Plume mindshare report: Nintendo most popular console. Steam showing new growth.

https://advanced-television.com/2022/12/08/study-steam-gaining-mindshare-in-gaming-market/
Key findings from the report include:

  • Deployments of new game consoles are slowing: since the onset of the pandemic, there has been a slowdown in the number of game consoles from the leading brands introduced to Plume-powered homes. This may be due to component supply issues, but could also be related to the fact that few new game consoles have been introduced to refresh the market.

  • Nintendo claims the top spot for popularity: when it comes to game console ownership, Nintendo (41.3 per cent) leads Microsoft (38.2 per cent), flipping their respective positions from Plume’s April 2019 study. Sony takes third place (19.7 per cent). It’s interesting to note that a new entrant, Steam, is taking market share, albeit currently at only 0.6 per cent of the installed base.

  • Steaming ahead: despite the slowdown in the deployment of game consoles, usage remains high with the average daily data consumption for all console brands—apart from Nintendo (0.6 GB)—well above the average of 1.2 GB for all devices connected to the Plume Cloud. Noting that as all games must be downloaded or streamed, Steam users top the data usage chart with a staggering 9.2 GB of data consumed on average per day.
“Our latest Plume IQ study reveals some fascinating changes, and possible disruption, in the game console market,” said David Huynh, Chief Product Officer at Plume. “In a reversal of our first study in April 2019, Nintendo now leads Microsoft in game console popularity, however, more notable is Steam’s entry into what has been a very established triopoly, with the new platform starting to take market share and its users topping the data usage charts.”

Plume, who had over 1 billion connected devices in 2021, so who knows how much more now in 2022, has come out with a new report regarding the mindshare of video game companies/brands based on connected devices.

Arguably the most important finding in the report is that Steam is quickly gaining mindshare. It has entered with new popularity unlike from last years report which may be an indication that PC gaming adoption is growing much better than expected.

In terms of percentage Nintendo is at the top with 41.3%, followed by Microsoft at 38.2%, Sony at 19.7%, and newcomer Steam for 2022 at .6%

According to the report last year Microsoft and Nintendo were flipped, I suspect that change from first to second place may have been due to a dry year in terms of major releases at Microsoft but that's just speculation.

Another interesting thing from the report is gaming usage. Aside from Nintendo (600MB) user of the other consoles use on average more than 1.2GB per day.

However, Steam users top the data usage charts per user at 9.2GB which is a chasm sized discrepancy. That's a lot of data! It seems Steam has a lot more engagement going on despite it's current placement. The quote at the bottom of the article makes the implication that Steam could be a potential disrupter in the future breaking the current Triopoly.

Nintendo managed to hit 111.08 Million in 5-6 years.

It would be the most popular console so far.

On other thought, this site is questionable.

It doesnt take in to account for activision purchase, which increased the search term of xbox.

So far these data are meaningless.

It literally says in the article it's by actual purchased units connected, not search terms.

You're comparing an article citing a study (with quote) to a DIFFERENT article comparing google search trends, come on fey.

I don’t know what’s worst. The console wars grenades from Eddie or the sources. The fucking advanced-television?

There are no console wars here, Steam isn't a console, and Advanced-Television is not the source it is reporting the source report(study) from plume.

Your source is using those data, for their argument on that source.

And your current source doesnt make a sense, as steam has 120m userbase, which doesnt need a new device, unlike consoles who have to start fresh from the ground every cycle.

At least websites like this has more credible sources.

How Many People Use Steam in 2022?

  • Each month, there are around 120.4 million active monthly players on Steam.
  • On a daily basis, around 69 million players are on the platform.
  • In September 2021, Steam peaked at 26.09 million concurrent users.
  • This data comes directly from Steam, and shows it over a 48-hour period each day.
  • New Steam users sign up to the tune of 1.5 million users each month.
  • In 2018, Steam had a reported 132 million unique registered users.
  • An undisclosed number of users play via a Steam VPN.

Your source is using those data, for their argument on that source.

Are you really going to double down and STILL won't read the source?

Right from the first link at the top,

Plume has revealed insights into the game console market from a study conducted from homes powered by its cloud-driven solution.

I managed to find the direct source too, with the report released through November 2022, https://www.plume.com/serviceprovid...rs/is-steam-disrupting-the-gaming-status-quo/

Welcome to Plume IQ, our monthly reveal of data-driven intelligence and customer-focused insights from more than 2.1 billion connected devices, and over 44 million locations, managed in the Plume Cloud.

Is Steam disrupting the gaming status quo?

In April 2019, we published our first report on the gaming market; over three years later we felt it was high time that we returned to this popular pastime to provide an updated perspective from the Plume Cloud:

which also contains a new graph for data usage which I will add to the OP,

plume-iq-nov-2022-dark-en-v4.jpg

This has nothing to do with search trends, and the link is only quoting the report, which is credible. It also has nothing to do with Steam resetting users. It's showing new growth.

Can we not have an information thread just for the sake of information as a gaming forum?

Eddie-Griffin Eddie-Griffin this is where your data fails.
It doesnt take in to account of the devices that doesnt use their systems.

In essence, the data is worthless.

Consoles and steam are worldwide systems in different countries and locations. The data favors only systems which is connected to this service.

I don't think you understand what this data actually is because it's not worthless, it's only worthless for warrior posts. But I guess this type of information doesn't matter because looking at info threads from others there's barely any discussion in them, so I guess this thread will die off.

Shame, there could have been a discussion about information, extrapolation and analysis done with this report. Could have had a different type of discussion than the usual here.

The data could have been useful if they didnt use this device.
