Neowin: Microsoft appears to be focusing on Windows 11 for gaming over Xbox at India Comic Con.

The Comic Con 2022 is underway at the moment in India and tech giants like Dell, Intel, and Microsoft, among others, have been showcasing their latest and greatest tech here.

At the recent Comic Con Delhi, which was held between 9th to 11th December at NSIC Grounds, the Redmond firm had set up its booth, and interestingly, a Twitter user @oshayon, who visited the place was rather surprised when they saw that the section of the booth dedicated to gaming completely lacked any Xbox banners or advertisements or the like. The entire section was filled with promos for Windows 11 with taglines like saying "Play it your way" and "The perfect setup exists on Windows 11"

Another user chimed in the same thread echoing similar sentiments and posted a picture of the IGDC Hyberabad Xbox booth which also appears pretty bland and boring.

Thankfully for Xbox lovers, it was not all gloomy as yet another user, who happened to have visited the Bengaluru Comic Con held back in November, published a photo showing some dazzling game banners.

But of course, Windows 11 was here too, though there was an Xbox Game Pass promo as well clearly visible. In this Bengaluru picture, the Windows 11 tagline read "Gaming never looked so good Windows 11 is bringing it" and "Nothing rivals gaming on Windows 11". The banner also mentions gaming features like DirectStorage and AutoHDR.

Overall it looks like Microsoft's focus, at least in India, is to promote Windows 11 over Xbox to gamers and the core gaming audience. This could be an India-specific thing and Microsoft may have noticed its customer base there has a higher demand for gaming PCs than Xbox consoles. Or maybe Microsoft has not been happy with the Windows 11 adoption rate overall and wants more people to move to it.

Now it could be that Microsoft hasn't given up on India yet (they did recently raise the price of the Series consoles there last month iirc) and is waiting for the Series consoles to find their footing to push them more. But from the look of things it looks like Microsoft is leaning more on Windows for gaming in india than Xbox.

To be fair Sony doesn't have much of a sizable platform there either and neither does Nintendo, it's primarily a big mobile market, but consoles are gaining ground there.

Microsoft did have Xbox at a previous event but as noted in the article it was still leaning PC.

Phil needs to get the games and everything else ready and push hard in 2023, it's still early in the gen and it's not too late to start building a base in these Asian countries with smaller consoles industries. The S is supposed to be the entry-level option after all they should work on potentially lowering the price of it in India to be more accessible.

I also had no idea India had a comic com, looks packed. Though I'm curious why they were playing games displayed through laptops instead of desktop towers.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

As someone whose originally from this neck of the world, consoles are an extreme minority compared to PC because of 1. Piracy and 2. Regional prices on steam etc being way more economically friendly to people than the MSRP we pay in the west.

Makes sense. People already have PCs. Why try to sell a console when they already have a means of playing your games.

It's likely the average PC in India can't touch a Series S or possibly even a Switch in performance. Just enough for your Minecraft and Fortnite. India is actually a bigger mobile mobile market than anything. You would think MS would push Xcloud there instead.

To be fair the average PC in the US can't touch a Series S or Switch, either. Most aren't gaming PC's.

Most have specs that can do better than the Switch since at least 2020. The US has more accessible PC's with stronger even internal graphics than other countries in the same price ranges, or even with cheaper end AMDs.

Many PC's are accessible that are stronger than the Switch, we are talking about a 720p handheld with a mobile processor from 2017. cheaper phones are stronger than a Switch now.

In several other countries such a thing isn't as common or as accessible. Just looking at some Indian stores right now, and even Vietnam and converting to USD and looking at the specs, a celeron laptop with 12GB of ram and integrated is basically for them in accessibility as a 1060 here for US.

That's why mobile is taking off so much in these countries, and why there's a push for Televisions to enable easy projection from phone screen to TV, and why stores are selling controller support for phones so you can use it as a console with your TV.

Most PC's in the US weren't purchased after 2020

Yet many PC's were brought form late 2020 until now, and while those millions aren't earth shattering that's still a much larger number of PC's that would be brought elsewhere because of accessibility, and many of those PC's brought in that time are more capable than before. This is not true for several other countries.
