Nvidia is reducing the hash rate of newly manufactured GeForce RTX 3080, 3070 and 3060 Ti graphics cards

Because NVIDIA GPUs are programmable, users regularly discover new applications for them, from weather simulation and gene sequencing to deep learning and robotics. Mining cryptocurrency is one of them.

Halving Hash Rate

To help get GeForce GPUs in the hands of gamers, we announced in February that all GeForce RTX 3060 graphics cards shipped with a reduced Ethereum hash rate.

Today, we’re taking additional measures by applying a reduced ETH hash rate to newly manufactured GeForce RTX 3080, RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 Ti graphics cards. These cards will start shipping in late May.

Clear Communication to Gamers

Because these GPUs originally launched with a full hash rate, we want to ensure that customers know exactly what they’re getting when they buy GeForce products. To help with this, our GeForce partners are labeling the GeForce RTX 3080, RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 Ti cards with a “Lite Hash Rate,” or “LHR,” identifier. The identifier will be in retail product listings and on the box.

This reduced hash rate only applies to newly manufactured cards with the LHR identifier and not to cards already purchased.

What will "reduced hash rate" do to graphics performance? Why don't they get rid of the hash rate instead of just halving it? Create a separate card that can do the hash rate and charge 4x the amount. This all sounds weird.

4000 will be paper launching next year before people can even buy 3000.

Is Covid the main issue with cards atm? Xbox and ps5 seem to be doing a lot better in getting their consoles out.
Demand on GPUs is higher as many people go to PC gaming, and the crypto bubble.

So how does the hash rate effect performance?

Interesting AMD said they wouldn't gimp their cards.

I want a 3060ti or 3070 at near msrp. I need to make more an effort to get one. I've been doing the Newegg Shuffle, but no luck yet.

Surely they're going to lower the price back to original MSRP since they're doing this.

Also I fully suspect this will stop miners in their tracks, and scalpers won't totally swoop in to buy the resulting excess stock.

Good job Nvidia.

watch the old version of the 3080 becomes more expensive than unreleased 3080ti.

Hell maybe someone will trade with me and get my 3080 for his version. he wins in mining I win in gaming lol.

They launched at full rate to cash in on the miners it seems. Goes to show gamers were never intended to be “first” for them on that front.

That is not true. what happened is the mining boomed around Nov / Dec to its highest rate ever so these cards became a mining target. it wasn't super bad at first. and you could have bought a 2080ti used for cheap even.

but the situation became worse just shortly after release and the market went so big it couldn't stop.

Thankfully this week the bitcoin lost around 30% of its value since Dec / Jan. if this continues, many people will give up and start selling their cards fear of losing money.

Still. the old cards will be more expensive than the newer models / Ti version because of their full mining rate.

I’m not sure peoples understand the scale of production differences between consoles and GPUs?

Say you’re Sony. Before even the first unit is produced, you can safely assume >60M units. So basically you plan and reserve manufacturing capabilities accordingly, to pump almost a million+ consoles a month for years. That’s a big scope and foundries give priority to these. Same with Apple, Microsoft, etc.

GPUs? When you’re AMD or Nvidia, and you look at Steam hardware surveys, there’s like what, less than 2% for 1080s, less than 1% for 2080.

That’s what, 1 to 2 millions expected high end graphic cards expecting to land to PC gamers? Round it up to 4 million if you find it too conservative. Pathetic numbers for high end gear. Their bread and butter are in X060, but even that pales on comparison to console output.

When you add a pandemic with a bunch of peoples building PCs for work at home, a nice incentive to upgrade for Pascal owners, and then sprinkle a mining boom, and you have a big supply problem if you planned based on previous generations quantities.

Just all that to say that, it’s probably not even comparable scales of product output between consoles and PC high end hardware.

I mean, I definitely want a 3xxx series card. But I also like to hash when I'm not using it to make a little extra money. Not sure how to feel about this.

Seems easier to just add a dumb captcha.

If nvidia are able to achieve this then people should sell their 3000 series graphics cards for more money than the cost of the newer versiond as miners will want them.

This is good, especially if it makes the 5080 obtainable in 3 or so years or maybe a 6080 2 years later. It was such a mind fuck getting a 3090 last year. I thought I was stupid to cave and get that for MSRP but that turned out to be a decent move. Each GPU I have bought has been harder to get than the last one and mining is a major factor. A gaming only GPU should help. I just want to be able to get a GPU near launch without spending weeks responding to alerts and getting pissed off when items in my cart are gone before I can complete the process or worse, the system locks up and you keep trying for 20 minutes.

I haven't looked into the power/dollar ratio on the 3000 series cards, but I do remember mining a bit of Ethereum back when I got a 1070 on release. Then I realized I was paying more for electric than I was actually making in mining, and on top of that, I was seriously degrading the lifespan of my card.

They doing this only to sell their shitty mining Hx cards for mining only but nobody will buy them because of the price for trash card...

Nvidia not doing this for gamers, they doing this for money...

I was gonna say Nvidia should release a dedicated mining card but then I thought fuck that. Fuck miners. They are stopping the cards going to the people they were designed for and they are also fucking up the environment. I don’t mind crypto but bitcoin needs to fucking dying and there needs to be more green coins.

Are they not even shipping them?

I know lots of people who have gotten cards tho.. as many people as I know who have gotten consoles.

I mean.. this forum is full of people with 30 series cards.

1070 can probably profit about $90/month, currently. 3070 doing over $200/month, while 3080 is doing $300/month.

It probably still won't work out for gamers. Miners are like vultures. They will still devour these cards even with 50% hash rate.

I will believe it when I see a 3070 at MSRP or even close to it.

I went from can't wait for 3070 to "I don't even want one anymore"

is that the current rumor? We don't see yearly gpu release for a long time now

I hope it makes a dent; not getting my hopes up. I'm already tired of bitcoiners and every other kind of bandwagon alt currency. I think they just serve to fuck over the naive anyway, much like casinos and day-trading.

Is that a software lock? Didn't they already try something similar with 3060s and reverted back anyway?

Awww sweet. They reduced the hash rate, now I can get a new 3080:

I'm really annoyed that they do these things as lotteries. Why in this day and age can I not just place an order at a retailers/partner AIB company and just have them ship me one when it's available? Seems insane that they'll just put up random lots at literally random times. It's not really conducive for the average buyer and leaves a notorious advantage for bots in general. Seems I remember hearing that MSFT is starting a program that is sort of doing that, which seems like a step in the right direction in general, more retailers need to do that.

I'm hashing right now with my 1060. Not making a whole lot, around 2-3 dollars every 24 hours. But only spending 20 cents a day doing it. My PC is already always on as a Plex server.

This will not help get GPUs into the hands of gamers. All it does is gimp a typical gamer's ability to use their graphics card to make money. Way to go Nvidia.

Is it gonna stop people like this shit head here!?

(It's a bragging video, thinly veiled as a "help" video LMAO. The like to dislike ratio is delicious though 😂)

Real talk though, didn't they try this with the 3060 and hackers/miners worked around the limitation almost immediately?
