NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR and DirectX Ray Tracing Improvements in Forza Horizon 5

Boost your Forza Horizon 5 framerates on PC whilst maximising image quality by enabling NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution or AMD FSR 2. These resolution upscaling features are coming in the Donut Media series update available to download from the Microsoft Store and Steam on Tuesday, November 8.

In addition, we’re enhancing our DirectX Raytracing implementation on PC with two new presets: Ultra and Extreme, which render true-to-life reflections for the player car in Free Roam and Races, as well as realistic Drivatar reflections in Photo Mode. Ray tracing is also available in Forzavista as before.

We continually evaluate our tools and processes, and have introduced new security improvements to the PC version of Forza Horizon 5 to promote a healthy and secure gameplay experience for our community.

Q: What are the new graphical options for Forza Horizon 5 on PC?

In this update, we have refreshed the Video options to allow further customization and improvements to the anti-aliasing of the game.

Building on the positive reception for TAA, we’ve introduced two new technologies for temporal upscaling:

AMD FidelityFX™ Super Resolution 2 | AMD

  • We have incorporated AMD’s latest upscaling technology: FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.
  • In Performance mode it can construct a 4K rendered image from a 1080p frame buffer, allowing higher performance at higher resolutions.
  • This technology can be used on all PC graphics cards including AMD, NVIDIA and Intel.
Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) Super Resolution | NVIDIA

  • We have incorporated NVIDIA’s DLSS Super Sampling technology, providing AI-powered resolution upscaling.
  • In Performance mode it will generate a 4K rendered image from a 1080p frame buffer, improving framerates at higher resolutions.
  • DLAA uses AI-powered technology to anti-alias a native resolution image at high quality.
  • DLSS Super Resolution is available on all NVIDIA RTX graphics cards.
Q: What improvements are available for ray tracing in Forza Horizon 5 on PC?

We have added two new settings for ray tracing quality. Ultra and Extreme settings allow player car reflections to be rendered in Free Roam and Races.

This also allows ray tracing to be enabled in Photo Mode for both the player vehicle and AI cars.

Q: What are the differences between each of the ray tracing options in Forza Horizon 5?

The Medium and High settings function as before, with ray tracing exclusively rendering in Forzavista.

Meanwhile, the Ultra and Extreme options expand ray tracing to Photo Mode, Free Roam and Races.

Some ray tracing settings and scenarios will render reflections at half resolution, while others render at full resolution. Please refer to the table below for the breakdown on a per-setting, per-scenario basis:

Q: What PC hardware is required for an optimal ray tracing experience at Extreme settings in Forza Horizon 5?

Based on our testing, we recommend a setup that falls into our “Ideal” PC spec bucket, as shown below:

FH_5_PC_Specs_025f2c7202.jpg

Q: Where can I enable these new resolution upscaling features and enhanced ray tracing?

The new resolution scaling features have been added to the Video options submenu under the following categories:

Resolution Scaling

  • AMD FidelityFX CAS
  • AMD FSR 2
  • NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution
Anti-Aliasing

  • TAA
  • NVIDIA DLAA
  • FXAA
  • MSAA
Note: Like with TAA, a sharpness slider for DLSS Super Resolution, FSR 2 and CAS will appear below them if selected as the resolution upscaling technique.

The enhanced Ultra and Extreme ray tracing options can be found as the last tweakable setting in the Graphics submenu.

Q: I cannot enable NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution on Forza Horizon 5 PC. Why is this?

NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution is only available on PCs with NVIDIA RTX graphics cards.

If you are using an NVIDIA RTX graphics card and cannot enable NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution, please ensure you have updated to the latest version of Forza Horizon 5. You can check for any available updates on the Microsoft Store or Steam.

We also recommend updating your graphics card driver to the latest version. NVIDIA GPU owners can download drivers using NVIDIA GeForce Experience or through the NVIDIA website.

Q: I have an NVIDIA RTX 4000 series graphics card. Can I enable DLSS 3.0?

While we have nothing to share today regarding DLSS 3.0, the team looks forward to your feedback on the DLSS 2.4 implementation in Forza Horizon 5, which can be enabled on all NVIDIA RTX graphics cards to increase your performance at higher resolutions.

Interesting. I'll try this later with DLSS. I'm just short of getting a solid 4k144 experience so DLSS should take it over the top

DLSS and FSR 2.0, now this a really nice upgrade.
November 8th, can't come fast enough.

Exciting, but also kind of disappointing that it's only on your own car because I don't use external cameras. Looking forward to playing with it as well as trying DLAA.

DLSS in Flight Sim is a big deal (same engine) for VR, here I hope for some VR update. But even without it, I will try to run it, by that time hopefully on 4090 (still waiting for arrival)

finally in-game raytracing... the implementation is so lightweight that it was kinda weird it's only now coming.

the modded version with RT during gameplay had maybe a 10% performance penalty, which is basically nothing

If it takes me out of a constant 4k144 then I'll turn it off. It looks pretty good already with everything cranked up.

Since when does flight sim use Forzatech?

Since forever

Then, the company's CEO shared the main technical challenges to successfully overcome and complete the Microsoft Flight Simulator, having to master the FTech Engine, graphics engine of the Forza franchise, used in Flight Simulator, and Azure, provided by the Microsoft Cloud.

Need some more improvements for the 60fps console versions. who needs 4K native at times when the pop in is that noticeable?

I mean you shouldn't crank everything up in the first place, there are settings that you won't even notice they are maxed compared to medium or high.

but depending on your card this shouldn't really be an issue. the RT implementation in this game is pretty lightweight (unless they drastically expand it over the mod)

First and most importantly shut your horse mouth

Also, I can run it flawlessly and there's no real frame drops or frame time issues to notice but I may consider dropping to ultra to see. I just crank it all up (first world problem style) and as Ron Poepeil (misspelled?) said, "set it and forget it".

you'll most likely have better overall visuals with RT on and 1 or 2 unimportant settings reduced a bit.

the max settings for car LODs for example is basically a joke, like in the literal sense.
they first played with that setting when making the One X version of older Forza games to judge the performance of the console.
as the max Car LOD setting basically renders even the most distant cars at the highest level, which is quite literally imperceptible unless you play at like 8k or something, but even then it's questionable.

I think it's like even if a car is only 2 pixels in size on a 4K output it still is loading the absolute max detail car or something 🤣

Made just a couple of tweaks and it worked great. Was even able to stream and maintain the same fps as before I made the changes and usually I lose 10%~ due to streaming (no capture card). I had my first crash in the game though. Just the game, not a hard PC crash.

I just purchased the Hotwheels expansion a couple days ago since I got my 4090. Playing this with max settings at a consistent 120fps is amazing, looking forward to the better ray tracing implementation.

*Me entering this thread having previously played it at native 4K, max(ish) settings and locking to 30fps on my GTX 1080*

Rt reflections for the player car is pretty dumb as a lot of people don’t play in third person. I’d rather they used it for shadows or lighting.
