single player game, I should be able to play gt7 campaign offline, hate that this is seeping into PlayStation first party games that usually don’t have this bullshit with single player content. Just arcade & music mode isn’t enough.

No. It wasn't. The MTX store was not available for reviewers. Multiplayer was not fully available for reviewers and the myriad of problems it has. Not to mention the always online bullshit.

But this just further proves how needless and worthless reviewers are in modern gaming. The only people who tend to put stock in them are mentally ill console warriors and children who need validation for their purchases.

What difference does it make if the mtx store was open or not?

The greedy MTX wasn’t there on the review code.
I’ve not started it after the latest patch but from what I’ve heard the grinding has become even worse now.

So why don't you play before make any judgement instead of hearing from 3rd party

With the amount of content now in SoT it would have taken years and years to release.

SoT did release with what would be considered barebones it was a new IP. But I can tell you now. A lot of players still had fun playing it.

However, I would not say that FH5 or FS2020 have been released in a barebones state.

I’ve played it after launch but not after the patch. Isn’t it more important that critics play the patched game if it has already changed two times since they played it?
What’s the Metascore 87 on the review code saying today? That a version of the game nobody can play anymore was great?

I'm beginning to think that critic reviews are mostly bogus. They all get free codes. And if they give the game a bad score, they will likely quit getting codes from that publisher. Its all so shady.
Stevivor didn't get a review code from Sony. It's even mentioned in his review.

I think the MTX is more to worry bout than the DRM cause most if not all games have DRM nowdays
Unless you talk about receiving patches, playing multiplayer or using subscription services then most games don’t have an online requirement, you might miss out on cloud saves though.

Good luck on getting all the cars.
People keep saying this but it’s like bro the game has like nine cars I actually want. The P1 is coincidentally one of them, but that’s the only car I “need” that isn’t priced pretty normal.

“Good for you, pal” yeah yeah; I just mean the entire narrative about the game economy is turbo-nerd shit like “How will I get every car?!?!” when I’m just not seeing it. I’ve had all the money I’ve needed so far, and frankly doing some little five- of ten-minute race and getting a cool $6500 for finishing 8th and hitting the wall ten times seems fine to me.

Which reminds me: this game lets you get away with absolute murder—smack a wall head-on at 110 mph and you lose about 2.5 seconds from your lap time. Hard to reconcile a game having a harsh economy when it also throws cars and money at you even when you fail.

thats the thing, the areas that were patched have nothing to do with the game's progression. in fact, you only unlock the ranch race at the end of the book menu, i think 37 or so, and its a separate tournament.

A lot of modern racing sims don't even require you to unlock stuff. You can buy the most complete edition of assetto corsa for 40$ (and for less than 10$ during sales) and get immediate access to all of its 178 cars + a vast sea of modded cars.
Project Cars 2, Dirt Rally 2, Beamng, Automobilista 2, many older sims also come with all of their content available to the player from the get go.

A lot of the people who play these sims aren't even interested in carrer modes, making this whole credit system a complete bother. And that doesn't mean the game can't have a compelling carrer mode for those who want one, as some of the games i mentioned do have interesting campaigns.

Heck, much like Gran Turismo, Dirt Rally 2 also has a carrer mode with a credits system that also happens to be always online to 'prevent cheating'. But the game makes all of its content available from the get go for offline players outside of the carrer, to let them create their own custom races and events. Why couldn't GT7 do the same?

We all knew Sony would pull this. They’ve been smart about letting MS take the heat like with paid online play and the always online backlash of the Xbox One. They play it like they are the good guys and then sneak the same shit in later.

Remember when Sony were the good guys for not charging for online multiplayer unlike 'the evil M$$$'? I 'member.

Can't really blame the media on this one because the MTX wasn't active until the day reviewers posted their reviews and moved on to the next game they were being used as a PR mouthpiece for.

True but if the gaming journalists (lol) had any integrity they would adjust their reviews based on what version the consumer is playing.

Lets face it we know why MTs were not available lol

Last night THREE times I got an offline message at the very end of the race, meaning I had to redo them again, including one whole tour. And this has been randomly happening since day one. WTF is this shit.

Fuck corporate suits, fuck monetization specialists, fuck the greed, fuck corporatism in general. As companies get bigger and bigger, you'll eventually start seeing these elements take over and just turn everything into shit. Has happend in the movie industry, has happened in the software industry and has been happening in the gaming industry as well.

This is why gatekeeping is a thing. Gaming was at its peak when it was looked at like a "loser" hobby. Once normies and huge corporations get involved in anything it gets ruined.

For sure. I miss being thought of as a nerd loser if it meant amazing games that shipped complete :(

GT7 has turned out to be the ultimate shit show… I wrote it off for myself as soon as we knew it was always online but it has turned out even worse than I thought.

If there isn’t some REAL large scale backlash from this release you can forget Sony ever fixing a damn thing ; gaming won’t be for us anymore.

No im talking about buying a digital game which means it has DRM so Steam/Xbox/Playstation/Switch digital games all have DRM unless you buy games from GOG but even then some games on there still have DRM so basically all digital and now even some singleplayer only game on a disc has DRM to we cannot escape from DRM to be honest

It’s not comparable at all, you can play digital purchases offline, in Steam you just switch to offline mode, not sure what you have to do on Xbox/PS/Switch, I can check tonight.

Being down for 30 hours was certainly annoying but shit happens, I didn't lose any sleep over it I just played something else for a day. Upon its return it was still as good as it was before. Sorry folks.

MVG is talking about another form of DRM protection where you cannot play offline but im talking bout the definition of a DRM

"digital rights management (DRM), protection of copyrighted works by various means to control or prevent digital copies from being shared over computer networks or telecommunications networks."

So basically all videogames nowdays have it from digital to even disc form since the data on the disc has to be installed to the hard drive or SSD and the disc basically act as the DRM key so it all DRM we cannot escape it

Wait ... There's no single player mode?????

The whole game is singleplayer but you need an online connection and their servers running in order for you to play it. Yes, let that sink in for a single player game lol.

NFS 2015 had the same thing but it made sense because anyone from your friends list or randoms could jump in your game and assist you while you are playing your SP content. In GT7 you literally have no interaction with anyone.

I mean holy shit dude. People need to ask for refunds and bomb sony’s email and phone lines with complaints.

If they do ever offer it, id take it. I played GTS 3 years in a row and didnt have these problems. And you always had a notification that servers will be down at a certain point so you would know always when not to play for an hour or so. Whats happening with GT7 is just annoying.
