Social Media Karens at it again - demanding trigger warnings for House of Dragons!!

Must admit it was slightly awkward watching that with my 8 months pregnant wife. We both really liked the show tho and neither of us were triggered.

Personally, I've always hated GoT and found its fetish for violence to be unnecessary.

However, there is tremendous inconsistency in how social media etc reacts to the violence. If it's some kind of extreme mutilation of a male character, it goes unnoticed; but if you dare to have that happen to a woman giving birth etc then you'll get a million upset thinkpieces overnight.

PTSD is a real thing as are PTSD "triggers."

But we can't really expect TV shows to give us some list of possible triggers as they often can't even be guessed... and I can't help but think many complaining don't actually have PTSD or anything close to it.

Either way it's a "you" problem, and you need to deal with it yourself, as it's unrealistic to avoid triggers to your PTSD.

But I also think some of you could have a bit more empathy towards PTSD sufferers.
The people complaining are only making things worse for those who actually suffer from PTSD. I mean, before some movies or shows would say “This contains adult content that isn’t suitable for some audiences. Viewer discretion is advised.” But now it’s like they want it to say “This has rape in it, better not watch!” Which completely defeats the purpose

I mean....if one of the characters describing to the king, in detail, what they were about to do to save the baby doesn't qualify as a trigger warning, I don't know what to tell people. It was literally a built in trigger warning. If you didn't turn it off after that it's on you.

Generally curious if this is effective or will people still watch and then complain, potentially more so since they know for definite the content is problematic? I see these warnings plastered all over Sky/NowTV.

Also, when you read the article it's basically just one person talking about their reaction. News outlets need to stop treating a few people on Twitter being upset as a news story.
There have been multiple times, particularly since COVID started, where I'll see a headline somewhere about what "Twitter is talking about" only to see, like, ten people talking about whatever the headline says. It's crazy, ten people with some insane opinion isn't a news story and never should be.

Karen’s bitching and nagging trigger my ptsd of childhood abuse… I should start a movement against them and let them hear my nagging voice for a change

If this were the 50s these people would be protesting Elvis
If this were the 60s they would be protesting The Beatles
If this were the 70s they would be protesting horror movies
If this were the 80s they would be protesting heavy metal
If this were the 90s they would be protesting gangsta rap.

You get the picture but some people are control freaks who are incapable of just moving on and deciding something is not for them.

The scene is meant to be traumatic. It's to show that during medieval times, childbirth is quite dangerous and that the woman didn't have control of her body. Aemma never had a choice whether she wanted a C-section. Plus the episode had way more gore with the dick chopping, arm breaking, face to the axe, but the c section is where they draw the line, lol wut.

As a man with a dick, that scene was deeply traumatic to me and I felt my personal agency was violated by them not warning me that a dick was going to be chopped off in this show.

I think you’re right, but the lack of empathy is, I think, a response to crying wolf with this stuff. If everything is racist or sexist then nothing is, if everything is triggering then nothing is, etc…people just get tired of trying to bend over backwards for every little inconvenience people wail about as oppression.

That’s not an excuse for not having empathy toward people who have actual trauma to deal with, it’s more an indictment of the idiots who try to co-opt legit issues because they want attention.

I didn't see a single tv show for over a decade and when I came back it was like everything had to be agonizing and dark and horrible. I don't watch shows very often at all. Maybe twice a year. When one is in a hurry to show people suffering and dying in awful ways I'm done. So no trigger warning for me. I can handle turning it off and somehow manage to not be traumatized.

Frankly pretty much all of present-day media is simply disgusting and repugnant. Unfortunately it has degraded so slowly for the past two decades, with the commercially driven "push the envelope" need to shock more and more, that people just swim in that garbage now and barely notice it. There's scarcely a single show I can tolerate anymore... Better Call Saul was the only recent series I was watching, now there's nothing worth watching again.

I loved better call Saul and the dark parts actually served characters and story. I also felt that they were in there for some shock, but they were usually important scenes and the show is far and away comedy and drama before anything like that. I'm explaining myself, I just don't think its not the same thing.

But funny, one of my bad ones is from breaking bad. The only episode of ever seen. My wife was super into it and wanted me to watch it. Like most people recommending this sort of thing she wants to start from the beginning, but I'm weird so I said no give me one out of the middle somewhere so I can see if I like it. If I find what's going on interesting, I'll start from the beginning. It spoils a few things but I'm not as serious about TV as I am about video games. And it's better than sitting through five or six episodes waiting for a show to get in gear before I can decide if I like it.

So anyway she picks an episode of breaking bad and flips it on. A kid sees a crime, so they shoot him and chop him up. And his little dirt bike too. Lovely. I'm not shocked. I'm not grossed out. My mind is wandering thinking about how many kids that actually happened to today. I understand the show has a lot going for it, but I'm turned off by that sort of tone.

I think there is a difference between empathy for victims of trauma and demanding trigger warnings for various scenarios someone may be offended by or cause emotional distress.

Let's look at the many situations that could induce PTSD.
  1. Sexual Abuse
  2. Murder
  3. Domestic Violence
  4. Natural Disaster
  5. Witnessing death/ dead bodies
  6. Near-Fatal Car Crash
  7. Military Combat Exposure

Now my question is it reasonable to ask media companies and local film artists to include trigger warnings for each of these instances? This also doesn't include the various trigger warnings in old films with outdated depictions of society that people are also demanding. Wasn't this the point of the rating system to know if you are going into a movie with intense subject material like an R-rated movie so you could avoid it in the first place?

A dude got his dick chopped off, a man got his face caved in with an axe, and multiple people had limbs forcefully amputated. All with full gore. We literally saw the chopped off dick. We watched the guys hand flop off onto the ground.

But yeah the birth scene where there was just a lot of screaming and a lot of blood was the one that went too far.

Okay. 🙄
Seems like a fun lighthearted show.

Daily reminder that trigger warnings don't even work or may in fact cause more trauma:

https://www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/what-if-trigger-warnings-dont-work

It's purely performative nonsense.
Underrated post here.

Announcing something with ”Please don‘t be alarmed by what you see now” will cause more reaction than not announcing it at all.
Hats how the human mind works.

People demanding a waring for suck things no nothing and should in fact not watch game of thrones at all.

Kid: I hear he is skilled at handling the swords of many a squire also.
Karen: What?
Kid: What?

A more interesting point to me is why people argue we should treat violence the same as everything else. I don't instinctively understand who amongst adults needs to be protected from this.
Separately, this shows treatment of incest as normal, kinda makes me think those people who were talking about porn being terrible were right all along. I'm getting old.

I'm seeing more and more calls for entertainment to come with trigger warnings. Many universities in the UK are adding trigger warnings to classic literature to avoid students getting upset or offended.

It's all so fucking tiresome. What's next? Calls to ban certain works of art or entertainment because they don't stand up to modern sensibilities?

Fuck the upset and offended.
