Sony Interactive Entertainment Files Patent For PSVR 2 Input Device

IbizaPocholo

NeoGAFs Kent Brockman

Sony has filed a new patent that appears to show an input device for the PSVR 2. This patent was published by Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan.

In the patent, we can see a new form of input device that will use a camera and light-emitting units to track the position of the user’s hand. It appears to work in conjunction with a head-mounted display as shown in the drawings of the patent suggesting that it could be for PSVR 2.

As it stands with most of these patents, they are just hypothetical and we don’t know what will be used in the final PSVR 2. We do know that a successor to the PSVR is coming, but Sony hasn’t shared a release date or any other details for it so far.

The patent is in Japanese and appears to explain the problem of detecting the movement of the player’s hands as they see an image on the head-mounted display.

The gist of the patent (at least from what we have gathered so far) is basically to accurately track the movement of the player’s hands and reflect that in a game. The patent explicitly mentions an HMD 2 which will have a front-facing camera.

As shown in Figure 1, the input device 100 is used, for example, with a head-mounted display (HMD) 2. The user wears the HMD 2 on his/her head and holds the input device 100 in his/her right hand and/or left hand. The HMD 2 has a forward-facing camera. The input device 100 has a plurality of light emitting parts H, which will be described later. The positions of the light emitting parts H are detected through the camera. Based on the positions of the light emitting parts, the position and orientation of the input device 100 (i.e., the position and orientation of the user’s hand) are calculated. The input device 100 has a plurality of operation components (e.g., operation buttons, operation sticks, touch sensors, etc.) that the user operates with his/her fingers, as described below. The display section of the HMD2 shows the position of the input device 100, its posture, and the operations performed on the operation components. The display of the HMD2 shows a moving image (e.g., a game image) generated based on the position of the input device 100, its posture, and the operations performed on the operation components.
The calculation of the user’s movement will be performed by HMD 2 (PSVR 2). This will be done from the information processing device in PSVR 2. This can also be done through an external information processing device. All of this data will be transmitted to the PSVR 2 through either wireless or wired.

The calculation of the position and posture of the input device 100 may be performed by the information processing device mounted on the HMD2. The calculation of the position and posture of the input device 100 may be performed by an information processing device mounted on the HMD2 or by an external information processing device (e.g., a game device separate from the HMD2 or a personal computer). The input device 100 may have a motion sensor (e.g., accelerometer, gyroscope). The information processing unit may calculate the position and posture of the input device 100 based on the output of the motion sensor as well as the position of the light emitting part H. The generation of the moving image may also be performed by the information processing device mounted on the HMD 2 or by an external information processing device. When the calculation of the position, etc. of the input device 100 and the generation of the moving image are performed by an external information processing device, the image information acquired by the camera is transmitted wirelessly or wired to the external information processing device. The generated moving image information is transmitted from the external information processing device to the HMD2 wirelessly or wired.
The patent also mentions that this input device might have a microphone or speaker, or more sensors to track the operating state of this input device, or their quantity supposedly in case of multiplayer games.

Plays with kids toys, in the adult gaming world
Controllers look very aerodynamic big step up from Move
Really interested on how far they will be able to enhance the graphical quality within the virtual world
expecting a generational leap at least PS4 quality this time around

PSVR1 is better then quest 2 in terms of aliasing, lenses and image quality.

uhm, what??? PSVR has worse image quality than my Galaxy S7 when using Oculus Gear with it.

PSVR is one of the worst headsets on the market, it's honestly hard to go back to after using almost any other VR device... the tracking alone is so fucking bad

the Quest 2 wipes the floor with it in almost every way

lol, quest 2 is better than psvr in every way.

No.
PSVR1 has far better black levels.
Quest 2 had ghosting issues.
Quest 2s had a pretty terrible IPD adjustment with only 3 levels.

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Everyone on the planet knows PSVR2 will prevail like the first did your wallet will get the hell beat out of but Sony is off to a good vr start and a lot of that was with beat saber and fire point going forward I believe they need a big AAA game to go all in on VR.

You said image quality before, is that not a thing now? Because for someone who owns both, Quest 2 is on another level. The max resolution absolutely crushes psvr's ceiling.

I'm not sure what that reddit post proves, some people got rays from the old versions? That post is a year old, where are all the people abandoning the platform if it's so bad? It went on sell to sell 10+ million in a year.

Ghosting images is part of image quality, but that is a padantic argument that is not necessary.

I can only talk about my own experience with the product.
Maybe it has improved, I don't know I haven't tried one recently, but that was my experience. And black levels + ipd adjustment is something that has not been fixed.

The patent system seems rather pointless, this looks like an oculus controller with the ring around your wrist instead of fist, pretty similar button layout. Uses IR markers so the HMD cameras can track it yada yada. Facebook either don't give enough of a shit to enforce their patent (which I doubt) or they can't because this is different enough. Yet we have patent trolls taking companies to court over more miniscule shit that should never have been able to be patented.

In what universe? Have you even used a Quest 2? The display is leagues better than the PSVR without any of the screen door effect.

If you check his post history(Quest 2 + his username) he's got a vendatta against Quest 2. He had some issues with it and motion sickness, then got a refund. Claims he might have gotten a faulty unit and since then all his post activity about Quest 2 is either bashing it or slight backhands.

Since when is my actual experience with a product a vendetta?

You really have to be delusional to think that just because someone does not have a positive opinion on a product it means they are bashing or backhanding it.

Says the guy who thinks PSVR has superior image quality. Anyway, I hope you get over the experience. I got a broken bike for Christmas in the mid 90s and I'm still not over it.
Lol, it doesn't bother me, I returned the Quest 2 with no issues. If people want to be upset when somone states the problems of a product thats on them.
And yeah Id rather have lower resolution then bad ghosting and black levels.

No one is upset, I assure you. But your negativity extends far beyond just some bad product experience, you make sure to say often how VR is just some tiny little niche and you will argue at lengths over it. So, you're invested far beyond that supposed bad experience. And you can remain in the vocal minority with PSVR vs Quest 2 image quality, that's completely fine, but I've never heard that opinion ever outside of neogaf and I'm on various VR threads and Reddit VR subs(even PSVR). Especially considering all the other trades off with terrible tracking etc, etc, etc.

PSVR has very little to no screen door effect despite having very low-resolution thanks to the fact that it is a true RGB subpixel per pixel display just like the Quest 2. The Quest 2 has a high resolution and Pixel density as well it should as it is newer than PSVR.

You see the problem here is framing things with your opinion,

Right off the bat you are trying to smear me by framing my opinion as "your negativity"

I make sure to say often that VR is niche?
Well it is what I think, theres nothing wrong with that! this is not an echochamber of only praise. And ive only mentioned it a handful of time, its not like im talking about it every week, so you fail at trying to portray me like that.

Quest 2 has a higher resolution advantage but ive already said that quests 2 ghosting problem is why I said it had inferior image quality. I was not only talking about only resolution. Image quality is not only resolution.

Well, everything is an opinion. That's the point of this forum. It's my opinion that the consistency and variety of your negativity of VR are reflected in a bad experience or outright made up. That's not where it ends though, just the start.
It's the investment you make in VR discussion that is key here, about something you don't even like AND have motion sickness, yet you're quick to assert your experience as awful and fly into every VR thread and hash it out over and over. And it's not just negativity that the product sucks, it's that it will suck for a long time is your stance. We've all seen that opinion before, it's fine, but it's the combination and consistency that makes you a unique poster in this regard. So is my opinion ok or does it need policing? I can be wrong and be fine with it.
You had ghosting supposedly that affected your "image quality", but you also had every other google search Quest user issue imaginable.

I dont like motion sickness, that does not mean Im not interested in VR and want it to improve.

I dont fly into every VR thread its been about a month since I last posted about VR.
Now you are just mistating my opinion, I think VR will be niche until these issues are solved. Even zukenberg thinks this.

So you are just spouting misinformation about my consistency posting about this, i dont post about it that often and as you said yourself "Well, everything is an opinion. That's the point of this forum" so even you admit that the point bof a forum is to post opinions, so whats the problem?

And i dont know why you think every quest user is imaginable?

No, you somehow have every problem imaginable for a Quest user. IPD, and the black levels bother you to the point its unbearable, and ghosting, motion sickness, etc etc.
Its just issues that normally a person might experience one of these, but everything bothers you somehow. On top of being extremely negative about VR in general, while supposedly being interested in it.
And I'm not mistaking you for anyone.
But hey man, maybe I've got it all wrong. Just pointing it out for future reference, anyone can look it up.

Where have I being extremely negative about VR in general? Here ive only spoke about my quest 2 gripes.
I dont know maybe because I came from a PSVR is why I was disappointed with the LCD black levels, 3 tier ipd adjust and ghosting problems, for a 2nd gen device I thought these issues would not be there or in the black level case not as bad.

Im glad you and others enjoy quest 2 though. But for me I won't be getting a quest product until these issues are improved, but Im quite interested in PSVR2, Im glad it comes with controllers and inside out tracking and it will likely improve apon the PSVR1's lower resolution.

I've accomplished what I wanted or at least make a mental note now. People can see for themselves in post history without dragging it on. Cheers.

All my post history will show is that I have had issues with quest 2 and my thoughts on the VR market.
You and your whole smear campaign against me is laughably transparent and frankly bizzare, are you really that hurt that someone has issues with the quest 2?

Hum wait, hasn't that technology and patent filled ages ago since it's exactly how the first (modern) VR controller were tracked?

Geez. People have issues with Quest all the time, or any device. People genuinely don't like VR too, and that's fine. You're case is different and I explained why. Maybe it flew of you're head or you're playing dumb. Doesnt matter I guess. "Smear campaign." Lol

You didnt explain anything, you just said a bunch of falsehoods.

Just because you say something does not make it true.

Just because you dispute it doesn't make it false either. And I never said my suspicions were fact, I simply listed them and you're bothered by it.

VR glasses that require an external "package" in order to function at all are not what I would call complete.
I thought the psvr 2 would be wireless and far less cables than its predecessor. I would wait until it comes out until we make judgements about the device.

It could work like oculus quest 2.

No, it's not wireless.
People keep talking about it being wireless, but one of the few things we know for sure is that it connects via a single cord. Hideaki Nishino confirmed that.

Backward compatibility with PSVR1 games hasn't been mentioned at all officially so I'm considering that to be not happening, despite what supposed insiders are saying.

I thought they specifically said they weren't planning on doing any backwards compatibility.

Shame. At least its only one cord. I had a hard time setting up psvr 1 without looking at the manual every damn time.

I have no doubt that PSVR1 has better image quality image than Quest 2.
Just in another universe in the metaverse.
One far away from ours.
One where laws of physics are radically different.

I have both headsets. Quest 2 is superior to PSVR1 but not in every way.

PSVR1 was Oled, Quest 2 is LCD, so of course PSVR1 had better black levels.

It also had motors to adjust distance between eyes very precisely, unlike Quest 2 which only has big mechanical steps. Those steps are too big to adjust the distance properly in my opinion...

The third thing where PSVR1 was superior is comfort.

All the other parts, Quest 2 is superior, obviously since it released 5 years later.
