New Bloodborne Cut Content Video Reveals Shadows Of Yharnam Were Heavily Downplayed

The Shadows of Yharnam is a unique boss since they appear as regular enemies later on in the game. Players first encounter them at the very end of the Forbidden Woods, and later on near Mergo's Loft, in the Nightmare of Mensis area. The Shadows of Yharnam are one of the trickiest enemies to take down, as they have different abilities which prevent players from using the same strategy against all of them. While it is one of the fan-favorite enemies, they were much more menacing in the development stages.

Popular data miner Lance Mcdonald released a new video that showcases how the Shadows of Yharnam looked like during the early stages of development. In the retail version, we see the Shadows of Yharnam coming out of the fog, however, back in the Alpha stages, the Shadows of Yharnam had a much more animated intro. There used to be a door in the arena, and after interacting with it, players would find out that it is locked. However, the moment they turned back into the arena, the Shadows of Yharnam would spawn out of a purple aura, which is much more dramatic than the retail version.

Notably, the Shadows of Yharnam had this ability outside of the arena as well when they spawned as regular enemies, allowing them to become invisible for a short while. The attacks of the Shadow of Yharnam were significantly different as well, with the orb-wielding enemy sending projectiles of messengers to inflict frenzy on the player. Between throwing fire and frenzy projectiles, From Software also tried giving them the Executioner's Gloves, and that looked equally horrifying too. We also see the evolution of the name, starting off with Secret Watcher to Keeper of Clandestine before finally becoming the Shadows of Yharnam.

As far as the regular encounter is concerned, their placement in the Nightmare of Mensis area differed vastly, and they were assisted by Maneater boars and Clerics making the entire sequence significantly more difficult. Additionally, there was a fourth Shadow of Yharnam as well, which switched to the gun when players went far away from it, but it neither went out of the developer testing dungeons nor was it completely finished. Players already think that the old version of Shadows of Yharnam looked much more menacing, but it is not quite clear what made From Software implement the changes.

I like the original boss design, while somewhat chaotic it looks cool but I am sure in play testing would of been to much. The initial alpha intro of the bosses should of been kept, at least i like it more personally. The gun wielding shadow , glad it got cut, did not fit the theme. reducing the enemies was a smart move in that one area - stupid pig butt hole. Really interesting designs and changes.

Imagine if they went with the original encounter: coming across a locked door with no path ahead, you turn around, and suddenly see these three grim reapers emerging from a purple shadow. Talk about sinister and moody as fuck. They really should've went with that version instead of the one from the finished game.
