I mean they already kinda did with the OLED model being $50 more when they could have easily made it $300 and dropped the original model in price

Nintendo is clearly making bank on the Switch so inflation is unlikely to have made it so they're losing money on hardware
Yeah, they did, but they hid it better.

I'm actually surprised they didn't add $50-$80 of value (game, memory, controller, etc) and raise the price more. Now, they only raised the price by 5 to 10 percent, but they added absolutely nothing.

I guess that puts paid to the “they can only do this because they’re being bankrolled by their $2trilllion parent company” talk.

The console model is well known at this point. Sell hardware at low margins to acquire users for your ecosystem. Make money back via software or service sales. Not rocket science that that’s what Nintendo and MS are following.

Of course they’re not gonna do that. You don’t raise prices when sales are falling. It’s a completely different situation than what PlayStation has going on. Switch is nearing it’s 6th year on the market, it’s way, way cheaper to make consoles this far into the lifespan, after it’s been out this long and production yields are better, efficiencies are identified and implemented, etc. PS5 is very expensive to manufacture, and they know that since they still can’t even meet demand, there’s no reason to sell the system at flat or break even, given how much longer it’ll likely take for the supply to finally match demand.

So if anything, Switch is due for a price cut. This is the longest ever that a game platform has gone without a price cut from it’s launch price. It’s been a good run, but the system is aging, and sales are starting to decline, supply chain issues aside.

It’s $399 for the 64gb version.
Not sure why you think the 256gb version is turning a significant profit. Valve’s using the console model for the Deck. Non-valve hardware gets sold for hundreds of dollars more.
£349 for a 64GB SSD is even worse in terms of material cost.

$399 for the 64 GB version, $529 for the 256 GB version, and $649 for the 512 GB version.

Steamdeck has a healthy margin even if you think other (Laptop?) manufacturers take a higher margin because they aren't selling games in an ASUS digital storefront. Point is that the BOM on a steamdeck is much lower than the RRP.

I know we are now celebrating the fact that a console in its 6th year is still the same price it launched at.

Who knows, at the rate we are going, in another 4 yrs we might have a 6yr old system that's significantly more expense than it was at launch. Makes the holding of the price look better in that context. :messenger_winking_tongue:

No way Valve is making any meaningful profit from SD hardware. Why would literally every other PC handheld sell for 2-3x the price of SD? I think Valve is literally scrapping by, selling for a minimal profit, cause they can earn money via other related means.

Love the Switch Oled, fantastic console. Their pricing strategy is spot on. £199 SKU, £259 SKU, £309 SKU. Clearly shouldn’t be having a price cut as the market is proving with its dominating sales figures.

The only company who’s games a worth anything in terms of resale value (sometimes going up over time).

Let’s not let Sony’s shitty practice result in loads of Switch bashing as a form of copium.

As if they'd dare with their old tech.
That's not how tech work, the tech being old is one of the reasons of why they could rise the price if manufacturers are not producing it like before because they moved on to something else. And that's why I think they were buying a massive amount of parts and not because some "switch 2" that's not going to be here until 2024.

Good for them, but let's not pretend as if they don't like to play "games" with their pricing. There was This. It's also worth pointing out that even though the Switch was "officially" announced as €299, it was actually being sold for €330 for years in most of Europe until the price was dropped a few years ago.

What did people expect Microsoft and Nintendo to do? This is a free shot at Sony so yeah they are going to come out saying they won't raise prices. Doesn't mean either Microsoft or Nintendo are innocent. Nintendo should've really made the OLED replace the standard 2019 Switch at the same price but they kept that around and sold the OLED at a higher price. Still no price drop for a console from 2017.

If inflation, like Sony says, is really affecting them then Microsoft and Nintendo will be forced to increase prices. They won't do it right now because it scores them points. It's like Apple ditching the headphone jack and making a notched screen. Samsung and Google (Apple's competitors) came out and made fun of them but guess what happened when it was time for Samsung and Google to release their new phones? They released models without a headphone jack. Once Apple made a notched phone everyone was copying them.

Companies will get a dig in at their competitors at any opportunity but that doesn't mean they won't do the exact same thing.

We'll see how 2023 goes.
