[PCG] BF2042 subreddit mods threaten lockdown if 'toxicity' does not cease

Source: https://www.pcgamer.com/following-d...eld-2042s-toxic-subreddit-may-go-on-lockdown/

Since its launch last November, Battlefield 2042 has had a particularly prickly relationship with the most vocal corner of the Battlefield community. The game immediately launched to tens of thousands of negative reviews on Steam, many of them citing launch bugs and dissatisfaction with 2042's biggest changes for the series, such as classes being replaced by specialists or the lack of a traditional scoreboard.

The announcement goes on to list a few potential futures for the subreddit. If toxicity stays as is, then the mods will start locking comment threads immediately. If toxicity increases, the mods will resort to a total lockdown of the forum.

"Yes, the last two options seem nuclear, and we don’t want to use them, but we said we will do whatever it takes to drive the current toxicity down," the post reads.

They also put the thread in contest mode so you can't see which posts are sorted by the upvote categories. Which is the whole point of reddit

I kinda get it. Maybe the threads are opened in true faith by the reasonable members, but then the comments are bombard with death threats and links to the game developers personal information, and and if mods job is unpaid, they simple won't be moderating a shitton of comments. It's unsustainable.

This very forum know very well how this kind over situation can spiral. So, if they are fan made, i guess they can just have enough of it.

However, it's still the EA fault for releasing a game in such state. Even people not working for them are being affected, oh boy.

They really weren't. That particular sub has been a sort of a support group providing thousand of disappointed fans a place to vent, post jokes, memes and discuss the game with other like-minded folk. In general it's like a big group therapy that's helped many go through the process of getting over the disaster that is 2042.
The place is actually quite chill and I have never seen anyone post any kind of threat. There were the occasional "fuck this or that person", but nothing more than that. Though it's always possible to have some loonies out and about, but those are dealt with and promptly banned.

This game is so crap I’ve gone back to destiny 2
That’s a pretty impressive feat

I’d rather give up console gaming if I ended back playing call of duty

They're just running a scorched earth policy on this game at this point I'm sure. I mean the community on reddit is really the only place keeping this game semi alive. Shut that down and its all over.

Maybe it's for the best. RIP Battlefield. 2042 - 2022 "F"

Dead series.

I actually try to think of how they'll make this game good since I saw McNamaras tweet.

If the talent is gone and the pressure at EA is a hero shooter, this thing can't ever fix itself.

Battlefield global community manager Adam Freeman has said that DICE is no longer engaging with Battlefield 2042‘s subreddit because of toxicity plaguing the environment. As spotted by MP1st, Freeman wrote in a series of tweets that DICE won’t stop perusing Reddit for feedback and constructive criticism, but its developers no longer feel comfortable engaging with the website’s users. Freeman has said that he’s open to communicating on Twitter instead, presumably because the platform comes with handy-dandy features to weed out abusive users.

Saw this bullshit yesterday.

Thee fucking audacity. How do you expect people to react with a trash ass game that they've spent 100s of dollars on. They need to be open to ass whoopings for selling that bullshit. I fuckin' can't with these people, lol

A company like McDonalds gets dragged through the mud all the time. Anything from people making fun of their shitty greasy food, to pink slime frozen patties, to targeting kids, to always linking McDonalds to fat people, to even rigged Monopoly games, to "McJobs" being the posterboy for shittiest job in the world etc....

Never seen McDonalds back down and run for the hills. Whether it's true or not doesn't matter. They got balls to answer.

Seriously this. It's literally his job to interact with the community, but since he's got his feelings hurt he won't talk to people no more.

Imagine if :insert literally any job: decide they aren't going to do their job cause of rude customers. Lol!
Is that guy a real person?

All I know is that EA/DICE have mishandled BF2042 so outrageously that any future BF game they make better be the best BF they ever release or it's no Bueno. This new DICE I don't think is even capable of making a Battlefield game anymore. They have become an average studio at best. Actually, they are a bit below average. You go out and make an ONLINE-only game that lacks the ONLINE game's basic features and design principles of a 5-year-old.

Imagine being intimidated by Redditors lmfao.
Any company or team of PR people taking seriously social media comments that are obviously trolling or juvenile..... "Your product is trash, make something better suxor!" should be a non-issue because nobody in their right mind would try to analyze or take heart a bunch of drive by remarks. No different than junky comments you see for a YT video someone posted.

If anyone is taking the above as "It's so toxic we are shutting things down" is just a bogus reason to shut down.

EA and DICE just don't want to butt heads with any gamer or BF fan who nitpicked the game apart into oblivion. Those early posts and videos where someone who knows their stuff about BF would list like 50 or 100 missing things or shitty quality features vs old BF games is the kind of stuff every employee at EA is trying to avoid responding to.

They know it's a shitty game they launched, so hey you got man up and face the music.

What EA wants is to try fixing it in various patches, but avoid getting called out because they've been called out so much the past few months they all feel like miserable asses at work. That's a judgement call. Should cosunmers lay off the gas and let them fix? Or keep the pressure on criticizing a product until it is fixed?

When there's enough ammo to gun down a game where even Bloomberg/Yahoo Finance has an article about how bad BF flopped, you got issues.

Trying to scam millions of consumers with a broken product, that's just business as usual for Dice and EA.
Consumers complaining the product they paid for is broken, now that is toxicity.

We have to admire the "bravery" of these companies, trying to invert the onus of the blame.

I didn't realize that Andy from GI went over to DICE.

Why would game publishers even bother with Reddit? That place is truly an abomination.

An EA exec recently made a comment that 2042 failed because of Halo Infinite's surprise multiplayer launch, so the 2042 Reddit has been making fun of that for the past few days. I guess that was too much for poor little DICE to handle.

Even Penny Arcade (yes, they still exist apparently!) got in on the fun:

Do most devs interact with communities on Reddit? If I was the community manager I would have just stopped without announcing shit.

There is no point in engaging when most people can't articulate the criticisms. The BF community has been toxic for a long time. 2042 had an awful launch and runs like shit and deserves the criticism but the same has happened with every major release since BF4 at least (I´ve been part of almost all betas since 3 but rarely buy on launch). Some people just want to throw shit.

No wonder BF fans are tired of DICE's shit. 2042 was the straw that broke the camel's back.

IMO this is the only time that they actually deserved blowback.

Racial and gender issues were stupid from both gamers complaining about black characters/women or historic accuracy in BF (lol) and the devs by being childish about the whole "everybody's battlefield". Performance has usually been not great but not unplayable... Until now.

Both BFV and BF4 were broken and buggy at launch. BF4 deserved every bit of criticism it got when it was released because the game was straight-up unplayable.

DICE's MO for years has been release broken game now, and then patch it later.

I played BF4 day one so it wasn't unplayable but yes, it had a lot of bugs. And yes, as a BF fan I pretty much know what I'm getting into when purchasing BF games early... That said, 2042 was shittier than expected.

I played BF4 on day one and it was unplayable for me. The constant rubberbanding and lag made the game an absolutely horrible experience. The only difference between BF4 and 2042 is that 4 was actually a good game underneath.

You mean idiots who continue to pre-order digital distribution games...I mean, why??

All you have to do is wait for reviews then click the download button, its not like you have to face the trauma of leaving the basement, go to a shop and find it out of stock!!!

If your idiotic enough to be sucked in by all this cosmetic, pre order bullshit because of some bizarre sense of FOMO, then that's your problem if the game turns out to be no good.

Don't get angry, get some fucking patience and self restraint.

I don't know. Other than performance I have enjoyed the game but I'm a very casual player so I'm easy to please.
BF4 closed beta on PS3. With no textures. Still fun as F.

Yeah, it is a good game.

But I have no sympathy for idiots who pre-order games or buy games at launch. Not only do they deserve what they get, but they have active culpability for shitty half-baked games.

This! I learned my lesson after Star Citizen Kickstarter. Have yet to pre-order any game since. Thanks, Chris! ❤️

Yeah, it is a good game.

Because back then DICE had Patrick Bach, Patrick Soderlund and Karl Magnus Troedsson. The old DICE guard since early 2000

lol doubtful.

The fact that this game is doing millions better then BFV tells me its going to be hard to have this series die if even 2042 is moving such units even with being such a dumpster fire. We can't even pretend that it was just a fucking trailer or something, a beta, early access, early reviews and people still bought the game. So at this point, I'm not really sure how bad a BF title needs to do to even get us in a whole "straw that broke the camel's back" situation as that should have been BFV using such logic.

One of the lowest selling BFs in history, a marketing and PR nightmare, millions still bought it. So I try to remain objective with this and simply look at the numbers, I just don't see enough data to pretend that this is really it, this game should have did less numbers compared to BFV, not more.... so it tells me the gaming community simply doesn't give that much of a fuck long term about stuff like this and generally have short term memory or may not really care that much about some of the things you think they give a shit about as a majority. I don't even know how many fucking times I need to say this or how many times some of you need to see a game you hate do massive numbers to understand this......what we think on Gaf, online, Youtube etc may not be the majority. It takes a echo chamber idea and tries to force, exaggerate or pretend EVERYONE supports that view, what I find is that most gamers don't really seem to care to the degree you and I do regarding such things.

Far Cry 5, too woke, was suppose to flop and omg "straw that broke the camel's back" fans had ENOUGH...annnnnnnnnd best selling Far Cry, fastest selling Far Cry lol
Battlefront 2015, again...was suppose to flop based on neckbeard ideals lol, not like the "better" and or "da REALZ Battlefrontz" annnnnnnd best selling in the series, no one gave a shit.
Call Of Duty, shit any one of those games, omg look at da youtube downvotes, tis OVAz "straw that broke the camel's back" fanz be mad.....no one gave a shit still moved massive units.

This is what I mean when I say, what is stated online, Gaf or generally in the hardcore community is normally not the majority, in fact we make up probably one of the smallest groups in gaming lol Shit, how many times do you see us telling folks how much we like Fortnite? That game is a joke on here, doesn't stop it from having literally millions playing it, I just don't buy the whole Reddit, Gaf, Youtube screamers as any real indication on how a series will do. I try to just stick to the data on stuff like that as we've seen such communities wrong all the time on shit like this.

I played BF4 on day one and it was unplayable for me. The constant rubberbanding and lag made the game an absolutely horrible experience. The only difference between BF4 and 2042 is that 4 was actually a good game underneath.

True, but just like BF4, I have no clue what is going to happen to this game months or years from now. I'd argue BF4 even being a better game after that first year is what even caused a lot of this, I mean...I really love the game, but that comeback is what got EA thinking they can just release what ever, patch later and they good lol

I don't fault them for fixing BF4, simply that it didn't feel like a lesson learned type thing, it turned into a horrible habit. They had bad launches before 4, but I'd say in terms of just server stuff, 4 was easily the worst at launch and basically unplayable. 2042 imho isn't in the same state server wise, but design wise.....dear god they have a lot to re-do, they'd basically be remaking the fucking game at this point lol

Looking at how people are dead ass defending BFV (never thought I'd see that on here btw lol), its hard to say how 2042 will be received in the future, but all of that will be based on how EA deals with this and if they truly give Zampella the freedom to turn this shit around. I don't believe it matters if he is there, I believe it matters if EA LETS HIM freely fix the fucking game.

SantaC SantaC lol you mean the dude that fucking stated this?

nahhhhhh good riddance. I don't see how any of that PR shit helped BFV, its a great game btw, but his comments are largely why that game sold so low regarding that whole nightmare. I ignored a lot of that as I only play MP in BF titles, but I can't ignore that such a negative thing largely hurt that project. Let him do that shit with his own studio about feelz and shit. BF simply doesn't need any of that.

So I'm having a hard time believing a series of cherry picked managers are the real reason behind those great BF titles lol, the fucking games are made by so many teams, well over 1200 plus developers, but shit 3 that don't even develop, but just manage are the REAL reason? smh. If they were at EA, I don't even think those dumbass "don't like it don't buy it" comments would do any good, it would be BFV all over again, even if they wanted to do something great, who is to say EA would even let them? So I try not to look at it like 3 fucking people shifted the quality of those games, that is to assume EA ever gave them some deep freedoms in the first place. This is EA we are talking about lol

Couldn't have said it better.

This discussion made me try to remember my experience with BF4 at launch and I can't remember. What I do remember is hours upon hours of amazing times with my squad through every single installment since the very first one.

It's an action FPS, any managers that get to work on one of EA's top franchises will be competent enough to put shit together with a few dozen millions and release something. Obviously the market as a whole doesn't really care exactly what it is as long as it has the BF title on it.

I play 2042 at least once a week and while I'm very annoyed at the dismal performance that it has on my decent PC, I still keep coming back and having a good time. I still hope they improve on the quality over time (as they have always done).

Pre-ordering is such an outdated concept. Maybe if it was still the 90's, you had no internet and lived in some small town with literally only one store that sold games. But even today AAA games are often missing content or broken on launch so it's actually better to often wait months to play the game and by then it's not only cheaper but in an actual playable state.

True, generally I believe most are like that. They'll remember all the good things about the game vs rough launch, its why people are even defending BFV, the irony of this whole things is, if they were wrong about BFV, I'm not sure how that now supports knowing 2042's future or something.

BF4's launch wasn't the whole story
BFV's launch wasn't the whole story

The same can apply to 2042, we'll have to wait and see how its changed, fixed and how it will be received years from now.

I still hope they improve on the quality over time (as they have always done).

True, I don't doubt that at all as at this point, that has become a specialty of DICE and DICE LA for better or worse regarding this. We know the support for BF titles is legendary at this point, but its that idea that a lot of us feel is allowing EA to put out such rough launches with this idea that they can just fix it later. We can still get solid support post launch and still get a solid title at launch if EA truly gives the time and freedom to those teams.
