This isn't just about digital though. Gaas and pisspoor first party output have been common complaints about Sony all generation long. They way they went about cutting off physical disc for PS5 was just the final straw for a lot of us.
But we are going to point out "dramatic cunts" then let's start with the over the corporation defense being put on display. Fucking cringe man
I too think the core fans will stick around. It's too big of a step to pull out now.
But they have to go through all the 5 stages of grief first.
Denial > Anger > Bargaining > Depression > Acceptance.
They're still in the anger phase.
Eventually we'll see them construct a reason why it's not the end of the world anyway.
And so on.
I just think it's kinda brutal of Sony to do this to their core fans. They made such a big deal of doing physical the right way during the PS4 generation. They essentially made physical a reason to choose PlayStation over anything else and made their fans really champion physical and invest in it. Fans has since then used retail sales as a showcase how big PlayStation is and has mocked Nintendo for the key card thing and so on, physical the right way has essentially been a pillar for their core fans.
Then they pulled the rug under their feet.
And no rumors or anything to make fans get adjusted to this ahead of the announcement. It just came out of nowhere. Brutal!
To be honest, Microsoft should've been first to announce this. They barely exist in retail anyway. Some stores don't stock XBOX at all. An announcement would've still made a splash on social media but not nearly like what we see now for Sony. For XBOX fans it's not nearly as big of a deal, majority are already digital and using subscriptions, similar to how music is consumed, and many have one leg in the PC space already where digital is the norm.
Microsoft also have that transfer solution cooking that Jez talked about, where you can turn a disc into a digital license. Moving to digital feels like a natural progression there. But I guess Microsoft is still scared to do anything with that after the Xbox One PR fiasco.
