Podcast recommendations? (I prefer narrative/storytelling ones like Serial…but for all topics, not just true crime)

So I’ve recently gotten into more narrative/storytelling style podcasts like Serial. What are some good recommendations for other podcasts to look into?

I know true crime is the most popular topic it seems for this style podcasts and don’t mind adding some more true crime as I really enjoyed Serial season 1.

With that said, I also would like some non true crime recommendations. I enjoy books/documentaries about history, science, technology, sports, and business, so any narrative/storytelling podcasts recommendations on these topics would be much appreciated.

Thanks everybody!

You've maybe already listened to it since it's by the same producers as Serial but if not give S-Town a try. Best to not read up on it too much. Just go along for the ride.

Here's the favorites from my list:

The Book Review (The New York Times): Authors and critics discuss books

The Daily (The New York Times): A slightly deeper look into the prevailing headlines of the day. Often brings on experts in the respective topics they're discussing

Doug Loves Movies: A comedian who loves movies brings on guests to discuss movies and play humorous movie trivia games

The Filmcast: Three guys discuss movies. They sometimes bring on a relevant guest

Monday Morning Podcast: It's Bill Burr basically joking and complaining about shit. Bonus if you're a fan of US football / NFL

Nextlander: A videogame podcast with two of the original members of Giant Bomb (along with others)

My Dad Wrote a Porno: This British comedian's father wrote an unintentionally hilarious adult novel, and he and a few friends read a chapter each episode while joking about it

Stuff You Missed in History Class and Stuff You Should Know: Informative shows, self explanitory

This American Life: Kind of like Serial, which I saw you liked, but focuses on a smaller narrative and collection of participants each episode

Up First (NPR): The three biggest stories of the day briefly discussed. Great for the morning coffee

Mysterious Universe is my #1 choice

Strongly recommend it if you’re into paranormal/supernatural/conspiracy stuff. Just search for episodes that cover a topic that sounds fun. The hosts are great.

It’s pretty fucking ridiculous but extremely entertaining.

Yes MU is amazing, they have some crazy stuff but are not all serious about it
Another vote for MU. I bought their back catalog years ago. Such fun listening.
Not gonna lie, super surprised and happy to hear there are other fans here.

I also picked up a lot for back catalog and am a MU+ subscriber. Never would have imagined I would financially support a podcast but with them I have zero problems monetarily supporting them. They put out so much amazing content and I don’t want them to ever stop.

Some of the topics aren’t as interesting to me but the hosts make up for it and the episodes that are great are just fucking fantastic, and those are the vast majority of them.

I am Become Bilbo Baggins
My favourite? As a historian and passionate lover of history, it has The Rest is History, which is presented by historians Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook.

The podcast discusses historical events and people, but without a modern political lenses and social standards attached. It is, by a long shot, the best history podcast around. The GOAT of history podcasts.

I'll quote a recent review of the Podcast from The Times, said the Podcast will make you “will make you cleverer and happier". Absolutely true.

Hardcore History is amazing
This. The current series up about Japan and the Pacific front is amazing but if you feel like kicking the creators a few $ older episodes are available in a pack for $70. Wrath of the Khans and Death Throes of the Republic are fabulous.

For Hardcore History, they offer a number of older episodes for free with Audible. One doesn't even need to subscribe, just download the app and select the episodes you want. Each episode is several hours long.
