'Mortal Kombat' producer explains why you won't see Johnny Cage: "it felt weird to have a white actor be the hero of the story"

Think you guys are reading more into this than there actually is to it.

They need an audience-proxy character to basically be told what's going on and why. Said character obviously cannot be offed until they've finished being Basil Exposition, meaning that they are going to get a fair amount of screen time. Using Johnny in his typical goof mode kinda makes him Jack Burton (BTILC) and would have a major impact on the overall tone, making him the hero wouldn't be ideal either as it risks being very Chuck Norris.

Basically its a crutch for sloppy writing, where they are basically creating a character to fulfil a certain function.

Note the quote is "white actor be" not "white actor play" the hero of the story, very significant.

This seems like post hoc rationalization to try and get some good press from critics who will not be predisposed to liking this kind of thing.

He doesnt look chinese at all, like, at all.
Are bis parents hawaiian, or “hawaiian”?
According to Wikipedia, his mother is English and his father is Hawaian Native American/Chinese. So he is probably about a quarter Chinese.

Remember when this movie came out and no one cared after two days? I had forgotten it existed until this thread was bumped

I appreciate the irony of not wanting to use Johnny Cage as a main character because he's a white guy and apparently that's bad, but end up having a white guy be the best character in the entire movie by far anyway.
