Through their report, Niko Partners has stated that in 2022 there were 396.4 million gamers in India. They also projected that players on PC and mobile spent a whopping $704.5 million. According to their analysis, there will be more than 630 million players in 2026, who will generate $1.4 billion in revenue. This analysis does not include revenue that was generated by Real Money Gaming.

Fastest Growing Market for Games

India has also been labelled as the 'fastest growing market in Asia-10'. This is done on the basis of revenue and the number of gamers. The country has also been dubbed as the second largest games market in the world behind China.

Majority of players comes from Mobile Gaming

India is primarily a mobile gaming market, with 98.8% of players in the country playing on the smaller platform. The mobile gaming market also accounts for 85% of total market revenue, which means that vast majority of players in India like to play and spend on mobile gaming.

Moreover, an average of 14.1 hours per week is spent on gaming on mobile. India also has the highest proportion of mobile gamers across Asia-10 region, with players spending over 5 hours per week on gaming. The tendency to pay has also increased with higher number of spenders in the country.

2023 will not be as big as 2022

It has also been understood that the growth rate in 2023 will be lower than 2022, as it will include the full year impact of BGMI ban. The growth rate will fall further if more mobile games are banned in 2023. Check out what Lisa Hanson, President of Niko Partners, had to say about the Indian Games Market:

“India has quickly become one of the most important markets that we track and is the fastest growing market by both revenue and gamers in the Asia-10 region. India’s nearly 400 million gamers account for over half of the 788 million gamers in Asia-10 and are a formidable force to be understood and served by developers and publishers.”

Mobile gaming in India is huge. And that is mainly due to how available the phones are, and the minimum presence of consoles.

dont want to sound racist, since some of my family comes from that region, but none of them are spending a dime on legal games. if games can be bought, they will pirate them.
we see more and more middle/high-income indians here in sweden and germany who are able to afford stuff, but they are a completely different class than the bunch of poor people over there on the countryside.

android and microsoft are huge there, but india is decades away from china or europe.

Damn, never thought it was 99% mobile. Always guessed around 85-90%'ish though.

The reason why PC/Consoles are not sold a lot here is because of the import taxes the govt levies on every unit (and peripherals for PC, basically most electronic devices and exotic cars) which are sold at retail. They are sometimes close to 100%, taxes alone on top of MRP.

A current generation console costs Rs.50,000, roughly ~$612 USD. An RTX 4090 costs Rs.1,58,000, or roughly $1934 USD. That's more than the median income of a middle class household. Also note that the Rupee is at an all-time high against the dollar in history. People, en masse, drank the koolaid thinking that the right wing politics will bring economic and social stability to the country and it backfired, and this govt is even more corrupt than the left (Congress), which ruled the nation's centre for nearly 70 years.

The govt, left or right, DGAF about your recreational activities or hobbies, because they can stay corrupt when inflation hits and increase taxes on these items which the wealthy can keep affording, while the middle and lower class consumers move over to the F2P titles.

lol 400 million players only $800 million in revenue so they spent a total of $2 per year.

Thanks but no thanks.
The dollar exchange is strong there.
You won't get those users spending that much money on gaming.
Which is why they are good to boost player base. Without them, it's harder for the rest to spend.

Mostly kids without access to Credit cards etc.

It's a growing market. So those kids will in future go on to get them consoles / pcs/ whatever.

credit cards in general are absent.
i remember that only wealthy people had credit cards back in the 90s and 2000s. when i signed up for xbox live back in 2002 for beta, i researched only to find out, only people who frequently travelled abroad had one in germany.

things have changed since then.

on the other hand, the indian gamer does not mind a little ad between some games.

Please don't bring politics in the discussion (GAF rule). Also, rupee has appreciated against most currencies in last couple of years. It's simply that dollar has strengthened too much against all currencies due to QE reduction and global situation.
