PS5 Firmware Update Makes UI Improvements

Sony continues to refine and iterate on the PS5’s user interface, which was a little undercooked at launch but is gradually making great strides. One area it continues to champion and tweak are the Activity Cards, a feature designed to improve the speed at which you can access in-game activities. When used correctly, you’re able to jump directly to certain modes and locations, bypassing menus and loading screens.

A new firmware update available today – although some may have already seen it earlier in the month – transforms the way Activity Cards are presented in-game. Rather than a long ribbon of different icons, these are now grouped together. For instance, in the PGA Tour 2K23 example above, there’s a section for Single Player Activities and Multiplayer Activities. Selecting one of these icons, then brings up a neat list of all the things you can do.

Trophies have also been completely overhauled. Now, when you select the Trophy icon, you’re able to see the full list of available gongs in the game. You can then choose to pin certain challenges and even snap the list to your screen. Previously, you’d have to go to the Trophy Tracker and then tab through to a separate part of the system to see all of the trinkets available. This is a massive usability improvement.

All in all, these are nice, appreciated quality of life improvements, then. There’s obviously still a long way for the PS5’s user interface to go, but it’s good that the Japanese giant is consistently rolling out meaningful enhancements of late. We’re really looking forward to the next major firmware update, which is rumoured to bring with it full Discord compatibility. That will hopefully help make the system feel a lot more social than it does right now.

As the article points out, the cards got tweaked. The trophy UI when in game is better, and the activities are cleaner now.

I don't really care about activity cards (that's just not how I play games) EXCEPT for the trophy one. Having a simple card to go directly to the list of available trophies for the game I'm currently playing is ABOUT FUCKING TIME. It has been stupidly complicated to perform that simple action until now.

This.

Did they make it so some notifications don't overlay with UI navigations.
There are times when things pop up OVER stuff I'm trying to select. Very bad design.

So theres still no dedicated trophy icon (either by default or can be added) in the "game control centre" or whatever the fuck the pop menu is called? If the card with trophy on it is always there then I don't mind because that serves the same purpose but always seemed mad how you get to trophies when everything else is pretty easily accessible in a few clicks.

The easiest way to view trophies before was to press the PS button and bring up the dash then d-pad over to the right where it shows trophies. Took only a few seconds, but this UI change should be even better.

Then again, I rarely look at trophies.

Autocorrect is usually predictive text from your most used words. Naughty boy!
My phone originally wrote it differently, luckily I discovered the error and corrected it.

Visit www.numan.com! I fucking clicked on that one day going oh whats this, something about model rockets? Fuck sake now Google won't leave it alone...

...I did order the reduced price sample of not-viagra of course though. I mean everyone should try that once for fun regardless of whether your wilson is working properly.

That takes you to the list of games, and then you have to select the one you're playing. There was no way to go directly to the trophy list for the game you're currently playing, unless I've missed something.

And the option you're talking about is on the Home screen, which requires you to long press the PS button, which I always forget to do, so I instead first have to select the Home option in the quick press overlay. Just very cumbersome.

One actual complaint I do have is that the OS will let you launch a game while another game is running without prompting you. Feels like it is way too easy to accidentally start a new game and lose any progress you had in the game you were playing.

I haven't done it yet but I know it is coming.

It will also unceremoniously kill any game you have running if there's a system update while the console is in rest mode. Which you can maybe disable, but yeah.

EDMIX EDMIX look, someone doesn’t like something on the PlayStation, get in here and defend it.

I like the PS5 UI, although I miss themes.

I wish they still did the hold PS button to power off. My mind has now grown accustomed to the new way though.
lol, I don't own a PS5 yet.

Soon though, I got that COD bundle that should be coming on the 28th

Same here, lol. I STILL do it till this day unless I mentally tell myself to just tap it.

yea this seems like one of those things like folders was for PS3 and PS4 that will be in some future update or something.

I only remember how the old UI is on PS systems when I have to randomly upgrade a HDD or something and see the default UI before the major updates and remember "oh yea, that was how that shit looked like" lol

On that note...BRING BACK THEM THEMES lol

I hope you enjoy it when it arrives, please don’t take what I’m saying seriously. I honestly mean no harm.

sony: please let me opt out of the whole 'new activity' thing. i don't give a rat's ass about it, & don't need to see it. either give me back themes, or just let me go with the highlighted game's chosen image. thank you...

Between the trophy list card, and the VR configuration card when inside PSVR2 games, sony's actually starting to make smart use of their activity cards.

what's wrong with ps5 ui?
I launch the game
the game launches.

Settings stuff is the same as on ps4

every sub-menu is a cluttered mess and worse than on PS4.
options that the PS4 sidebar had grouped up nicely are now scattered across multiple menus or sompletely missing from it, meaning you need to go into the System Settings for changing small stuff that were all available in the PS4's sidebar.

also no real folders

I don't hate the PS5 UI but I'm also not a fan of it. It's just there and works so not worth getting worked up over.

I much prefer the XMB. It just makes more sense to me to have things organized in a vertical fashion (game lists), rather than horizontal. I also don't like how modern UIs love to bombard you with things that you might like. I feel like it clutters the space and is really tacky.

XMB was so damn clean and elegant, just give us the option to use it. It doesn't have to be mandatory, I just want my PS5 to resemble the god-tier PS3 layout.
