Sonic Frontiers Final Previews

Oh shit its actually looking good, i was worried the demo impressions were a fluke and Sega would find a way to drop the ball. I guess there will be no Sonic Cycle this time unless Sega really screws up the last half of the game.

The bulk of the time spent playing Sonic Frontiers was spent running fast through the various open zones, and while it is a big departure from what Sonic fans may be used to from the series, I have to say that I’m officially fully on board for it. In a weird way, I kind of liken it to a Tony Hawk game. It’s that same feeling of chaining a revert to a manual, linking that to a grind, taking that grind over a gap, acing a special trick or two, and then sticking the landing.

Sonic Frontiers looks like its taken every strategy out of Breath of the Wild‘s playbook — and the playbooks of other games inspired by it — and beautifully implemented them into the Sonic formula without taking away the fundamentals the series is known for. Sonic Team has always been known to experiment with different gameplay styles for every Sonic game, from team-based gameplay (Sonic Heroes) to nocturnal transformation (Unleashed) to deviantART-style avatar creation (Forces). Now, it seems the company may catch lightning in a bottle by following the stylistic open-world trend set by a five-year-old game, made by Sonic’s rival company and making it challenging for fans new and old.

If open-world style games are a new era for Sonic — or dare I say, a new frontier — then I’m already ready to welcome it with open arms when Sonic Frontiers launches on November 8 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Your image doesn't describe this game. This game looked terrible at first and hopes were almost non-existent. Every time they've shown it since it has looked a little better.

Only now, right before release, are people starting to feel as if it could actually be a good game.
nah. It's looked literally exactly the same since it was shown. The director even had to release a public statement specifically stating that they're not changing anything in the game. It looked good right from the beginning.

The vocal minority of shitposters that frequent sites like this started out with trashing the game as much as possible from the get go, and have just been slowly and continually beaten back by the slow trickle of reality creeping into their narrative - the reality that the game looked good from the very beginning and their hysteric exaggeration about the state of the game when first shown was nothing more than total bullshit. I called it out right away. Nothing has changed. It's literally showing all the exact same stuff as the first showing. The game looks identical.

What Sonic formula? What fundamentals the series is know for exactly? The only thing I can agree with is that Sonic Team is well know for trying experiment different gameplay styles for every Sonic game and failing miserably in each one of them.

Dude the fundamentals of sonic are hold right and press C occasionally to jump, unless your new gen then it's hold up and press A twice for a homing attack.

THIS IS THE COR... oh also furry porn... THE CORE SONIC FORMULA!!!

One could say it's the plataforming(Sonic was well know for that). But now it's speed or whatever the fuck this autistic detail means, it could be boost spammer. Can be combat too since they use Sonic as a god-tier martial artist(???), or perhaps it has to do with rings mechanics(another iconic thing).
So yeah...convolunted poop dish.

I'll be playing it. But I still think Sonic Team are creatively bankrupt. And I still think they'll try to impose another convoluted story into the canon, such as it is. Flynn even admitted that it was mostly SEGA/Sonic Team's story, and that he just had control over minor details. They couldn't even have the dude writing the entire storyline for the game.

The sooner they relinquish that kind of ridiculous control, the better off Sonic will be in the future.

Just remake the best sonic game, Sonic Adventure, and give me a chao garden app I can manage on my phone and upload to the game.

Have I entered some parallel dimensions where Sonic Heros, 2006, Unleashed and Forces don't exist?
And even with the games they got right, they still don't always know what they're doing.

I will say, that Sega allowing indie/fan developers to make their own version of Sonic games was the best thing I have ever seen a developer / publisher do.

Sonic Team are smart. Nowadays, people like to do fetch quests, upgrade useless stats, put points in skill trees, dodge to the side after locking enemies, running around doing nothing in empty worlds, picking up shit every 2 seconds and crafting more useless stuff.

So they took all of this and put it in their game. You can be sure this is going to find great success.

I dunno how so many people are shouting Sonic Cycle when the final previews are still positive. When Forces was getting its last previews before it released loads of critics (and people who managed to play at events) were outspoken about how mid it was

Forces wasn't the best Sonic, but at least it looks and plays like Sonic. No useless bullshit.

This one copy/pastes every common concept used in modern open-world games. I guessed the entire game design 6 months ago, and everything went exactly as I thought. I would have preferred to be wrong...

Sonic games were a unique proposal in the video-game landscape. Not many developers make ambitious 3D platformers, and Sonic has the speed aspect to it. Now it looks like it has become some random open-world. We already have a ton of these.

I played a demo during summer. I was shocked that gameplay didn't feel as janky as it looked at all. It controls quite well and it's fun to move. If that's enough for a huge open world game though, I don't know.

Nice. How did you feel about cyberspace, combat or the puzzles? If you played any of them.

my cake, fuck off
Those levels look so generic, especially the open island areas. Sega needs to humble themselves and make another Sonic Mania for us old farts.

I don't think this gonna ever happened again. The way Taxman distanced himself from Sega might have hinted the rumors about the situation he work with when creating Mania. Plus, Headcannon seems to be get short end of stick(and deserved imo) for working with Sonic Team and let them create problems the old games never had before.

Man if this game doesn't get atleast a 75 rating then I will be shocked. Alot of people view under 75 as mid or okay. 75 is considered "good" on Metacritic and "strong" on Opencritic. I just want Sonic Team to deliver this time.

I think this game will be fine. Most previews are positive. They aren't really open worlds, its still linear and you have to figure out how to reach certain spots, and figure out how to beat certain enemies. Its supposed to be rather fun. But, the worlds look a bit drab and i've heard it does get kinda repetitive. Finally, the cyberspace levels are classic 3D sonic gameplay and they're not really long but just about right to replay to meet all the different goals.

Most previewers agree the gameplay is really good.

Sonic releases a day before Ragnarok, but I might get Sonic first. With Ragnarok I know what i'm getting. Sonic Frontiers i'm just more intrigued about, its something different.

It looks like an amateur unrel generic demo.
Only now the gameplay impressions, the most importnt, are speaking well of the gme and rising the hype.

Game “looks” the same, an uninspired noob, ugly unreal demo, but it seems that it is actually going to be good.

Game looks and plays meh tbh, a discount BotW with a bunch of ramps. But there's something interesting lore wise about it.
Sticks & Tangle are mentioned in dialogue. So certain Sonic Boom and IDW Comics characters are canonical. (yeah, let's put a spoiler on that)

Yeah, just what I expected seeing the trailers.

I should play it by myself but, if it's indeed the case, fuck all the media and community hyping up the game like if it was any different this time.
