MultiVersus is being played more than every other fighting game on PC combined and it's not even out of Early Access yet

The game of thrones character in the game already suggests otherwise. There's also a profanity menu option. Aside from that, promoting characters found in R rated movies to children through toys and other media has a long history.

Robocop isn't a great example of that as the franchise eventually was reduced to a kids franchise. Robocop 1 and 2 were rated R, but Robocop 3 was PG-13. Then they did a short-lived live-action TV show as well as a cartoon, which is what those toys are based on:

They actually made THREE separate Robocop animated series.

Game is amazing. Cant stop playing it. Servers are gonna be on fire today tho. I bought the basic founders pack too and i rarely buy shit like this if ever. Art and animations are 10/10 and the ringouts are really satisfying

Thanks for pointing that out, and I wasn't aware of that, but my point still stands. You said, "Robocop isn't a great example of that as the franchise eventually was reduced to a kids franchise." But that's my entire point. An R-rated movie character was repackaged and resold to children in a less violent form. That is a thing that happens. It doesn't matter if it's a toy series, a cartoon, or an NES era video game. It happens, and we will see likely continue to see "R-rated" characters added to Multiverses, just as we see them in other forms of children's media.

I'm genuinely surprised it's only sitting at 10k now, I thought with being fully free now (no stream watching or premium versions to buy to play) I thought it would've peaked today.

Not interested in the game myself, but I guess those that were interested have tried it out now?

Absolutely.

Reminds me of all the R-rated characters that's been added to Fortnite.

Multiversus will add a bunch of R-rated characters down the line.

Holy shit that reminds me C.O.P.S is it the same art people or copy cats?

Eh, I don't know if I'd say it's "super-popular IPs"? Batman is big, but him being a character in another fighter doesn't make it a blockbuster. After that you have GoT characters and Harley and I guess Shaggy is trendy weirdly? The Adventure Time and Steven Universe characters are big with gamers in a perfect demo but neither has sold a game by themselves to a great degree. And then you get into Tom and Jerry, or Bugs Bunny, or Wonder Woman, or other characters from the 1940s...

I think it's partly the meme culture and then it's the aggressive Twitch promotion of this (WB apparently went after streamers, knowing that both sides love giveaways) to hook players with a clever version of the F2P model where initial joiners have the idea that they're still getting something of exclusive value even though it'll ultimately be free. Plus the character unlock system keeps players persistent longer, hooking them to play an extended amount to get all the initial stuff.

On paper, MultiVersus looks like it's got little chance of standing out as more than just another forgettable Smash Clone for kids, but there's something to the rollout that is working.

I was never a HUGE fan of Smash Bros as I got burned on the Wii one buying into the hype of reviews saying it was vastly different. So I never bought another once since, because Nintendo games never go on any real sale only $55 CND which is TOO MUCH for Smash. This game presents the perfect opportunity to play the game while it's hot instead of having to wait until a sale as this game is free out of the gate.

I played last night for a few rounds, it's dumb mindless mashy fun, and if that's as deep as I go with it, then I'm ok with that because I paid nothing to access it.

There are more like me that either don't own a Switch or other Nintendo consoles but want to play a Smash style game because it's just dumb fun, that's all it's meant to be.

I agree that the hypeshitdemons are keeping this one going now because they're being paid either directly or in-directly, but I think after that dies down, if this game keeps adding fresh characters then it might have a chance.

Nintendo really shat in it's own mouth with charging for Smash characters.

I'm glad another company has made an attempt at this kind of game, I'd gladly welcome the same people to make a Mario Kart game seeing as Nintendo has NO intention of making a new one any year soon.

The same people won't be doing anything but this for quite some time, most likely, but there is this from another developer. Also free to play and supported with cosmetics.

I just tried it as Finn the Human but not feeling it, why even have side gaps if everyone can just jump back in again? Seems like the only/best way to get people out is by hitting them up.

Fighting game requires you to fight in order to win. 😲

I've been playing it all day. I definitely like it way more than all the other Smash like games, aside from Smash. That's still the best. But since Ultimate is old news, this is what I'll be occupying that space with. If they can get new characters in here with a good frequency I'll be sticking with it.

Like most fighting games, you have a lot more depth at higher level play than you might think at first. Sure you can wait until you've done 150+ damage and get an instant ring out, but you can also get a ring out much earlier by knocking someone off the platform and then following up with another attack. Smash works the same way.

Notice after the ring out, the player with over 100 damage is able to secure another ring out by playing aggressively.

Whatd you expect it's a smash game aka platform fighter no brain cells involved.
It doesn't require any more brain cells to play than any other fighting game from Soul Calibur to FighterZ.

But brain cells will def be "involved" if you want to play well or compete with anyone who really knows what they're doing.

looks fun i will be downloading that.

also are Tom + Jerry a team? they're really missing out on letting us have a fight between Tom and Jerry. I hate that little bitch Jerry and I would love to kick his ass as Tom.

yeah but all of their moves involve them fighting eachother, it's really geniusly made tbh.

Not surprised, the game looks fun and surprisingly polished. I’m all for more good Super Smash Bros.-type games.

Wouldn’t mind if Sony gave it another go either. All Stars was pretty fun imo.

Sucks don't you guys have chomos and mom murderers in your crew?

I don't really play Smash, I just am not stupid enough to claim it's not a game with a lot of depth to it 😘😘

also wtf is a chomo?

edit: google tells me it's prison slang... what were you in prison for to know that term? did ya diddle a kid? 😬

Enjoying it more than I thought I would and I've unlocked quite a few characters just from playing. Does enough to differentiate itself from Smash. Hope it has long legs!

Loving the game so far! I've got a level 15 Jake the Dog now- He and Aria Stark are my favorites. ❤️

It's pretty impressive watching high level play in this game, just as it is with Smash. People who think this game isn't skillful probably haven't gone against anyone with actual skill.

Normally I am not into these games but I am so hooked ngl.

Every time I say to myself that I just take a few matches, I end up having played for a few hours.

Reverse groomer.
A lot of Japanese developers ignored PC. Sega was good for it back during their console days but they killed their 2D franchises, all 3D franchises aside from VF, and shelved VF anyway to the point that the fan base just assumes Sega hates money. Even now, VF5US is locked to PS4 and is a nothing burger of an update.
to be fair, what's the point of playing Virtua fighter anyways when tekken exists? same concept but done better
