Don't need to own it to enjoy it. I'd rather rent from Nintendo for the few days I want to play it than buy it on the Wii U virtual console and lose it forever when the console dies.
So paying to play them on an old console is good, but paying to play them on the new one is bad?
If you don't have a Wii U then I guess buying a used one on eBay for $150 - $200 and then buying the 21 games available on the Wii U Virtual console would be one way. It's definitely cheaper and easier than just paying for access to games on an online service.
