hi there, we are staying in an overpriced 3 star hotel in manhatten near times square and i was wondering if there are any non touristy bars / restaurants that you could recommend? there is only chipotle, tacobell, applebees etc. here maybe some of you know what to do. also a good karaoke bar would be appreciated!

If they're open take a train and go here, best fish and chips I've ever had, it's been a few years since I lived down there, but damn they were good

This Jekyll and Hyde themed restaurant, over priced but you're paying for the atmosphere and show

Great pizza

Lunch spot for the best corned beef/pastrami you probably will ever have - aside from a place in Montreal

And for breakfast take yourself to a corner bagel shop and get a bacon egg and cheese on an Egg Bagel (BEC on Egg with SPK) with a Large Black or Regular (Cream and Sugar)

Get yourself some NYC pizza. I hear they have the 2nd best pizza in the US after Chicago.

Go to Saint Marks Place, it's a whole street filled with Japanese bars and amazing food in addition to some cool Karaoke places. Go to Emily West Village and try their signature burger, it is the best burger I had in my life. That's from the top of my head as of right now. I'm actually leaving NYC next week after a 6 year stay lol.

Getting a proper bagel sandwich is a must. I prefer Murray's in the West Village. The Becca is great for breakfast, the Woodstock is an excellent lunch. It's near Greenich on Bleeker Street - just like Doctor Strange's house ;)

I’m goin next week. Planning to drink and eat till I pass out then repeat the next day. Will try to fit in a museum but my pizza schedule is tight.

Go to Nintendo NY if possible, even if you don't get anything it's the closest to a video game museum that I've visited in person. Also wouldn't hurt to get on the ferry, the view is great if you get on one with the upper floor that you can see the outside view from and it's free to get on

I lived in New York many years ago when it was a good city but the politics have completely ruined it.

I visited recently in May and I highly suggest that you do not take train rides at late hours. A lot of crazy people that can cause harm, mug you or worse kill you if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Go see stuff like Statue of Liberty, or Empire State Buiilding. Check out the center of Manhattan. If you have money, hit up a Michelin restaurant. Those are best in the world and extremely expensive if you want a thrill.

Do not go to shady places at night or be alone. Always have a group of people.

I haven't been below 59th street for like several years now. ;) Good luck - and IMO, entire NYC is tourist spot.

You are in the neighborhood for some good Ramen shops - so I suggest hit some of them. :)

That's super depressing. I lived there for the summer of 2007 and the city felt incredibly safe and was relatively clean. I would wander the streets all hours of the night alone or with friends, didn't matter. On the weekends it would clear out and you could literally whisper and hear someone a block away it was so quiet. I rode the subway everywhere and I loved the freedom to explore it provided.
