Some retro-fair pickups.

Great grabs. Always happy to see people getting Shining Force.

I'm cursed with Thunderforce II. I grabbed a boxed copy from a gamestore an hour away and it ended up having no cart in it. Then later, I found a copy somewhere else and the thing is completely dead. It won't play at all. One of these days I'll get a copy that works.

I've played through it before (on VC), but I already have SFII and III so I needed it to fill the gap in my collection. Next up: Shining Force CD (if I ever run across it at a decent price).

Picked up this one recently. Haven't had time to try it yet.

I've been trying to remember this game for years! We had it when I was a kid, but my dad sold it when he realized nobody ever played it. I remember it being not too bad? I should look into it again.

My original copy of Shining Force came from a pawn shop. I never owned the box until a couple years ago despite it probably being the biggest influence on my entire life.

It's a turn based strategy game, and while I don't mind that genre I'm not a big fan of it. Nice music though!

oh thanks! i never played those types of games on the Genesis.

the only turn based strategy game in the 16 bit era that i'm just starting to just play now is Front Mission on the DS since it never came out in the US for SNES.

i'll take a look into it.

I think I got the JP MD version? Its called Peacock King or something right?

Kujaku Ô 2, yes. Adapted from the Ogino Makoto's manga. (the first one was on the Master System, called SpellCaster in the west if I remember correctly)
No need to wait for the naked Ashura/Alexandra to check if it's the japanese version, as the outfit of the protagonist is different from the beginning. =)

Speaking of which, I highly recommend the 2 anime OVA from Rintarô in all their 90's glory, but the Genesis/ Megadrive episode is related to the Kujaku Ô 2: Genei-jô (Castle of Illusion), from the earliest OVA trilogy released 6 years before.

Around the same time, there was also two movie versions, directed by the incredible and great Lam Nai Choi, the god of HK B-movies: The Peacock King and Saga of the Phoenix

That channel must be owned by a former Travelers Tales employee, it has prototype footage for many of their older Genesis/ Mega Drive games, as well as beta footage of Sonic R.

New system owner here,

What are some popular for sale, fan made games that come in box and cartridge?

I've heard about Coffee Crisis, is that any good? Anyone familiar with other titles that are floating around still for sale?

Check out Watermelon games. Pier Solar is a great RPG and if Paprium ever comes out it will to the 68000 heart on fire for sure.

Great finds! Must be an earlier employee!

Perfection.

I know Piko Interactive sells some homebrew and formerly unreleased genesis games. I'm not really into that scene tho. Maybe forum user gunstarheroes can offer some suggestions.

Oh neat, so it is the founder of the Travelers Tales? and he is still with the company.

The guy obviously knows his retro-programming. And the sudden appearance of this channel makes me wish for a new Traveler's Tale game on the Megadrive or Saturn. It will never happen.

A lot of his tech demonstrations are really impressive. The fact that he had the 3D first person stage in Toy Story run at 58fps with no collision is really cool. The macros he wrote for that to get the best performance possible is interesting. Also the tech demo video has a lot of procedural generated stuff, and make use of some interesting 16bit physics models. The fractural landscape demo is also really neat.

The 60fps flickering dither on the 15fps footage is probably my favorite part about all of that. Would never have thought about such a solution.I wonder how large the 1-bit FMV in Red Zone is by comparison..

Yeah, shifting lines of pixels to create a dithering effect is a brilliant idea.

I don't imagine the FMV in Red Zone takes up much space. It is also interesting to note that Sonic 3D Blast also has two 1-bit FMV cutscenes as well, that both run at 60FPS.

The opening Sega logo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRZ6XMcl70Q

Same with the Game Over screen (video not 60fps): https://youtu.be/6fjPvC0NZvE?t=6 .

Jon points out that they are 60fps in his Genesis/ Mega Drive tech video here. I always thought the Genesis was doing some sort of weird hardware effects to produce that.

I absolutely love stuff like this, BTW. I think it is awesome that the founder of TT is making videos showing old prototypes and revealing how he did specific tricks in his old Genesis/ MD games.

Another interesting tech demo posted today by Jon Burton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6KRVmX4FuM

This one showcases a demo that was created for a proposed Flintsones game that was pitched to Warner Bros in 1993...

S3lADhx.gif

This 12 second cinematic only takes up 45k of space. This is being done on the Genesis/ Mega Drive.

The second half of the video showcases 256 colour full screen images out of a palette of 4,096 colours.

Yeah, the 256 colour demo is quite impressive. I really want to know how it was done. He even claims that he could've gone over that number. Jon also said that he will be going into more detail on how he did it in an upcoming video.

I was considering making a new thread for this channel, but the majority of it is all Genesis/ Mega Drive related, so I threw it in here instead.

Actually, no need to finish the game either, as you literally have to flip the case to get some of that. It still amuses me to think there was a time - at least in Japan - when you could buy a Mega Drive game with nudity on the box-art... And that was just fine. :D
