A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away

On April 25, 2014, after a year of ownership by the Walt Disney Company, a StarWars.com press release confirmed that the films of the sequel trilogy would not adhere to the post–Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe, with further comments from LucasBooks Senior Editor Jennifer Heddle confirming that the EU as a whole is no longer considered canon. The EU has been re-termed "Legends," with related publications remaining in print under that banner.

Since then, the only previously published material still considered canon are the six original trilogy/prequel trilogy films, the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series and film, and and the stand-alone Dark Horse Comics arc Star Wars: Darth Maul—Son of Dathomir; which was based on unproduced scripts from The Clone Wars TV series. Most material published after April 25—such as the Star Wars Rebels TV series and all novels beginning with A New Dawn—is also considered part of the new canon, on account of the creation of the Lucasfilm Story Group, which currently oversees continuity as a whole. Characters under the Legends banner are still available for use as needed, even if events concerning them are no longer canon.

The Original Trilogy

Ep_IV_ac00c3f3.jpeg

Nineteen years after the formation of the Empire, Luke Skywalker is thrust into the struggle of the Rebel Alliance when he meets Obi-Wan Kenobi, who has lived for years in seclusion on the desert planet of Tatooine. Obi-Wan begins Luke's Jedi training as Luke joins him on a daring mission to rescue the beautiful Rebel leader Princess Leia from the clutches of the evil Empire. Although Obi-Wan sacrifices himself in a lightsaber duel with Darth Vader, his former apprentice, Luke proves that the Force is with him by destroying the Empire's dreaded Death Star.

Ep_V-4_61ae0512.jpeg

After the destruction of the Death Star, Imperial forces continue to pursue the Rebels. After the Rebellion's defeat on the ice planet Hoth, Luke journeys to the planet Dagobah to train with Jedi Master Yoda, who has lived in hiding since the fall of the Republic. In an attempt to convert Luke to the dark side, Darth Vader lures young Skywalker into a trap in the Cloud City of Bespin. In the midst of a fierce lightsaber duel with the Sith Lord, Luke faces the startling revelation that the evil Vader is in fact his father, Anakin Skywalker.

Ep_VI_58826fba.jpeg

In the epic conclusion of the saga, the Empire prepares to crush the Rebellion with a more powerful Death Star while the Rebel fleet mounts a massive attack on the space station. Luke Skywalker confronts his father Darth Vader in a final climactic duel before the evil Emperor. In the last second, Vader makes a momentous choice: he destroys the Emperor and saves his son. The Empire is finally defeated, the Sith are destroyed, and Anakin Skywalker is thus redeemed. At long last, freedom is restored to the galaxy.

The Prequel Trilogy

Ep_I_1f2afa8a.jpeg

Stranded on the desert planet Tatooine after rescuing young Queen Amidala from the impending invasion of Naboo, Jedi apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi and his Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn discover nine-year-old Anakin Skywalker, a young slave unusually strong in the Force. Anakin wins a thrilling Podrace and with it his freedom as he leaves his home to be trained as a Jedi. The heroes return to Naboo where Anakin and the Queen face massive invasion forces while the two Jedi contend with a deadly foe named Darth Maul. Only then do they realize the invasion is merely the first step in a sinister scheme by the re-emergent forces of darkness known as the Sith.

Ep_II_1fbf40b5.jpeg

Ten years after the invasion of Naboo, the galaxy is on the brink of civil war. Under the leadership of a renegade Jedi named Count Dooku, thousands of solar systems threaten to break away from the Galactic Republic. When an assassination attempt is made on Senator Padmé Amidala, the former Queen of Naboo, twenty-year-old Jedi apprentice Anakin Skywalker is assigned to protect her. In the course of his mission, Anakin discovers his love for Padmé as well as his own darker side. Soon, Anakin, Padmé, and Obi-Wan Kenobi are drawn into the heart of the Separatist movement and the beginning of the Clone Wars.

Ep_III_ca924a64.jpeg

Years after the onset of the Clone Wars, the noble Jedi Knights lead a massive clone army into a galaxy-wide battle against the Separatists. When the sinister Sith unveil a thousand-year-old plot to rule the galaxy, the Republic crumbles and from its ashes rises the evil Galactic Empire. Jedi hero Anakin Skywalker is seduced by the dark side of the Force to become the Emperor's new apprentice -- Darth Vader. The Jedi are decimated, as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jedi Master Yoda are forced into hiding. The only hope for the galaxy are Anakin's own offspring -- the twin children born in secrecy who will grow up to become heroes.

NOTE: I will be excluding Movie Adaptations. While they are still canon and occasionally expand on the story, they are unnecessary unless you've consumed the rest of the stories and still need more. I'm also excluding the entire Young Readers line.

Fourteen year-old Ezra Bridger lives alone on the Outer Rim planet of Lothal. He fends for himself by picking up odd jobs and hustling the unsuspecting Stormtrooper. But when Arena Day arrives - an underground tournament where mighty beasts battle to the finish and all the swindlers, gamblers and no-gooders come from all corners of the planet to make a profit - Ezra is whisked into an unlikely partnership with the fearsome bounty hunter Bossk and enmeshed in a high-stakes chase against an endless fleet of troopers. Ezra isn't willing to trust anyone, but he soon learns that surviving doesn't always mean just fending for himself.

For a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights brought peace and order to the Galactic Republic, aided by their connection to the mystical energy field known as the Force. But they were betrayed—and the entire galaxy has paid the price. It is the Age of the Empire.

Now Emperor Palpatine, once Chancellor of the Republic and secretly a Sith follower of the dark side of the Force, has brought his own peace and order to the galaxy. Peace through brutal repression, and order through increasing control of his subjects’ lives.

But even as the Emperor tightens his iron grip, others have begun to question his means and motives. And still others, whose lives were destroyed by Palpatine’s machinations, lay scattered about the galaxy like unexploded bombs, waiting to go off. . . .

Servants of the Empire is a junior novel series written by Jason Fry and published by Disney–Lucasfilm Press. The novels follow the character Zare Leonis before and during his appearances in the Star Wars Rebels animated series. It was released in four installments.

  • Servants of the Empire: Edge of the Galaxy
  • Servants of the Empire: Rebel in the Ranks
  • Servants of the Empire: Imperial Justice
  • Servants of the Empire: The Secret Academy

tarkin.jpg

Five standard years have passed since Darth Sidious proclaimed himself galactic Emperor. The brutal Clone Wars are a memory, and the Emperor’s apprentice, Darth Vader, has succeeded in hunting down most of the Jedi who survived dreaded Order 66. On Coruscant a servile Senate applauds the Emperor’s every decree, and the populations of the Core Worlds bask in a sense of renewed prosperity.

In the Outer Rim, meanwhile, the myriad species of former Separatist worlds find themselves no better off than they were before the civil war. Stripped of weaponry and resources, they have been left to fend for themselves in an Empire that has largely turned its back on them.

Where resentment has boiled over into acts of sedition, the Empire has been quick to mete out punishment. But as confident as he is in his own and Vader’s dark side powers, the Emperor understands that only a supreme military, overseen by a commander with the will to be as merciless as he is, can secure an Empire that will endure for a thousand generations . . .

heir_to_the_jedi.jpg

The destruction of the Death Star brought new hope to the beleaguered Rebel Alliance. But the relentless pursuit by Darth Vader and the Imperial fleet is taking its toll on Alliance resources. Now the rebels hide in an Outer Rim orbit from which they can search for a more permanent base and for new allies to supply much-needed weapons and materials.

Luke Skywalker, hero of the Battle of Yavin, has cast his lot with the rebels, lending his formidable piloting skills to whatever missions his leaders assign him. But he is haunted by his all-too-brief lessons with Obi-Wan Kenobi and the growing certainty that mastery of the Force will be his path to victory over the Empire.

Adrift without Old Ben's mentorship, determined to serve the Rebellion any way he can, Luke searches for ways to improve his skills in the Force...

Eight years after the Clone Wars ravaged the galaxy, the Republic is no more and the Empire is ascendant. The man who rules as Emperor is secretly a Sith Lord, and with his powerful apprentice, Darth Vader, and all the resources of his vast Imperial war machine, he has placed the galaxy solidly under his heel.

Dissent has been crushed, and freedom is a memory, all in the name of peace and order. But here and there pockets of resistance are beginning to kindle and burn, none hotter than the Free Ryloth movement led by Cham Syndulla.

Now, after many small-scale strikes against the Imperial forces controlling their world, Cham and his fellow freedom fighters take their chance to strike a fatal blow against the Empire and plunge it into chaos by targeting its very heart: Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. . . .

dark_disciple.jpg

For years, the galaxy-wide conflict known as the Clone Wars has raged. The struggle between the rightful government of the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems has claimed the lives of untold billions.

The Force-wielding Jedi, for millennia the guardians of peace in the galaxy, have been thwarted at nearly every turn by the Separatists and their leader, the Sith Lord Count Dooku.

With the war showing no signs of ending, and the casualties mounting each day, the Jedi must consider every possible means of defeating their cunning foe. Whether some means are too unthinkable—and some allies too untrustworthy—has yet to be revealed…

kBlTDfx.jpg

Eight years after the fall of the Old Republic, The Galactic Empire now reigns over the known galaxy. Resistance to the Empire has been all but silenced. Only a few courageous leaders such as Bail Organa of Alderaan still dare to openly oppose Emperor Palpatine.

After years of defiance, the many worlds at the edge of the Outer Rim have surrendered. With each planet’s conquest, the Empire’s might grow even stronger.

The latest to fall under the Emperor’s control is the isolated mountain planet Jelucan, whose citizens hope for a more prosperous future even as the Imperial Starfleet gathers overhead….

weapon_of_a_jedi.jpg

The REBEL ALLIANCE has destroyed the Empire’s dreaded DEATH STAR, but the galaxy remains convulsed by civil war, and the Imperial starfleet is hunting the rebels throughout the galaxy.

LUKE SKYWALKER, the pilot who destroyed the Death Star, is now hailed as a hero. But Luke seeks only to support the freedom fighters, serving the Rebellion behind the controls of his X-wing fighter.

Even as he flies alongside the pilots of Red Squadron, Luke feels stirrings in the mystical energy field known as the Force. And this farm boy turned fighter pilot begins to suspect that his destiny likes along a different path…

Bs4GE9l.jpg

Reeling from their disastrous defeat on Hoth, the heroic freedom fighters of the REBEL ALLIANCE have scattered throughout space, pursued by the agents of the sinister GALACTIC EMPIRE.

One rebel task force protects PRINCESS LEIA, bearing her in secrecy from star to star. As the last survivor of Alderaan’s House of Organa, Leia is a symbol of freedom, hunted by the Empire she has opposed for so long.

The struggle against Imperial tyranny has claimed many rebel lives. As the Empire closes in, Leia resolves to make a sacrifice of her own, lest the cause of freedom be extinguished from the galaxy. . . .

smugglers_run.jpg

It is a period of civil war. The heroic freedom fighters of the REBEL ALLIANCE have won their most important victory thus far with the destruction of the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR.

But the Rebellion has no time to savor its victory. The evil Galactic Empire has recognized the threat the rebels pose, and is now searching the galaxy for any and all information that will lead to the final destruction of the freedom fighters.

For the MILLENNIUM FALCON’s crew, who saved the life of Luke Skywalker during the Battle of Yavin, their involvement with the rebels is at an end. Now HAN SOLO and CHEWBACCA hope to take their reward and settle some old debts. . . .

hPaZZVY.jpg

The second Death Star is destroyed. The Emperor and his powerful enforcer, Darth Vader, are rumored to be dead. The Galactic Empire is in chaos.

Across the galaxy, some systems celebrate, while in others Imperial factions tighten their grip. Optimism and fear reign side by side.

And while the Rebel Alliance engages the fractured forces of the Empire, a lone rebel scout uncovers a secret Imperial meeting. . . .

gwIeSLY.jpg

The Empire is in chaos. As the old order crumbles, the fledgling New Republic seeks a swift end to the galactic conflict. Many Imperial leaders have fled from their posts, hoping to escape justice in the farthest corners of known space.

Pursuing these Imperial deserters are Norra Wexley and her team of unlikely allies. As more and more officers are arrested, planets once crushed beneath the Empire’s heel now have hope for the future. And no hope is greater than that of the Wookiees of Kashyyyk. Heroes of the Rebellion Han Solo and Chewbacca have gathered a team of smugglers and scoundrels to free Kashyyyk from its Imperial slavers once and for all.

Meanwhile, the remnants of the Empire—now under the control of Grand Admiral Rae Sloane and her powerful, secret adviser—prepare to unleash a terrifying counterstrike. If successful, the New Republic may never recover, and anarchy will be loosed upon the galaxy in its greatest time of need…

KcLIYEw.jpg

The Galactic Empire endures. Despite the destruction of its terrifying Death Star by the Rebel Alliance, its oppression spreads undiminished across the stars.

Under the direction of the Emperor and Darth Vader, an army of highly trained, single-minded stormtroopers quashes dissent and destroys resistance.

But on worlds like Sullust, Coyerti, Haidoral Prime, and untold others, rebel forces fight in the trenches, determined to maintain hope against the unrelenting Imperial war machine…

xmMPDvT.png

A shadow has been cast across the galaxy. Where once there were hope and peace, now there are fear and the looming clouds of war. The FIRST ORDER is rising, its power growing, and the NEW REPUBLIC may well be powerless to stop it.

Among the billions upon billions of beings in the galaxy, three individuals will find themselves drawn into the heart of this conflict. Each of them will play a vital role in what is to come. Each of them will face darkness. Each of them will struggle to reach the light.

FN-2187 is a STORMTROOPER, trained by the FIRST ORDER. He is plagued by doubt. On Jakku, a young woman who calls herself REY struggles to live in an isolation necessary for her own survival. And among the stars, POE DAMERON strives to serve a Republic he has always believed in, as sinister powers threaten to break his resolve.

These are their stories in the days, weeks, and months before THE FORCE AWAKENS.

ODlvjlN.png

An entire generation has prospered during an era of peace. The New Republic, governed by the Galactic Senate, has held power for more than two decades. The wars that divided the galaxy are fading into legend.

Yet conflict has begun to take shape within the Senate. In the absence of MON MOTHMA, former leader of the Rebellion and first chancellor of the New Republic, two unofficial but powerful factions have formed—the POPULISTS, who believe individual planets should retain almost all authority, and the CENTRISTS, who favor a stronger galactic government and a more powerful military.

Only the greatest heroes of the war are still honored by all. A ceremony honoring the memory of BAIL ORGANA has drawn the Senate together in rare harmony. It is a day of celebration, but even now, the divisions among the worlds of the galaxy are growing wider…

lBHeu5n.png

Following her experiences with the Jedi and the devastation of Order 66, Ahsoka is unsure she can be part of a larger whole ever again. But her desire to fight the evils of the Empire and protect those who need it will lead her right to Bail Organa, and the Rebel Alliance...

For years, the Clone Wars have raged across the galaxy. Countless worlds have been ensnared in the conflict between the Galactic Republic and the Separatist army led by the devious Sith Lord Count Dooku. While rumors spread that the Separatists are nearing completion of a superweapon, fear grips the Republic. In response, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine has tasked a secret team of researchers with perfecting a battle station for the Republic:

the Death Star.

lBbtfnX.jpg

It is a time of darkness. With the end of the Clone Wars, and the destruction of the Jedi Order, the evil Emperor Palpatine rules the galaxy unopposed.

Far away, in the unknown regions of Wild Space beyond Imperial borders, MILO and LINA GRAF accompany their explorer parents on their expeditions.

As the Grafs scout a remote and unmapped swamp-world, the shadow of the Empire draws ever nearer...

Two questions: Do you want me to add dates? I can put in Years from the Battle of Yavin so you know where it is in the timeline and I can add release dates when things came out.
Up to y'all.

That's a lot of work into that OP! Great job. I can see this being a great resource over time if it's kept up to date for people who want to jump in in the future.

I've still lost all interest in the EU after Disney dumped the old one. I just don't think I could get that invested again.

Maybe my feelings will change one day, but it's been over 2 years.

Good work OP. I've been trying my hardest to keep with most of the comics and the novels but I've missed some here and there.

Bloodline has been the best one so far but I still need to pick up Catalyst.

I'm really hoping that Zare and Merei come back at some point, but I get the feeling they won't since Jason Fry said Lucasfilm told him he could end Servants of the Empire however he wanted. It's striking how well that series portrayed how people become warped under fascism considering its a kids series.

Awesome thread. I've been keeping up on the canon almost entirely, but I still haven't read Aftermath 2, the kids novels, or the short stories. I also never bothered with the iOS games.

Right! I wanted to ask everyone where they were on the canon.

I've completed everything but the TV shows, Ezra's Gamble, Servants of the Empire, Adventures in Wild Space, and the 25 short stories. I'm in the middle of Twilight Company right now. And though I'm not listing the adaptations, I do plan on grabbing the Rogue One audiobook.

PSA: Don't read Star Wars novels. Get the audiobook instead: they go full tilt on the production. Lightsabers, music, blasters, everything. It's almost an audio drama.

I've completed everything except for Adventures in Wild Space and the European Rebels comics that were not released in Britain (it's still ongoing In Germany, so hopefully they translate them one day). Also never bothered with the games.

The Rebels comics are surprisingly good and enhance the show. They even tie into the wider canon; for example, the Specters rescue a senator who later shows up in SW Annual #1.

So they wiped out volumes upon volumes of EU and then took to just filling the shelves back up with new EU? I had no idea. They even brought Thrawn back!

Adhering to the EU would've been too cumbersome when creating the sequel trilogy and standalone films, so they decided to start over with a clean slate so they could let the filmmakers do what they want. It also lets them purge the incredibly bad elements from the EU while retaining the good stuff in a new form.

No, I got that, I just didn't realize they'd just get back to making a whole big new EU so fast.

Nice work! Just finished the Marvel Vader series which was pretty good. Waiting for my Doctor Aphra #1 to arrive

Listing what I've read for fun:
Aftermath
Aftermath: Life Debt
Ahsoka
Catalyst
Lost Stars
Bloodline
Battlefront: Twilight Company
Before the Awakening
A New Dawn

After Rogue One I definitely want to get into the new EU. Guess the best way is to read the prequel novel to RO and got through the Clone Wars show first?

The Brazilian Heir to the Jedi cover is even better.

Man that makes the book seem so much better. I didn't actually mind the plot despite the lack of a villain, but I thought the writing was terrible and it felt like a young adult novel that had been stretched out for some reason. And Nakari was wasted. Luke's noodle tests were fun though.

Anyone have a book recommendation list?

Any particular era or subject?

After Rogue One I definitely want to get into the new EU. Guess the best way is to read the prequel novel to RO and got through the Clone Wars show first?

Plus the Rebels show, Servants of the Empire, and the novels Tarkin and Lords of the Sith. Also Twilight Company if you want something tonally similar though it's set post-ANH.

Yep. Catalyst is great and really enhances Rogue One without spoiling anything (which doesn't matter much since you have seen it, but it was a nice way to present it). You can watch Rebels without having seen The Clone Wars, but you might as well watch both if you have the time.

100% Non canon

Trust me, I used three sites to make sure I didn't miss anything.

I guess when the game lets you make a squad composed of Palpatine, Wedge, Biggs, Lando and a B-2 Battle Droid, canon flies out the window. LOL

Excellent thread though - subscribed!

Mostly looking for post-RotJ stuff.

Read a lot of the old EU stuff so that's where I'd like to start.

I'm also interested in pre-Clone Wars stuff, if any of that exists yet.

What Malyse just posted a few posts above me is pretty much all that exists post-RotJ so far plus Before the Awakening and the Tales short story collection. In terms of books, at least. There's also comics and short stories. If you want something connecting to TFA though, go with Bloodline. Aftermath was ok, Life Debt was much better, but the trilogy isn't complete yet. Lost Stars is great fun but you have to like cheesy, melodramatic romance. I think that's fitting for SW though.

There aren't any Pre-AotC novels yet, though Catalyst starts off during the war and continues after it. It seems like they're heavily focusing on the Dark Times and post-RotJ right now for the books, and the OT and some PT for the comics.

For post-ROTJ, we actually don't have much content yet. Comics-wise, there is Shattered Empire, C-3PO's one-shot, and Poe Dameron. Poe is definitely the best of that lot, but Shattered Empire is right after Endor if that interests you.

In terms of books, Lost Stars spans from before A New Hope to the Battle of Jakku, which ended the Galactic Civil War. It also happens to be considered one of the best works in the new canon.

There is also the Aftermath trilogy, which is also shortly post-Endor. Sadly, despite being the "headline" books of the new canon currently, they are pretty terribly written. I'd definitely recommend the audio books for them, as I couldn't stand the actual writing style.

Bloodline is a few years before The Force Awakens, and stars Leia. It's pretty good, as it is written by the author of Lost Stars, but isn't quite at the same level as that story.

Your Pre-Clone Wars options are pretty limited. Obi-Wan and Anakin was a decent mini-series, but not mandatory reading. The Star Wars ongoing comic is about to have a pre-Phantom Menace Yoda arc. Finally, a Darth Maul mini-series will start in February that is before Phantom Menace.

Just saw Rogue One. Did I hear the words
Dark Saber
mentioned in project names?

I'm pretty sure it was Black Saber.

I believe Jyn said "Black Saber". There is a canonical Darksaber, but it's an actual black bladed ancient lightsaber used as a symbol of power on Mandalore, not a wacky superweapon commandeered by a Hutt like in the EU. It was featured on TCW and now on Rebels.
