Sony PC Storefront makes too much sense

It makes entirely too much sense for Sony to go live with their own PC Launcher/Storefront, it makes sense for their games to be exclusive to that storefront and it even makes sense for them to support it with Day 1 releases.

  • Sony makes 30 percent of revenue from all 3rd party software sales on PS5
  • They could emulate this with 30 percent of revenue from all 3rd party software sales on their PC launcher
    • Competing with Steam aka why would someone use the PS5 launcher, well Sony is arguably the top software developer for mature games on the planet right now. Their games have interest. I would be surprised if they don't go live with a launcher before Spider-Man 2 comes to PC
  • Steam revolt? Let's say 50 percent of the people who would buy a Sony game on Steam would buy it exclusively on their PC launcher. Let's say the Steam game would have sold 2 million copies at 60 dollars for 120 million in revenue. Sony ends up with 84 million in this case, but no residual income from 3rd party royalties. From their own store, they would get 60 million plus 3rd party royalties
  • Why would developers want to put their games on Sony's launcher? First off, why not? Second, maybe Sony makes it worth their while? Maybe 25% royalties on games that are in the PS5 and PC stores. Maybe 15-20% royalties if the games are exclusive to both stores
  • Sony loses money on hardware sales, so the PC Storefront would probably have a higher margin.
    • As a result, there isn't much loss involved with doing day 1 release as long as the game is exclusive to their PC storefront. Now that doesn't mean that the other PC games the person buys will be on that storefront, but I think it's worth the attempt
  • Sony could probably work their exclusive deals for content to be on PS5 and PC but in their storefront only

Is there a reason certain people seems to insist on a Playstation PC store?

I think Sony should have their own launcher on the PC. I don't think it needs to push for exclusivity. They should still put their games on other storefronts (specially GOG!!). If anything, I think it would be great just for their first party games and have it tied to the PSN account and they should bring back their cross buy program).

Epic had to bribe people with a free game every week for the last several years, and it still barely put a dent in Steam's marketshare. It's over.

No it's not over. It's just that every other attempt at a PC storefront has been lazy and half baked. It's like the people running these companies don't actually play PC games in order to understand the many reasons why someone might decide to purchase games on Steam instead of elsewhere.

The moment someone gets it through their thick skull that they need to compete on features and price then they might have a fighting chance to gain some market share. Attempting to force gamers hands by removing/blocking games from Steam and and bribes have been proven to not work.

Is there a reason certain people seems to insist on a Playstation PC store?

God of war delay avatar crew typing out fantasies of sabotage hoping someone at Sony is dumb enough to go along with it.

Sony don't need to compete with steam.

PSN is probably one of the highest revenue generator in video games, they could open their own storefront and move away from steam and losing some sales won't be a big deal.

It all comes down to if sony care enough to put out a storefront.

Only way this works is if they have a like 10-20 dollar fee to make their Playstation copy turn into a universal copy that also works for PC.

CEO Tim Sweeney says that players should look forward to paying less on the Epic Games Store in the future. While Epic leaves pricing decisions completely in developers' hands

It's truly amazing how retarded they are. Should have just kept the cut at 30% and actually absorbed the lower prices themselves.

Tell that to EA, MS, and Activision.

Having your own launcher doesnt guarentee you enough customers.

Steam makes sense, because it has over 120m userbase. They have more chance selling, compared to their own store.

EA, MS, and Activision don't have the leverage or the games that Sony does.

Again, Sony can easily leverage PSN in order to get content if not exclusive content, that's not something that EA, MS, and Activision can do.

Sony also has a far more diverse catalog of quality titles compared to the companies you listed.

Some PC fanboys are angry at the idea of another launcher, but more casual fans won't care. There isn't a cost to a Steam account, so there is no cost prohibition in installing a 2nd launcher and net new gamers can choose to play wherever makes most sense to them.

Sony would absolutely be dumb not to try. They are certainly in a better position than Epic, which has only been around for 4 years and has 62 million active users per month and 200 registered users.

It will gonna happen 100%. Will be another EGS at best, but it will happen. Probably will have PSN integration and maybe PS Now.

LoL. On PC Sony has close to zero leverage. ABK used its own launcher for years and Microsooft had its store. Yet Steam is still a king.

PC isnt PS.

PC users dont care. They want all their games on 1 catelog. Its why windows store is dead.

PC launchers are too much, and people have a hard time remembering their user account, and managing all those launchers. Its like having too much streaming services.

And they would fail. Epic has spent more money on their store, which Sony wont spend. They dont have 3rd party games like epic. They are lucky if they are able to get 20m userbase.

Every publisher has visions of dollars pouring in from their shitty launcher only to crawl away battered and bloodied. Sony is doing it right so far.

I think the eventual move will be the way rockstar does it. Put games on their own launcher with trophies and all that. Get their sales from people who can’t wait and keep 100% of revenue. Then a few months later put them on steam.

A launcher that competes with Steam for 3rd parties would be a guaranteed flop.

Even Sony should be smart enough to see that ditching Steam on PC is a losing proposition.

They can and probably should include their PSN connection system in game to keep the PC ports in the Sony/PS ecosystem while still being solidly on Steam.

Example, I can play Halo on Steam and it’s still Xbox connected earning achievements.

You seem to be struggling

#1 PS Now doesn't exist anymore, it's PS+ Premium
#2 They don't have leverage on PC, they have PSN... do you know how leverage works? Sony can offer companies discounts on PSN on PS4/5 to support game sales on PSN on PC.

Imagine Capcom sells 10 million copies of Resident Evil 4 Remake on PS5 and PC. If Sony promises 20% royalties across PSN instead of 30, Capcom can make 560 million dollars instead of 490 million dollars. That's 70 million reasons to want to have your game on PSN instead of Steam.

And it works for Sony too because originally they were only going to make (if 5 million is the ps5 split) 105 million dollars through the PS5 store, now they make 140 million dollars.

Obviously, this is assuming quite a few of variables, but hopefully, it paints a picture of why sony and 3rd parties would want it to work out.

Most of EAs games are generic trash, and I doubt their PC sales are nearly as high as their console sales. I'll have to take a look at their financial reports and see if they have a breakdown.

Your assumption is that PC sales would say the same no matter what store they appear on?

I'm talking long term, initially you'd probably see promotions similar to what you saw with EGS. Sony also has the ability to throw free games at people just to get them to download the launcher, not to mention PS+ membership if it ends up including Crunchyroll.

Again, it wont work. You are asking those devs to ditch Steam. MS would have done that for their windows.

Capcom makes 50% on steam, and epic(i dont know what games they have there).

Wont happen. 3rd party makes way more money on stores with too many userbase. Devs would need a higher incentive, if they were to go to PS PC.
Which means, Sony would lose alot of money on both front stores, in order to attract those devs. Sony wont compromise losing money like Epic.

Most of those EGS users would tell you to go fuck yourself for implying that it's a want.

People are forced to use it and it's not exactly been kind to Epic as an overall brand.
It's not about want, it's about the realities of business.

Obviously, Sony has the leverage to break into the PC market and as such they'd be foolish not to.

I don’t think you get it. On PC, Sony is just another publisher similar to EA and Activision Blizzard.

These games don't need to be exclusive on the PS store on PC, especially if Sony isn't paying for exclusivity.

But if Sony's royalties on PC are 20% compared to Steam's 30 percent a 70 dollar game could be sold on the PS Store for 60 dollars and still have a more profitable margin, not to mention boosting your profit on the PS5 version.

Sony doesn't need to pay more at all, they just need to give publishers a break on royalties at least initially to get the store up and running.
