New Speedrun World Record for Mario 64 Has Been Achieved

In a video uploaded to YouTube yesterday, user Kanno managed to beat the final boss of Mario 64 in a head spinning 6:27, beating the previous world record by about two seconds. What's even more impressive is that they were able to achieve this without collecting a single star, something that many will know should be impossible to do. However, using a series of skips, the runner was able to bypass certain areas that require a star.

Incredible still, the timer begins as soon as the main menu is shown. This means that the first minute of the run consists of starting the game and waiting for the opening cut scene to end. This is also not the first time they've pulled off such a skillful feat. Back in December 2021, Kanno was able to defeat Mario 64 with one star in a time of just 7:07. According to the video's description, they are now aiming to run the game again with a view to completing it in 6:25. The only concern they have with this run is the Video On Demand, or VOD, pauses for a second partway through, so there's a chance the attempt may not be officially acknowledged.

I don’t buy any “speed run” that is done via emulator. Speed runs should only be acknowledged if they’re done on the actual hardware with the standard controller. Emulators just leave open the door for way too many possibilities of cheating, etc.

Watching the video, it seems to run just a bit faster than normal. Peach seems to speak just a hair too fast. Are those glitches even present in the cartridge version?

Description says: "Cartridge: US.ver". So not emulator?

I always find it fascinating how speed runners learn to break the games to get faster times.

From 76 stars need to beat the game when it first came out, to 16 stars and now zero.

Amazing.

Good job this wasn't done on an emulator then, eh?

Besides which, these things are meticulously verified. People have been speedrunning Mario 64 more than long enough to know when someone's cheating.

The man pulled all the moves very close to perfection. Only the basement clip and one blj could be slightly better, but damn, this is gonna be reaaally hard to beat.

Sad bastards. You can picture these guys sat in their darkened rooms for 16 years slowly starving to death trying to shave a half second off their internet enemies best speedrun times between bouts of furious masturbation.
You laugh now, but once we have the metaverse, people like this will be the ultimate alpha males getting all the attention and all the virtual pussy.

Nobody is going to care about boring old meatspace anymore.

Haters want to sweep this record under the rug but Nintendo is so Mario-centric and tbh Mario took off big time with Mario 64, first 3D Mario.

Interesting, he could have shaved even more time running it on a JP cart. Running a US cart already puts you at a disadvantage.
