More Brain Training maths problem/error

I was playing More Brain Training from Dr. Kawashima: How Old Is Your Brain? last night and in the Missing Symbols game came across the puzzle...

8_5_4 = -12.

Underscores are spaces to fill in with either maths symbol; +, -, x, or /.

I couldn't figure it out. The only thing I could get to was 5-8x4=-12. However, that involved rearranging the order of the numbers.

Help.

That's not -12.

Wait. Are we supposed to multiply 4x5 first which would give 20? Ok, well that certainly would provide -12 as an answer.

Yes, multiplication/division is analyzed before addition/subtraction in math equations due to order of operations.
