Square Enix’s president reiterates desire to make ‘play to earn’ blockchain games

In a new interview with Yahoo Japan, the exec said he believed that focusing only on traditional games would be “not enough” for the company going forwards, and described his vision for titles in which users would create content and be rewarded for their work (Matsuda previously said Square Enix could create its own cryptocurrency).

“In the future, we would like to try our hand at providing ‘autonomous game content’,” the president told Yahoo.

“Until now, in most games, we provided the content as a finished product and the players played that content. However, there are a certain number of players in the world who want to contribute to making games more interesting, by creating new settings and ways of playing.”

He added: “In the future, we want to utilise the power of these people to create games that will continue to evolve.

“If, instead of relying on goodwill, we can also provide incentives to those who contribute to development by utilising technologies such as blockchain, there is a possibility that innovative and interesting content can be created from the ideas of users.”

I personally found the bit of the interview throwing shade on Japanese devs imitating western devs and focusing too much on the global gaming market being a bad thing funnier than this considering their big title for this year is supposed to be Forspoken.

It still sounds like ceos don't know what block chain is but have to shove it in games. This is so dumb.

By the time a game comes out with this the industry has already moved on. No one wants this in games. It's not going to be successful

Ah.. another person who has to say something wants to use buzzwords because the are "hipp" right now.
There are far better, less complicated and less resource intensive solutions for such things.
Blockchain in games makes no sense at all other than using the misunderstood hype.

They are literally admitting they won't bother to finish making the games they put out in the future. Incredible.

It's going to be so glorious when this bubble pops and it takes out all the stupid companies that decided to get involved along with it.

So is there like a gas leak in Japan? Seems like every game developer on the eastern end is just racing to become Konami 2.0.

Leave this block chain shit for the birds, Square. You have a very specialized skillset, and you need to keep to it. You need to continue:

-Announcing projects seventeen years early.

-Smoking crack before naming the next Kingdom Hearts game.

-Begging me to be excited.

-Failing to make anything worth a fuck besides Final Fantasy. Most of the time.

I don't get Square-Enix, they constantly swing from bad, yet experimental games, awesome games, middle of the road games, awesome remasters, bad remasters, they treat customers like gold with FF14, then they start releasing shit like babylon's fall, avengers, then they start talking blockchain bs...

Square-Enix is the wildest AAA publisher for sure...

And still my favorite AAA publisher because at least they continue to do different things.

I fucking hate business people. Their entire existence revolves around chasing money in every possible way no matter what. Truly despicable.

I wish they'd just spin off Taito and Eidos. All I want out of Square or Enix are the rest of Matsuno's games on Steam.

SE is like that cringe dude in the room who has to do a presentation about how much he doesn’t suck. But instead puts on some music and starts dancing around in shorts and has to be interrupted halfway through to confirm what the point of it is. And the cringe dude just keeps pointing to nomura without saying anything and keeps dancing

Digital trends are the worst.

At least if Coke or Pepsi want to make some more profits, they'll try to mess with prices or the size of the bottle. They'll have different variants too. But the main product is always there to buy. Your choice.

Gaming has morphed from digital stores --> DLC --> boring mtx like cosmetics and dashboard themes --> mtx pay to win --> gambling loot crates/EA ultimate cards --> NFT which is a combo of speculative investing and impulse purchases.

It's getting to a point it mimics a casino where if you pay a game maker $10, what you get back is either $0 or $20.

F*ck them. Stop buying Square Enix games. Every game they make coming out of Japan besides FF7R and FFXIV are shit. And no matter how good the Montreal Studio games are, Square Enix will always say it's not good enough. If SE is serious about making money, start putting more time and effort into your games, and stop it with all of these EFT shit.
