PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan Discusses Metaverse, Possible Further Acquisitions, Live Services Expansion, & More

FUCK Jim Ryan after his stance on women's rights.

We don't provide a platform for PlayStation here on NeoGAF.

What eye-watering, towering hubris you have to think you can speak for the entirety of NeoGaf!

Jim's so-called "stance" was essentially "respect that other people are entitled to a different opinion". He's absolutely right on this one.

People like you who try to shut down debate, gaslight, psychologically manipulate and bully the masses into falling in line only with what you think are the ones who should probably be de-platformed.

If you carry the view that "people are entitled to their own opinion, and that must be respected" is an extreme view, then the irony is that it is you yourself who is the extremist. This singular fact is what makes you more like the free thought-suppressing religious zealot extremists of the world; the same who commit the most heinous atrocities in the name of their own self-righteous activism.

Yea I also assumed that poster was trolling, but I guess not. They made that exact post in a previous thread referencing Jim Ryan.

Why leave Resetera only to come to Gaf with that nonsense? 🤷‍♂️

I browse Era regularly (don't have an account there) and most people are just pretending they hate sony and Jim Ryan to not get banned (except if they're from the green side of the force).
Lately, era is filled with sony hating threads and are handwaiving MS related problems and are barely reporting MS problematic stuff.
There's a thread today reporting MS bad working environment in there where users are saying they're not surprised this wasn't reported... so I think shit will hit the fan sooner or later.
So I really think he was being sarcastic.

Jim Ryan says further inorganic investment will be required to help grow the business

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan has said that the company is still on the hunt for new acquisition targets that can help grow the PlayStation business. During its fiscal year ended in March 2022, SIE acquired five studios including Returnal developer Housemarque, PC port specialist Nixxes Software, UK-based Firesprite, Demon’s Souls remake studio Bluepoint, and Seattle-based Valkyrie. It also invested in Discord, Devolver Digital and live service game platform AccelByte, while talks are also ongoing to fully acquire Bungie and Haven Studios.

“We’ve been extremely active in the area of M&A and investment,” said Sony’s Ryan (transcribed by VGC) during a PlayStation business briefing session on Thursday. “The purpose of these investments is to increase our core strength at PlayStation Studios, but also to acquire expertise in areas of game development where historically we have not had a significant presence. “The planned Bungie partnership is a great example of the latter,” he said, reiterating that Sony wants the Destiny studio to help it gain a greater presence in the live service market.

“In terms of future M&A activity, the answer to that is we are not at all finished with our strategy of trying to grow PlayStation Studios inorganically,” he said during a Q&A session. Ryan added: “As we transition from our historic game development strategy to a much broader and much wider market reach than we enjoy today, it is very likely that inorganic stimulus will be required to help us to realise these dreams. “And to the extent that potential targets fit with our strategy, to the extent that potential targets allow us to accelerate the way in which we are able to deliver on our strategy, we will certainly consider farther M&A activity to add to our business portfolio.”

Is Arc System purchasable? I would think Sony needs some fighting games in their portfolio. Some of their games are already PS console-exclusives anyway.

If I was his shareholder, Id ask him why he chose to spend $3.5 billion on ONE studio instead of the dozens of studios and IPs under Ubisoft which is on sale for $8 billion right now. Huge fuck up imo.

Ubisoft yearly revenue is $1.7 billion. Bungie is at $200-300 million. For double the price, you are getting nearly 9x more revenue. Not sure what Sony was thinking here.

Because that $3.5 billion studio ($2.4 billion actually) (1) generates a net profit of around $300 - $500 million, which is proportionately higher than what Ubisoft costs and earns, (2) can help PlayStation Studios generate billions of $ by sharing their live-service expertise, and (3) secures popular FPS games for the PlayStation ecosystem.

Honestly it blows my mind that people arent all over Ubisoft at that price, especially when you look at the IP's they have.

Having said that, Sony bought Bungie for their expertize with having a successful and long term GAAS game, something we now know Sony is going in hard with.

Profit? I am pretty sure the $300 million number were revenue estimates.

And it's $3.5 billion. They paid $2.4 billion for the sale, and another $1 billion for employee retention bonuses. Total cost is $3.5 billion.

Ubisoft has far more GaaS games btw.

That would be off the table. Sony can't compete with the big boys, if they try to sniff WB. They will get outbid easily.

I could see them buying fromsoft though.
They didnt get outbid for Bungie.

MS is too busy with the Activision sale. It's sony oppurunity to sneak in with a Ubisoft or WB purchase.

We're heading back to the good ol' days where 90% of each console's library is exclusive. I prefer it that way, but I'm one who always owns all the consoles anyway.

People were concerned that Sony wasn't going to inorganically grow their studios anymore. Glad we got that covered now ....😂

Doubt Sony wants to take on like 20,000 new employees.

How are we?. even if every exclusive was an actual exclusive to that console, exclusives still only make up a tiny percentage of overall games.

Bungie showed their hands with Activision. Plus bungie made their own term, which Sony agreed to.

WB is different beast than bungie. You are essentially getting DC characters for gaming. That is much bigger deal than Bungie.

No way Apple and other companies let Sony get away with this deal.

Are there any more notable non-indie studios left? All I can think of is publishers and among them only Capcom would be one I could see as a good investment.

I’m not sure the licenses would transfer though, unless they pay way more than the ”actual” worth in terms of developer talent

Why not? Sony is struggling to organically grow their first party. All those satellite studios will help Sony churn out their first party games much faster. Who was it who was telling me that hiring devs is hard in the other thread?

No one is more productive than Ubisoft in this industry when it comes to shipping mulitple AAA games a year. And part of that is the massive workforce. They are very profitable so those 20k salaries should pay for itself.

WB without the gaming licence is worthless. You are essentially getting scammed.
I’d say Rocksteady is one of the most talented western studios but other than that they’re pretty mediocre. Maybe Hogwarts Legacy will send Avalanche to new heights.

Mobile publisher, a studio for racers (Lucid Games), a few studios to tackle the RPGs (Humanoid Studios, Tabata Hajime studio...), one or two additional support studios...

I think they're also waiting on the Bungie deal to close prior to making any other moves since the FTC is "watching" them.

They could potentially have a year to solidify another deal prior to Act/Blizz closing so we'll see

Both bungie and Activision would finalize in the same year. Unless bungie is finished this year.
