Resident Evil 4 aged like milk and plays like trash

In terms of the plot, 4 is mostly separate from the other games. All they do is throw in some references.

5 feels like a better sequel as it concludes Wesker's rivalry with Chris and Jill.

Imagine taking the story in a JILL SANDWICH type of game seriously. The series was a cheesefest from the get go but sure Mr. potato mind, that's the kind of series one should expect to have a deep plot/"emotional connection" to. Because gaming is at its best when it takes control away from the player to shove third rate hollywood writing and cinematics at every moment.

Huh?

What was your "argument" again? That videogames should be played as if they were videogames? hmm.

Imagine thinking everything is at your level of understanding. You must be fun playing games with. If it was a cheesefest, then you're agreeing with me, end of. What's your argument? That gaming can't be a better medium of interactivity? What a croc of shit basically questioning subjectivity of your own projections onto others. You're the kind of dumb that most of these companies like to predate on.

No idea what you're even rambling about. Have a good day.

I replayed it just a few weeks ago and it still plays great. It's an amazing game, super fun to play.

All that typing to make a 200 word essay, but all it takes is to read the thread title to let us know that your opinion on this game is trash.

Honestly gameplay (besides QTEs) is the least problematic part of this game, or 5 (6 can go swallow on its multiple interruptions in a row and die). Unless you come straight from a back to back playthrough of Revelations 1 and 2, which are kind of like expanding on Ashley's parts in 4 and Lost In Nightmares for 5 (though in reverse order).
OTOH, It's sad that CapCom has seemingly chosen to treat the remake as another TEW, ruining a dark atmosphere and gory aesthetics with an uncaring, badass, quipper hero.

The original released in 2005 and it's "aged like milk"?

I wonder what type of milk the OP drinks.

I think OP is being dramatic. Leon's aim is a bit unsteady, but it's not really noticeable unless you're trying to go for headshots at long range. If you're missing up close that's a you problem, not a Leon problem. Not being able to move and shoot isn't a major issue either because you can just let go of your aim, take a step back and then reaim. Also the game does compensate for that a bit by forcing the Ganados to stop running once they get within a certain distance of Leon. Ashley can be annoying with her "LEEAWN HELP!" every time she gets into trouble but for the most part she just follows behind you and stays out of the way. Also there are long stretches of the game where she's not with you due to getting captured. If I'm being honest I'd rather her not be there, but she isn't that bad.

Agree about the castle and island though. They're fun but they don't work well as horror settings. The castle is like something out of a fantasy RPG and the island goes full on action shooter on you.

every time i start playing it, i dont stop playing it
I think I must have replayed this game 20 times or more. When it came out I couldn't stop playing it. I would start a new game as soon as I finished a playthrough. I spent so much time playing the Mercenaries mode as well.

Started a replay of it tonight with the pc HD mods.

Always feels comfortable to come back to, what a game. Ashley shouting "don't cum!" at me 🤤🤌

I stopped at RE4 and didn’t pick up an RE game until 7. RE4 is the worst game in the series that I’ve played (most say 6, but I never played it because it did look like trash). I played it through once and never touched it again. One of the things I disliked most about Village was that it had a little too much RE4 in it. No, thank you. I’ll take some actual horror, please.

I never played it on release, only the HD PS4 version, so perhaps I’m missing the nostalgia factor that makes people excuse its shortcomings.

PS: I like tank controls, so that’s not gonna save you here.

I'm glad that some people do occasionally see that RE4 is overrated. Honestly, as a shooter, there are better games. And as a survival horror game, it's a mixed bag.

I don't think it's that scary at all. It's definitely an adrenaline fueled game that keeps you on your toes. There's actually some atmospheric parts of the game, but I only say 'some' because a major percentage of the game is just about you mowing down waves of these bloody backwoods hicks or druids, and you get too many guns, and the merchant is not a great concept for a horror game.

Isolation is more important. Rationing your supplies is not really a big problem when playing 4, but in 5, it's rather tight.

I agree, control feels bad even on consoles.
When you are used to modern controls RE4 feels slow and tedious .
I can’t wait for the remake to change that.

Wow I could not disagree more with OP. I just started this game again in preparation for the remake and while the very beginning feels very janky, once you get hang of the controls it's like a dream. An absolute dream. I sometimes forget why I played this game 10+ times when I was younger. RE4's gameplay is total masterclass. The only thing that it aged badly with is "ballistics" (although I absolutely LOVE how unapologetic the game is! I wish new games were this way as well.)

Also I did not like the direction the rest of the series went after it but eh, you get some you lose some. At least we got remakes after 5 and 6.

To all the people saying that RE4 is perfect as it is and that it doesn't need a Remake at all, are you out of your mind? Or do you play with your ass?

So I was in the mood to do some gaming but didn't know what to play. For some reason I've started craving for some Resident Evil, and 4 came to mind, since I didn't play the game for a loong time and I'd figure it would be cool to do a replay just before the Remake to have it fresh in my mind.

OH MOTHER OF GOD THIS GAME AGED AWFULLY.

Seriously, I get some people are fans of the game and will defend it no matter what. In fact, I'm not in the "RE4 is not RE" crowd. I'm in the "RE4 was a fucking awesome game that revitalized an aging franchise and revolutionized the gaming industry", despite not being so horror and more action wise.

However, I'm not blind levels of fan like this game usually has. And this lets me see how poorly this game has aged.

First, Mouse+Keyboard? NOPE. You might be better at aiming with a mouse, but you woudn't be better at tank controls with it, where it doesn't matter where you point your camera, Leon will just walk straight wherever his character is looking to. So, controller it is, no biggy. Aiming is not that bad with a stick, obviously if you don't count how Leon Kennedy got so traumatized from Raccon City events that he started having Parkinson at a young age. He wouldn't let his aiming straight no matter how close the target it's to him, a highly trained special force dude that's in charge of a black ops to save President's daughter that cannot properly aim. But whatever.
Oh wait, I missed a shot due to Leon's parkinson and a bad dude is approaching to send me to a visit with God, better to back up while I shoot... But oh no wait! I cannot walk and shoot! I either walk or shoot, because, well, 2005, the technology just wasn't there.
Using the knife? Oof, I've felt like I was using the RE3 knife, point up/down and swing, your feet are now planted like a tree.

So yeah, all in all, pretty awful controls for a once great game, but not well enough for a 2022+ game.

Ok, controls aged bad, due to happen to almost every game the more time it passes, we get that. But, people saying it has the perfect pacing? WHHHAATT?

The game starts as a cool terror experience with slasher vibes. Village section, *cheff kiss*, top notch. After that? LOL. In my mind I thought the game was bad in the Island section, but I was wrong. Castle is already a Vampire Survivors levels of bullshit with swarms and swarms of dudes coming after you and Ashley's ass. The argument that the Island was absolutely necessary because at that point you're swimming in bullets and guns IS A PLAIN LIE. You're already motherfucking Rambo in the Castle. Dodging catapult rocks on fire like you're playing Age of Empires 2 and the game already becomes laughable, the campyness goes above and beyond and becomes a comedy musical.
Just in the Castle section the game absolutely shines in how the terror slasher you were playing a few hours ago becomes the worst side quest we all hate from any and every game: the escort mission. This game is literally an escort mission going after Ashley's ass. Everyone in the world would burn escort missions to the ground, but for some forbidden reason this game is the best in the world and it doesn't need a remake right? LOL. Seriously, with the awful controls and how you have to be after Ashley all the time, oh my.
Island... Well, at least this one a lot of people already hate. Rambodent Evil 4.

A side note on how every "puzzle" has been totally stripped apart from the RE tradition and it's just straightforward there for you, absolute no need for thinking. Same with documents, they just put the documents right in front of you, no need for exploration for story, we better hide some pesetas rather than cool lore stuff.

I'm just finalizing by saying that people saying this game has the perfect pacing is 101% wrong about it. Resident Evil 4 overstays its welcome waaaay too much.

Inventory tetris is cool tho.
Seems like your main criticism is the controls, not gunna lie they have always been bad (actually wish capcom updated the controls to be more like re5 then og 4) but with bad controls aside its still as playable as ever and the best version of the game is hands down the wii version if your capable of playing a game with low resolution

Yep pretty sure they would never release a game like this on a Nintendo system due to all the gore.
Im pretty sure out of ms, sony and nintendo, nintendo is the only one that has 0 censorship, re7 is already on the switch via stream lmao

So many people seem to want all games pressed through the UbiSoft Game Mold. Map markers, basic TPS gameplay and irony bro dialog. Anything outside of this mold is deemed "bad"
