The six main partners would get replaced by competitors in a flash

Sony = Samsung or Microsoft
Adidas = Nike
Visa = Mastercard
Coca-Cola = Pepsi or Red Bull
Emirates = Qatar Airways or Etihad
Hyundai/Kia = I'm sure there are plenty of car companies that would be interested

No, they really wouldn't

If they get out the issues (with Qatar and FIFA corruption) will get even more exposure. Sponsoring the even would be one of the worst PR moves ever.

Other companies are likely to pick up sponsorship if the original decide to drop out, but they would more than likely be businesses with Qatari interests.

Regardless, replacing them would make people dig deeper, which is what FIFA doesn't want.

qatar, the country ranked 144/167 on the democracy index...

no desert nation stuck in the middle ages should ever be considered, let alone allowed to host the world cup

i hope fans and sponsors alike boycott the qatar tournament

I don't think Russia should have got it either. They are next and that was bought no doubt and their rights abuses among other problems.

China never should have got the Olympics with their human rights abuses.

Fifa and IOC like to use the excuse of spreading the spirit and values of the sport and games but it's complete bs, only for profit.

The countries should be worthy and capable in the right way before getting any such tournament.

These 2 posts pretty much speak my thoughts.

They will never give it to US or UK if they take it away from Qatar because of political reasons. they know the shitstorm that will happen if they take the world cup from a middle eastern country to 2 countries which are not looked at fondly by many in the middle east/ They will give it to a country like France or Germany instead or even Japan or Australia but never US or UK

The only two countries the 2022 WC would go to are either the US which came 2nd in the voting or Australia. If there is a revote you best believe USA is going to try and snatch it. I wish Australia luck.

People have been saying FIFA is corrupt for decades, the IOC is corrupt, the NBA, the UCI, the ATP. No one really cares and it doesn't effect viewing figures either. Sport Sells and the World Cup is like no other opportunity out there. Literally the whole world tunes in. 50% of TV viewers watch the world cup final. FIFA is the only show in town for that kind of exposure.

FIFA tied up long term deals this year for Coca-Cola (until 2022), Adidas (2030), Budweiser (2022), Hyundai/Kia (2022) and Visa (2022). So all these companies were fully aware of the situation but re-upped for the next two WCs anyway.

Its not been mentioned here but Sony's sponsorship is due to end after this world cup. As such they're relatively free to start having a go at Fifa.

A much bigger deal will be when one of the ongoing sponsors who will likely be around for 2022 star kicking up a fuss (say Coca Cola)

Good on Sony though.

Pretty much this. If Brasil was devoured by wildfires tomorrow, we would be hosting 2014. No question - nobody else has the stadiums, infrastructure, and hotel rooms we do.

god i don't even care who gets it at this point just fucking move it from Qatar. Seriously. England, Austrailia, USA, whoever else had a bid, just pick one and get on with it.

What is so bad about Qatar that everyone is against hosting the game there?

Notorious for human rights abuses, i.e. migrant construction workers being brutally exploited and overworked, having wages withheld, being forced to work under extremely dangerous conditions. Despite numerous documentations of abuse, the Qatari government turns a blind eye.

Australia is the same fifa region, so they're more likely to get it.

What the point? Haven't they started building the stadiums?

It's not like they're going to really use them after anyways. Also, a lot of the guys working on them are dying and getting paid/treated like shit.

I say move the World Cup to a new country, the United States would be cool.

The second Sony stops sponsoring them, they're signing a new record deal with Qatar Airways.

Which is good for Sony. They're in a financial turmoil and they would love to find any reason to legally bail out. It just happens to be something we all want to happen, so for once a corporation's actions may do good. I really want all sponsors to request the same as Sony is asking.

In the end, no company with the right mind would blindly go through this and not expect their rep to be ruined if Qatar FIFA goes bad.

Around 1,200 workers have already died: http://www.businessinsider.com/qatar-world-cup-workers-dead-2014-3

They bribed: http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/27652181

They lied in their bid, multiple times.

Air conditioned stadiums? False: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...in-Qatar-despite-fears-over-extreme-heat.html

Number of stadiums? False: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-...ld-cup-soccer-stadiums-amid-rising-costs.html

And it bears repeating: 1,200 workers have died working on the stadiums, and they still have 8 years to go.

yeah but stop being racist amirite?

Sony is one thing (like someone said, you would just see Qatar Airways make a record deal because they have RIDICULOUS money), but Adidas?

Hrm.

Qatar Airways wouldn't quite fit into the Electronics spot occupied by Sony. The spot Qatar would take, is already filled by Emirates. The six main sponsors of FIFA are chosen in such a way they can't compete with each other and yet fill all important spots: automotive, drinks and food, flying, electronics, financial and clothes. So Kia, Coca, Emirates, Sony, Visa and Adidas.

Yep, its obvious they are riding on the train, but in this case, why not.

Won the rights to hosting through bribes, gets up to 50C (122F) in the summer making it extremely hard to play in, alcohol consumption is illegal/very limited, homosexuality is illegal, and slaves have been used for the construction. The Nepalese slaves have been dying at a rate of one per day. Also, Qatar doesn't recognise Israel as a country. Though they are letting the non existent country play.

Loool if you think Microsoft will replace Sony. Sony provides the electronic equipment for broadcasting and Microsoft isn't in that market.

Good point, but they could easily be replaced by another company owned by the ruling family. The amount they're spending on it and the damage losing it would do to their reputation, it would be a no-brainer. It's also another great opportunity for the fat cats at FIFA to siphon more money.

To be fair, Spain doesn't recognise the Gibraltar national team and they're likely to be one of the hosts of Euro 2020. Japan and South Korea hosted the World Cup in 2002 and neither recognise North Korea.

Stadiums havent even begun beyond a hole in the ground bro and every World Cup bid has failed promises look at Brazil now, at least use facts and less exaggeration on the courts of failures. How many times will people ignore the fact that take bribery aside which every nation does and take temperature aside which is legitimate concern but at least say factually stadiums havent gone beyond a hole in the ground to say 1200 deaths are the result of stadium constructions, thats like Fox News level of accuracy

They just broke ground for a hole last month

http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/05/qatar-2022-construction-world-cup-stadium-begins/

How can 1200 people die from a yet to be constructed stadiums

Sony is not going after qatar because of deaths because they at least know facts on the ground they are going after blatant bribery allegations

Building a foundation is part of the construction process... actually it's a very important part of the process. When people talk about stadium construction, they're talking about the whole process, not just the literal building of a stadium. IMO to make that distinction is disingenuous at best.

Besides in your own link you provided, It refers to breaking ground as the 1st phase of construction.

The workers so far have died in the building of infrastructure for the World Cup.

This is weird. Why would sponsors care? Wont they make their money regardless where and who gets to host?

Because they don't want to be associated with slave labor and hundreds of deaths?

The broadcasters buy/rent the cameras from Sony, they are (afaik) unmatched in the TV/Film camera arena.

But as a world cup sponsor they are the technology sponsor. They sponsor the world cup so you buy Bravias, Experias, Playstations and everything else they sell to consumers. The use of Sony broadcast equipment wouldn't stop another tech firm replacing them as sponsor.

edit to add: the 1200 deaths is estimate of total construction deaths across Qatar, not solely related to the World Cup. They built a ton of stuff before they were awarded world cup and people died but it wasn't an international issue. Taking away the world cup won't change this although it has shone a light on the employment practices in Qatar which might now be changed due to the focus on the world cup.

Even though construction for those stadiums just started now, 1200 people have perished before THE FUCKING STADIUMS even got the first golden shovel to go through the ground

Do you not realize, there are many different operations that fall into Stadium Building
Just setting up quarters for workers to live in has been such a sad fact, that they are dieing from just living there
Watch this:
(Video shows dead body for Nepalese ritual, so please be prepared if you are going to watch)
http://bluefoottv.com/projects/e60-qatars-world-cup/

Look at what has happened BEFORE the groundwork to even start building has resulted in 1200 deaths
It will only escalate
It might not be 100% Stadium Building cause it, but the preparation leading to it did
