Press X for Trophies Is a Sad Indictment of PS5, PS4 Today

So what? Let devs take advantage of idiots who think that the number of "fake" platinum trophies they have means anything to anyone else. Devs make money, Sony makes money, idiots lose money. Win-win-win. The store is still going to be full of shovelware junk regardless of these things.

doesn't Sony want to implement a system that gives you some kind of rewards points for trophies?

My only problem is that they pollute the search result in the store 🤷‍♂️.

Now this I agree with. The problem is that the storefronts are filled to the brim with this garbage. I think it looks awful and makes it difficult to casually browse.

The achievements aren’t the problem. The entire lack of any sort of content oversight / quality control is. Some of these people are publishing 50 games a year. That’s a problem.

It's because on the PS5 the store is by default sorted by the newest additions. Since these people spam these games on the store daily, that's all you see.

The only mention of trophies in their blog about Stars was about earning specific trophies or platinums, so it's going to affect a handful of people if they even LET these games have anything to do with it. Frankly they've got bigger things to worry about with a system like that than these things and I'll be surprise if it takes off at all and doesn't go the way of accolades.

As if we need more proof that Achievements and Trophies are bad for gaming. I don't know Sony doesn't just ban companies like Ratalaika Games and
EastAsiaSoft from their store for their trash 1 hour games that is only useful for easy Plats

Yeah, I also think Final Fantasy XV was proof that open world design is bad for gaming and should never be done again, Sony should just ban companies that make those types games.

I still love trophies, but this crap made leaderboards meaningless. It's just a game by game basis. There is still satisfaction when I get the platinum for a game I love like Elden Ring or Returnal.

Someone telling me they have 200 platinums tells me nothing though. If that's 200 games you genuinely enjoyed and would have played anyway, that's cool. If you have Jumping Taco or whatever on your list in an attempt to impress others, you need to rethink your life.

Unlike all the Sony press X to Platinum Run or Jump "games" the games in the article you linked are actual games just short with easy achievements. Great list to use when you need a quick achievement for Xbox rewards though.

This on the other hand is NOT an actual game - hold X for 5 minutes to get a platinum. You're just paying $1.49 for a platinum.

More or less than when people played children's games for 1000 Gamerscore 17 years ago? This shit's always been meaningless.

OP I think you're more mad about the way trophies are being used instead of being upset about them existing in the first place. The best use of any accolades system is either ones that challenge you(like no death runs) or when it can hint you towards secrets you might have missed and you manage to uncover them, thus earning that trophy or achievement.

A great example of this is when I checked the Elden Ring trophies and noticed that there were secret bosses and sections I had never heard of and had yet to find. It made me take a second look in some areas I might have seen and forgotten about earlier in the game.

The ones that just say get 10 kills out of 10 are of course too easy and lazy.

Nobody cares about trophies or how many platinums you got anyway.
This is false. People do care about achievements and trophies. And a lot more than you think.

For example, 16.1% of players got the Resident Evil 3 Remake platinum. That's not trivial. It requires finishing the game several times, doing a 2 hour speed run, finding all collectibles, beating the game without opening the storage chest, not using healing items, etc. Point is, it doesn't happen by accident.

And that 16% are only the people who care about trophies to that extent. There are others, who might not care to that degree, but if there are trophies for other things, they may enjoy going a little out of their way to squeeze a bit more out of a game they enjoy.

Obviously, not everyone cares. Some people don't even care if they finish games at all. That's also proved by looking at trophy list, where most games have well under a 50% competition rate.

Play games however you want. I personally find more enjoyment when I have set goals and can work on achieving them. That's part of what makes gaming the best form of media entertainment for myself.

I hate those ugly covers in my play store front page. For each AAA or proper indie cover there are myriads of amateur shit that makes the store feel like a porn site... but without porn, what it makes it worse!!

Because as soon as they say "yeah this isn't a game" the devs will run out and cry censorship. They can't dictate what is a game or isn't and these devs have followed store guidelines but made a really shitty and mundane game. The best they can do is reject them in sales and other promotions which they thankfully do.

Exactly. Not like they can be converted to PSN store credit or something. If that were the case I could understand not wanting games you can get easy platinums in, otherwise who gives a shit.

It's all subjective anyways. Who would even dictate what passes as acceptable and not acceptable? You think they would actually pay somebody to govern this? Really? Yikes.

Avatar: The Last Airbender on 360 is at least a game. An easy kids game, but it's a game. These aren't games. They're flash animations that you hold X to activate until you have a Platinum trophy.

Sure, but getting a plat/1kGS on a kid's game you cannot realistically lose is no more of an achievement than holding X. People have been farming numbers like this for years, it just got more effective with stuff like My Name Is Mayo 6 years ago. Even this X To Win game trend isn't new.

Trophies are a personal achievement, just ignore this or get it if you're a trophy hunter. Otherwise, nobody cares.

I personally collect Trophies so that everybody can see my collection in my PlayStation Home space...

...Because the game is fun, and Resident Evil matters to people because it's good.

Being proud of getting Platinum in RE3 is a worthwhile investment of your life if that matters to you. People can see on your collection that you achieved a really hard Platinum in a game people recognize. Spending a buck-fifty to get a Trophy that makes people go, "What's that?!" is

Exactly. This is a Sony problem.

This is why you shouldn't care how much platinum someone got. Its which platinum or 1000/1000 they have that matters. If you got a uncommon, rare platinum that demands effort or dedication then that's admirable and respectable. There some games out there that got demanding conditions which filter like 95~98% of gamers.

Trophies like these are a stain on anyone's trophy history. They're worthless and pretty much indicate your accomplishments aren't noteworthy. Fluffing up your score up is pointless.

Ratalaika have ported a couple of fun megadrive shooters recently Gynoug & Gleylancer, but the rest of their output I agree with.

But I also think people care too much for achievements or trophies too, these games are easily ignorable if they bother you.

Only Muppets are going to pay for an easy trophy/achievement in games they honestly don't care about.

EastAsiaSoft have also put out one or two fun stgs too.

Didn't take long for you to jump to MS' defence. Is this a game to you?

I agree. I think we're saying the same thing.

I have 204 platinums. There are some difficult ones and some easy ones. But, you won't find My Name is Mayo, Jumping Burrito, Pickle Run or any crap like that on my list. Everything is games I would have played anyway.

Similarly, I have 100% many Switch games, like Mario Odyssey, etc. The process is the point, but achievements just make it that much more meaningful. I may be less likely to collect all the red coins or something in Mario, if there wasn't a bar to fill up in the menu keeping track. It's the same type of thing.

I make no illusion that you or anyone else care how many games I 100% or what games I unlock the platinum. That doesn't make the process any less worthwhile for me.

And that's probably the difference. I can't imagine anyone buying shovelware easy platinums for the self satisfaction, unless they genuinely believe someone else is looking at them and being impressed sort of like cheating to win online multi-player games.

there's not Plat that means something, no matter the game.

If idiots want to pay for trophies then good on them but Sony could definitely do a better job organizing and curating their store.
Something as simple as defaulting to a "new and trending" category like Steam would already be a good improvement
