Sony: "Acquisition of Bungie Represents a Major Step Forward in Becoming More Multiplatform"

Pretty sure they would make much more money with day one one ports, because they could price them higher and profit from the console marketing.

But didnt they sell them high price anyway? What they are doing right now is good enough.
They’ve said it themselves they dont see day 1 for now. Atm it doesnt make sense for them, theyve said It, the fans have said it

I'll be that guy. The upfront cost is an issue for sure but a PC can be very plug and play. You'll want to update drivers and windows every now and again sure but it's a few clicks. Not hard considering all the other benefits.
Don’t be that guy please don’t do it, it’s not as simple as driver and windows updated. I’ve been pc gaming since floppy disc and it has never been more complicated than it is now. Oh hey look got a memory leak because this game is optimized like shit guess I’ll manually adjust my paging file size to some absurdly high number so the ram never fills up. Damn I love this particular game it just won’t work with my PS5 controller or my wireless Xbox Elite 2….. hmm this game crashes when this is happening and runs worse on my 3090 than on my 2080ti. On PC you better be ready to spend as much time figuring how to start your games as you spend playing them.

Pc is great but convenient? Depends on how much you know. I feel bad for anyone who just dives into pc gaming that hasn’t been in it for awhile.

Problem is, people who'll go PC will do so regardless of whatever exclusives sony keeps on their consoles. Might as well dip into the pc market for extra cash.

Hmmm, I dunno. My brother and 2 of my friends game on PC but buy a Playstation for the exclusives. Heck Ill do it too if Playstation goes down that route
( Actually I wont I cant stand gaming on my PC but many people will )

If they do day 1, then they will lose a certain percentage of people.
Some fans who game on both and certain small amount of Playstation people will migrate to Steam.
Which means losing alot of PS Store revenue.

Having it release on PC allows for double dippers and a 2nd rush of sales after a couple or few years after the initial release on Playstation console

Can't agree. Maybe I'm just lucky but I've never had those sorts of issues.

No idea wtf sony is doing. if you want to go third party then go third party. See how well that worked out for Sega.

Absolutely clueless. 3 decades of insane success as a single platform company. record high profits. And then they go and throw away everything to chase more money. Sounds a lot like MS's 1 billion players dream for xbox one.
Exactly, what Sony is trying to do mimic is what MS is doing, concerning the PC market and it hasn't worked out strategically for them. As you see they are still 3rd in market share (last) but has over a trillion (with a T) in market cap.

Unfortunately this is what you get with Jimmy and company. That "all platforms matter" that only applies to Sony but Nintendo and even some of MS's titles have yet to go multiplatform and no one has said a word.

I am mostly a PlayStation gamer but own all the consoles

The only thing keeping me from PC are day and date exclusives

If Sony and MS both released all their games on PC going forward I would have no reason to own a console

Exactly, they aren't really profiting off those type of costumers.

The exclusive strategy used by console makers in the past was to use exclusives in order to attract costumers to use their own platform instead of competitors, great for when consoles were extremely expensive and their main public were kids asking their parents to buy one for christmas. Then their main revenue would come from getting a cut from third-party game sales.

Nowadays, that is not so effective. Exclusive titles are having less effect, and people who'd rather play on PC will either buy a PS for some exclusives only - rather than stay invested in the platform giving sony the money they want - or worse won't even bother getting a console because they aren't THAT interested in said exclusives. In such position, its better for sony to just release their games on PC and be done with it. Maybe not day 1 for potential double dipping or FOMO purchases, but still release them.

Do you buy any third parties on PC? If so, you are precisely on the class of costumers that makes Sony go for this strategy, as i explained in the post above.

Your opinion is the only thing you are entitled to but I wholeheartedly disgee that Sony's strategy currently will benefit the Playstation platform users. PC gamers have the only plus side to what is being done with the cheaper and superior versions. On top of games like Destiny 2 being free to play online unlike on Sony's own platforms.

You can spew that word salad all you want but luckily I know the History of Playstation and what has worked for them.

Lol, word salad? I'm explaining to you in the simplest manner why Sony needs to take these actions in order for you to continue enjoying your AAA games. The bolded is the root of your misguided beliefs.

Speaking as part of a corporate strategy meeting, Sony bigwig Kenichiro Yoshida has hinted that the company’s acquisition of Bungie represents a “major step forward in becoming more multiplatform”. As previously announced, the Destiny developer will retain its independence adjacent to PlayStation Studios, meaning that its games will continue to launch on all viable platforms – including Xbox, PC, and mobile.

Yoshida also touched briefly on PlayStation’s emerging PC business, explaining that the company aims to “provide access to our games to as many users as possible” and it’ll be “rolling out” more PlayStation Studios titles onto storefronts like Steam and the Epic Games Store in the future. Releases like God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn have already proven incredibly successful on PC, and Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection is the next project confirmed to be making the transition.
Welcome to the multiplatform party Sony. Do what you need to do to make more money. That's the point of businesses after all.

Looks like a lot more PC ports coming soon too. I expect more in 2022. We're only in May. Sony isn't buying Nixxes, making a PS PC studio, and constantly harping on PC gaming to only release one PC port every 9 months like the beginning. They'll be ramping it up soon.

What makes you say that?
Its very hard to fight against certain confort zones one is used to. It can make the transition from Console to PC or vice-versa pretty hard.

Not to mention you just don't seem interested in any of the advantages PC can offer if you didn't get one yet.

Not really. Day 1 on PC means no more sub revenue from guys like me. I’ll go all in with PC.

This is like Disney placing their IP on both Disney+ and Netflix in my mind.

The only advantage would be power and cost of software

Both aren’t worth it to me now, but would tip the needle in PC’s favor if I had everything on Xbox and PlayStation there

Then trust me, if you do go full pc because of that, odds are you'll go right back to console after a while.
I bought an x1 on launch day despite their kinect and tv bs because of their exclusives. i thought their launch lineup was better than kzsf and knack and they had titanfall and sunset coming out within a year. easy decision.

I did not buy the xsx this gen despite loving what they did with the console and all the acquisitions proving to me that MS does take gaming seriously. I did not buy it because i already have a PC where I can play these games for pretty much free thanks to the $10 monthly sub (which is basically $1 every few months if you dont sub). But even if there was no gamepass, i would not have bought an XSX. There is simply no reason to. My rtx 2080 was just as powerful as the xsx, if not more in ray tracing games. I had all their exclusives on day one.

if sony does the same, i will leave the PS ecosystem in a heart beat.

Cost of software usually depends on the region. If you live in somewhere like the US or UK you'd need to hunt down for keys in different sites to get better prices, which isn't much different from hunting used physical copies of console games.

Power is also relative. Some games will run better, a few will look better, others will be just barely better.

All things considered, i don't think those are enough to make someone leave their confort zone. Don't know if it'll be the case for you too but its highly likely from what i've seen.

I don’t have a gaming pc at all, so no

If Sony exclusives go day and date, I buy those games and third parties on PC and cancel my ps sub

That’s a huge loss for Sony
Respectfully, in the scenario you described you are still purchasing those Sony exclusive games. We have seen companies like Epic, Ubisoft, EA, and Activision do very well as third party publishers. If anything I'd expect them to do better sales with this move, especially if they eventually launch a version of their PS+ subscription service on PC, as we have seen from others like Game Pass, EA access and Ubisoft+.

Sony exclusives are some of the best in the industry. If they started launching on PC (or Xbox even if they get really crazy) then Sony will only continue to raise their sales across the industry. Only fans care about plastic boxes, these companies are looking to expand to as many markets as they can.

I'm 10000% in support of the death of exclusives. Let the only determinant of what box you buy is whether you like trophies or achievements.
when will we get Nintendo on board lol

I am okay with it too, you can see a massive transition in the industry - before we hated it because it reduced quality but you can even see that Sony is buying studios to handle that part. Don't put extra work on the major studios hand it off to specialists (which is how it should be). Let them focus on the primary platform.

Makes sense for online games, more players is more revenue, why limit yourself. Same with Halo Infinite multiplayer, it's free to play so why not put it on PlayStation, more players and more revenue. You might even get some players to try the campaign, no lose situation.

Goes the other way as well .. if everything is on ps5 or XsX then why would I need a $2k pc?
In what dimension PS5 or XsX or any console can run everything (gaming) a pc can, including peripherals?

I was replying to you saying that once you go full PC, you will always come back. I am saying that wasnt the case for me. I never went back.
The circunstances are different. He never went to pc even with one console maker putting all their games and services there day one, prefering to stay on their console.
He clearly much prefers the console ecosystem.

I guarantee that Sony will be selective with their ports. All this is mainly for their future live service games. The single player stuff will be exclusive at launch.

Exactly.

Live service games need to be multi platform and day 1 on all platforms to increase their chances of success. Reason Bungie is mentioned.

I expect Haven studios and other Sony GAAS games to be multi platform day 1 too.

Single player games is another matter. Expect a generation wait for PC gamers as we currently see.

Final Fantasy XV royal edition PC still has the memory leak problem to this day. Darksiders III does not work with a PS5 controller period. Several games run worse on my big boy than on my wifes rig. Anything else?

Edited to add: Let's get into it. FFXV PC has a bad memory leak, is not compatible with OC software so do not run MSI or anything else in the background it will crash. Several options are not optimized and cause other various issues like the Hair FX causing pink and yellow fur to appear on certain enemies. ALL of these issues require different solutions.

Had to change the launch settings on SEVERAL games so they actually launch and dont crash this is not to include firewall and or other system exemptions.

EVERYONE has to change nvidia card settings to get the correct visual look for certain games as an example DSIII and BGIII look blurry and washed out of if you use App settings and not card settings.

Baldurs Gate III running in vulkan wont properly use any aa solution so you have to play in DX11.

I hate when PC players pretend there arent issues, You are talking to someone that games primarily on PC not someone that doesnt know.

There still buying 10+ exclusives on the PS4 and games like Destiny, or Playstation centric type games. And plus when games go on sale etc. Same with their Nintendo consoles.
Thats still at least £600+ Per person. And imagine thats like for like 5-15% (Im guessing) of Playstation owners who also have PC already.

Also Playstation 1st party games selling on Steam means a certain percentage on of the profits goes to Steam/Valve.

An even smaller number of people who never own PC will migrate to PC for the first time. Thats more PS Store revenue going to Steam. Yes it might be small amount of people, but year after year…..

Im not saying Im correct, but it could be. Maybe in the future it will change, Playstation brand becomes even stronger. Or they launch a PC store/app. Join with Epic etc. Who knows.

But what they are doing right now is working pretty damn well. Not saying you are incorrect, it probably will make sense soon but at the moment, no point rocking the boat when your competitions are still very much in the game. Online games, Remakes, remasters I totally understand being day 1 but even thats happening yet either for games like Uncharted series.

Totally agree on selling games to PC players who wont buy a Playstation for the exclusives. Thats why selling them after a couple years works well. PC players arent gonna say, nah I only wanted it on day 1. Sony’s been happy with the sales

Played FFXV and didn't have anything strange happening. I must be luck.
I don't limit myself to only PS5 controllers or even default drivers if the case so not a problem for me.
Played DSIII and didn't had to do nothing on Nvidia control panel for blurriness or something or any game I had to do this. Must be luck again.
BGIII never played but I doubt any console version is better or have better tweaks for AA and blurriness.

Meanwhile tons of console games still have problem(s) and nothing was ever done...

Just bring everything out on everything and let people buy the box they want. I think it's inevitable within the next ten years. Game pass on PlayStation. Ps plus on xbox. People pay and play the games. Hardwares more or less identical now anyway.

Convenience. Like most who own consoles.

Honest question, then: if there are no console exclusives for Sony or Microsoft, what conveniences do they bring that PC does not bring?

Plug n' Play? You don't have to configure much on PC especially with the way storefronts are now.

Media apps? You get them all and more on PC.

Price? PC usually has consoles beat there, especially with various bundle deals and things like CD Keys.

Cost? With the advances in integrated graphics, lower-end CPUs etc. in two years from now we'll probably have integrated graphics on entry-level CPUs from Intel and AMD that can match or beat what PS5 and Series X provide. And not costing an arm and a leg.

Let alone dedicated GPUs. Stuff like DirectStorage will be in use by then, to. That's only 2024, btw.

Library? More console-centric devs are considering supporting PC a lot more liberally, like Atlus and Capcom. And there are plenty of Steam-only games you'll never get on console (and classic games via GOG never coming to console, either).

So where is the convenience for consoles by that point? I'm not even going to ask if console exclusives don't matter anymore, if the hardware doesn't matter anymore, why don't people pressure Nintendo to adapt to the market and bring their 1P to PC as well? They're a business too and want to make more money, I'm sure.

Just bring everything out on everything and let people buy the box they want. I think it's inevitable within the next ten years. Game pass on PlayStation. Ps plus on xbox. People pay and play the games. Hardwares more or less identical now anyway.

And Nintendo? Why should I be forced to buy a Switch if there's nothing really preventing them from porting their games to PC? I mean, shouldn't they also let me buy the box I want by not "gatekeeping" their software to hardware I'd maybe rather not buy?

We know this, your average casual consumer does not. Hence, they buy a cheaper box of convenience.

With that said, I do think exclusives (whether timed or permanent) are important to a brand's identity.

So BGIII has solution. Cool. What about all the blurry games on consoles? What's the solution?

Bungie is going to stay multiplat.

Bungie is going to teach Sony about running a multi-plat / cross platform GAAS game.

That's the "more multiplatform" IMO for Sony.. their prestige SP titles will likely maintain some exclusivity.. and they aren't going to advertise the when/what either.. keep it mysterious so consumers can't rely on just knowing the game is around the corner for PC.

I think it's safe to say some people are still mad about GAAS becoming a big thing for Sony but it was inevitable.

But the reason for it?

Growth.. publicly traded businesses need growth.. revenue growth.. profit growth.

That's what the stock market is.. you are betting on whether a company will grow it's business.

When you grow, you don't cut out what is working.. you add things to it.. so I wouldn't immediately assume Sony will do anything to it's current output of SP focused titles.. and they are cranking those out quite often.

With that said, I do think exclusives (whether timed or permanent) are important to a brand's identity.

But that's my point: two, maybe three years from now, you'll probably be able to pick up "cheap" desktops and laptops (I mean within the $400 - $500 range) that have similar performance to PS5 and Series X, where you don't have to pay for online play, can get games for cheaper, get access to a lot more apps, and more.

Those are devices that also sell to the casual consumer, and we've already heard from various sources that they don't expect these consoles to reduce in price that much this generation, not the way they did in generations past. So those newer laptops are going to look pretty attractive to them.

Though I can also see what you're saying; the consoles are advertised heavily, they can also advertise bundled games no problem, and they have a branding associated with gaming. General laptops don't no matter how cheap they are, same with desktops. So I get it from that POV.

Guess I'm just more miffed at how when these kind of talks pop up somehow Nintendo never gets put into the conversation. There's nothing inherently more special about their 1P compared to Sony or Microsoft's as to why people just accept they won't (or don't want to) bring their games to other platforms like PC, but it is somehow constantly expected of Sony to follow MS's model down to the letter even when they don't have the same factors really driving their push into PC Microsoft had during the XBO generation. 🤷‍♂️

Convenience and couch play.

I know hardcore PC gamers will say "just hook up the PC to your big screen TV".

Ok, a gamer just finished playing Counterstrike on an LG OLED and have been successful telling the wife and kids to leave him alone for two hours as they wanted to watch Netflix. Now he's done and wants to surf the net, now what? He's going to sit in front of the family's 65" tv doing emails tying up the TV or haul the PC back to the basement to free up the TV? Nobody is going to do that. That's why most people keep PCs away from their TV.

Now someone will say "just buy another good TV just for PC gaming". Anyone can do that. But that assumes someone or a gamer wants to pony up for another TV.

In what dimension PS5 or XsX or any console can run everything (gaming) a pc can, including peripherals?

Lol. I doubt you had any of those problems, even in the past 20 years. What was the last game that have memory leak problems that the user had to make some tweak to work?
I havent experienced a memory leak since the PS360 era PC ports, but Im with Osiris on how frustrating PC gaming can be. Had to rebuild my entire PC because some parts magically failed one day and no one could figure out why. Thats ok, electronics fail, but then there are a lot of issues with peripherals despite more and more games supporting the PS4 controller. There are games like Batman AK that do not support the PS4 controller even when using DS4windows. I had to add it to the steam library to launch it from there to be able to recognize the PS4 controller. Thats just one example. Nearly every PC game I play has some kind of issue at launch.

The folks over in the PC thread can testify to some of my issues. Bought a 3080 recently and even after installing the latest firmware, it crashes nearly all of my games. I was like wtf. Turns out i have to download some third party software called DDU to remove the old install and then do a brand new install of the nvidia drivers. Like come on, why is this even a thing? After that, Red Dead 2 kept crashing until i googled and found out you had to verify the game files to fix that issue. Like come on. Yes, that fixed the issue but why is this even an issue if it needs a simple verify?

I have spent the last 30 days trying to figure out why the UE5 matrix demo keeps crashing. Spent over $50 bucks on new parts and cables, and nothing. I just hope its not an issue when UE5 games start shipping. Now im still sticking with this thing because i still like PC gaming but im not gonna pretend PC gaming has no issues in 2022.
