New Moderation Transparency - Ban History Page

We feel that transparency and accountability in moderation is a more important issue than ever in today’s online world. Our moderators are your allies – not enemies – and we wanted an additional system of checks and balances in place to make sure it stays that way going forward. Over the past few weeks, we’ve taken a look at some of the long-standing policies on NeoGAF and have decided it was time to implement additional transparency measures that users have been requesting.

Therefore we are happy to announce a new feature – the ability to see a history of the users that have been banned from the site, either temporary or permanent.

https://www.neogaf.com/bans/

This page will show a list of bans that have occurred on the site and is updated in real time. It will provide information about the user, a link to the post that resulted in the moderator action (if applicable), as well as the timing of the ban and the reason. A link to this page will be placed in the site footer.

There are a few things to note:
  • Temporary bans will be removed from this list once they are expired. We didn’t want this page to turn into a sort of “permanent record” that could potentially be used as ammunition against someone’s future arguments after they’ve returned.
  • Occasionally you will see banned users that appear to have no post history or their offending post has been deleted. Moderators have been instructed to delete posts that don’t follow the site’s guidelines for things such as pornography, piracy, spam or self-promotion. These sorts of infractions often result in the offending user being banned.
  • This ban history only goes back to July 25th, 2018. This is for technical reasons and ban history information prior to this date is not available.
Please remember – just because this information is now public doesn’t mean we will let people run afoul of the site rules regarding derailing threads by discussing bans. We still continue to value your feedback or criticism, but please do so in the appropriate place or by emailing support@neogaf.com.

We will continue to improve this new feature based on user feedback.

EviLore EviLore - Well done on the transparency efforts. I call this feature putting your money where your mouth is (again). Nice seeing things continue to improve in different ways.

You should ban me for a 2 or 3 days to make sure it's working properly, asshole.

Those long posts don't cover that red neck boy

Accumulated infractions and history of similar. Reported.

Great new system at play here, thank you.

Edit: oh goodie. I was wondering why Shiki didnt like my posts anymore. Guess now i know!

Awesome! I hope we don't get a lot of those, bans should be a last resort kind of defense against flat out shitposters or openly racist/homophobic/kiddy diddler apologists. I really like the maturity in the community in that we're able to reasonably disagree most of the time, it's just great.

Something akin to a rap sheet would be fun.
Ok your post gave me a different idea. Can we get "Given" changed to "Locked Up"? And "Expires" changed to "Paroled"? Obviously we would need a different term than permanent under paroled. But talking about bans in the context of neogaf jail would be fun for a while.

The funniest part about this is this is GAF history kinda repeating itself. Back in '00-'01 there was a thread about how many times one had been banned and one poster bragged about never getting hit with one before and then was promptly banned so he could be "part of the conversation".

I wish Dr. Parity had asked for a perm way sooner.

I had a good discussion going in a thread here and he was quoting my posts and calling me a Nazi. I thought a mod had stepped in when it got too much, but apparently he wanted to make a dramatic exit and spam the forum.

Oh man, TheMikado is gone? That's a huge loss : (

There's no post connected with it and the "reason" looks fairly civil. Did he ask to be banned?

Anyway, I really appreciate this transparency. This new page is great.

Yes, he "rage quit" during a discussion with Dunsparce (SP)? and Strange Headache after throwing out petty insults.

Some of these seem kinda harsh but I'm only saying that cause there are no links to said posts.

This is fucking amazing.

Bravo on making an elegant solution for such a common problem. This should be a standard practice on forums these days.

It's unfortunate that the bans only go back to July 25th.

Got a few folks that I followed who went RIP.

Also, because I'm hella nosy.

I still cant tell if Papa Papa was banned for saying “cunt” or not. Aussies want to know.

giphy.gif

The ban message was "never call another user a cunt, even in jest" and was initially for a week but was apparently lifted after a few days.

I thought I got Dragona'd, but then I realised that American mods probably aren't aware of the context of the word in Australia. It's as commonplace and harmless as the word "fanny" is in America, and its use ranges from a term of endearment (good cunt, sick cunt, etc.) to a mild pejorative. The way I used it against Nobody_Important Nobody_Important was to express my exasperation at his inconsistency and lack of logic in his arguments. The way he has been arguing lately (muh bad faith), I probably could've said worse, to be honest.

If they want to ban the word, whatever, but I recall a thread a few years ago (I think maybe EviLore himself posted it?) basically saying "cunt" was no longer on the banned word list, so transparency on this would be nice. Moreover, if we want to ban users for words that have different cultural contexts, I would request that we apply that to all such words.

Thought so. Yeah, it’s akin to an American calling someone a “jerk”. Both have sexual connotations, but somehow one is deemed worse than the other.

Still, I probably wouldn’t use it towards anyone on a non-Aussie forum, because they often don’t get it.

Where’s the protests for us oppressed Aussies huh? Where’s my shrill whistles and screaming idiots with coloured hair?

Man don’t be such a cunt. 😧

It’s like you have a stick up your fanny (by the way that’s a very British word, not North American.) USA would say ass.

There are many women who are very offended by the C word in both Canada and the USA though. It’s possibly the N word for Women.

Even in pillow talk it can be a deal breaker. Saying I’m gonna pound your pussy is fine, saying I’m gonna split your cunt.... Date over.

I get we all aren’t from the same place, or even same hemisphere, but we have to kind of figure out what is and isn’t ok as a species for all and go from there because this bickering over words has gone too far now, and even people that know what words mean, don’t know how to use them anymore.

Is it better if I use a soft -ny rather than a hard -t?

Is this an appropiate place for ban discussions then? I have two remarks regarding KevinKeene:
1. The ban message here wildly differs from the one he received, which was a pretty indecent "no pedos allowed".
2. The posting you are referring to does not seem to match the reasoning well, because he, as far as I understand this posting, does not talk about pedophilia in this posting, but generally says that crimes against children (not specifically sexual ones) are not worse or better than the equivalent crimes against adults.

Mind you, I do not agree with this, because the factor of helplessness is important to consider for children, but it is not something specific to sexual abuse of children. Interestingly, there are countries and cases where milder punishments are dealt out for violence against children in specific cases. E.g. in Germany until 1998 and still currently in Austria, deliberately killing your own child as a mother close to birth was / is met with a milder punishment than killing an adult.

I would like to suggest again that maybe Kevin's ban could be relaxed to a month of a full ban and then maybe a continued per-topic ban to ensure no uncomfortable situations arise again.

Haha. "Gonna split your cunt" is an expression I need to use more often!

Don’t do it. I thought I would be sexy, cuz of the stuff she said, but it brought everything to a screeching halt.

Apparently it was one step too far. I highly recommend avoiding those words.

This is some level of transparency I wish my government would implement.

The truth is they can’t. We all want that transparency, but it’s not possible in this day and age.

No matter how they vote on a bill or subject, they will always be subject to hate mail. There is never a subject that they represent the entire 100% of their constituents.

There just is not a subject, you can get 100 of the people to believe in. And that’s sad.
