Phil Spencer says game companies must ‘turn away from dividing players and creators’

I mean he is sort of right. Kids these days don’t really get into the console fanboy deal they just play games on their tablets, phones, and laptops. The only time I see anyone talking about game consoles beyond the switch outside the internet is old fuckers like myself.

The amount of non console options is much larger than all console platforms combined.

Once again, Phil is right. No wonder he has so many awards.
This is a Freudian slip if I ever saw one.

Bringing more gamers together via GP on Xbox, PC, and Cloud is the opposite of division. If you refuse to touch those platforms out of brand loyalty to another platform, that's more of a self imposed isolation. LOL
They aren't trying to expand gaming to everyone. They are trying to get everyone to expand their ecosystem. Call it whatever you want, at the end of the day they want gamers in their ecosystem. It is disingenuous to state it otherwise.

I don't give a fuck about Xbox or PS.

Saying he isn't actively taking developers away from gamers is pure fanboy trash.

How on earth is Microsoft "taking developers away from gamers"? Gamers can still access all the developers work via Xbox/PC/Cloud and they even have the option of spending less money in the process via GP. The gamers would need to separate themselves from the developers via brand loyalty, that's not something MS can do.

If you are talking about restructuring and layoffs, unless MS is locking these people in a dungeon somewhere they can still work for someone else. LOL

Oh, they're not taking them away from anyone, you just have to join our ecosystem to play them now.

100% the fanboy response I expected.

If they make that ecosystem larger and more easily reached, the result is more people having access to these games for entertainment.
That is stating the obvious. Same would go for Apple, Sony, Nintendo or any other company that currently operates mainly in their own ecosystem. By expanding the ecosystem to include more users more people would have access to those games.

Just the reality of the situation. If you refuse to play games on platform X because you love platform Y, it's neither platform X or Y that deprives you of content. That's all on you.

Again, it's not on me because I give no fucks about it either way. I play games wherever they are.

But I'm not a fanboy, so it's clearly obvious that his current sole intention is removing as many games from the competition as possible to force gamers to join their ecosystem.

Most of the conversation in this thread is completely different than what Phil was talking about lol

*sees Phil Spencer in thread title*

IKR, the statements seem to be more about making gaming communities a safe refuge for all players and the work it takes to avoid the platforms being used to spread societal division (think FB or Twitter).

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Ah, so that's why he's trying to divide a huge publisher and tons of very popular franchises and their creators from half their player base. Makes sense.
That's complete nonsense!
it's not half......., more like 70/80%.

Spencer was speaking at the 12th annual New York Game Awards on Tuesday, where he was accepting the Andrew Yoon Memorial Legend Award.

Stressing the need for video games to bring joy at a time when “there is more despair in the world,” Spencer stated that the onus is on business leaders to ensure players receive this joy instead of experiencing more negativity.

“Today, as creators, as leaders, as world builders, our greatest responsibility is to inspire and invite joy,” Spencer said. “Each one of the hundreds of titles that players have at their fingertips today and tomorrow is a calling card for joy.

Halo, God of War, Vampire Survivors, Peppa Pig – big games, small games, mobile games indie games – each one is designed to deliver an infusion of joy in the midst of our lives, to give us so much joy people want to talk about it, to share it.

“We, all of us here today, all of our teams around the globe, we’re all part of creating this echo effect of joy.

“Our creators who bravely and intentionally release their visions to the world, particularly in the current culture of criticism and cancellation. Our players who bravely and intentionally carve out time for our games to invite, rest and rejuvenate their lives.

“And business leaders – we’re called upon to have the courage to protect and nurture this collective joy. We’re called on to incubate these experiences, create them and grow them.

“To seek and surround ourselves with a multitude of perspectives. To honour our differences across experiences and geographies, and to practice empathy when intentionally listening to others.

“We turn away from dividing players and creators, and instead towards each other, as we advance and amplify joy together. This is the echo effect of gaming joy.”

I believe the term for this is 'third place talking points'.

hope whoever wrote this word salad for him is among the 10k getting axed.

made the guy sound even more incoherent than his usual self, which is something.

He says as he attempts to divide more players and creators than anyone in the history of gaming.
This has been the way since console came out.
Infact, Microsoft by putting their games on PC as well as console has done more than any other console maker in the history of consoles to give players more choice.
