Stolen CD Projekt data including Cyberpunk 2077 source code has reportedly leaked

CD Projekt Red first revealed in February that it had fallen victim to a targeted cyber attack. In a statement, the developer said some of its internal systems had been compromised and “certain data” stolen.

The stolen data was said to include the source code files for CD Projekt Red’s game development engine, RedEngine, and titles including The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, an upcoming ray-traced version of The Witcher 3, Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales and Cyberpunk 2077.

The data was originally put up for auction on the dark web with a starting price of $1 million and a buy now price of $7 million, but the seller pulled the lot, with the condition of no further distribution or selling, after receiving an outside offer which was deemed to be satisfactory, cyber intelligence firm Kela reported.

Now, according to databreaches.net, the same data from the CD Projekt breach has been shared online. According to an alleged text file posted online:

The alleged files are password protected, with the password being shared with users in exchange for a $10 donation.

It’s claimed that the group has shared software developer kits for PS4, PS5, Switch and Xbox Series X without password protection in order to prove its legitimacy. One forum user claims to have obtained these files.

The ransomware attack on CD Projekt Red was allegedly carried out by a group called HelloKitty, which is said to have posted the source code of CD Projekt Red’s Gwent card game online prior to the auction earlier this year.

The culprits claimed they had stolen source code for the aforementioned games as well as documents relating to the company’s accounting, legal, HR and more.

If CD Projekt Red did not “come to an agreement” with them within 48 hours, the culprits said they would sell or leak the content.

CD Projekt Red said it would not give in to the demands and that it had approached relevant authorities including law enforcement and IT forensic specialists.

Sad to see some responses here. They've generally made great games and only one game faltered somewhat (only technically), which they are continuously trying to support.
Even if they werent, this is not something that should be cheered on. As one of the few companies still making singleplayer games which are worth something, this is extremely sad and I wont want to see them go under or get affected severely. We only realize value once we lose something I guess.

You reap what you sow, and CDPR certainly sowed a lot of bullshit with Cyberjunk.

The responses here are of course juvenile and nonsensical. "Developer didn't give me the game I want so I'm totally cool with all their work being stolen and leaked online for the lulz". Grow up, yes they fucked up with CP2077 but that in no way justifies this shit and if you genuinely take this that serious then you need to sort your priorities out.

Man some people here are real pieces of shit
Just like how CDPR continued to lie about the last gen versions of Cyberpunk ('its in a great shape'). Wouldnt let gaming journo's talk, or even mention, anything about the last gen version. Wouldnt reveal ANY gameplay footage of the last gen version before launch, not even screenshots lol. Would only let reviewers review the PC port, and not console version.
Basically stuff that the likes of EA wont even do.

They were a loved company, a trusted company, and THEY have brought on these responces, them and only them.

Hell this thread probbaly wouldnt even exist if CDPR hadnt been so scummy. These hackers usually go after companies they have a grudge against.

Yep, people so salty that they wish the company to fail. A lot of character development needed :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

I don’t get their thinking if the hackers are actually grumpy console gamers, it’s like stealing the recipes from your favorite restaurant and expect to get better food on your plate. I could easily imagine CDPR to just ignore consoles alltogether going forward. Maybe they’ll finish the next gen CP2077 versions but I can see them focusing on PC only for the next The Witcher game. Source code is out there anyway, make your own game.

That will never happen, they are way to greedy to leave console money on the table.

One has to wonder how many hooks, call backs, obfuscated code, third party libraries or cloud resources and what not exists in such source code. I'd imagine if you didn't sandbox firing that up or scan your compiled runtime well one could be traced fairly easily for using it.

1. it is just a videogame
2. on PC it's still a great game
3. since the last 5-10 years it makes no sense to preorder a game you get on your console/pc almost instantly 24/7
4. all platforms offered a refund, even Sony.
5. no one forces you to buy it
5. not an excuse to ruin a company or jeopardize employees' jobs
6. it's stealing
7. sorry for your butthurt but see above

The devs lied about the game and tried to hide how broken the game was. You reap what you sow.

Still looking forward to play C2077 (got it cheap on GOG last summer), just waiting for more patches and dlc maybe, the vanilla(E3?) Witcher build sounds interesting.

Wtf are you talking about. You've been indoctrinated too apparently. Since when is somebody entitled to steal all your assets and personal data just because they didn't come up to your childish expectations and dreams about the game? And yes, they are working hard on fixing the game. If you have any legal concern, then go in front of the court. These "hackers" have no right to do stuff like this, they're just parasites.

And ? Because they released a bad product once (I don't agree personally with this point as I think the game has truly insane artistic qualities you rarely see in other products but I understand some can think it's shit) justifies to steal all their work and endanger their employees ? Plus, even if you think was they did was an irredeemable scam they still put in place the easiest refund process ever in videogame history, so everyone unhappy did not lose a single penny, only the emotional investement they might have put in the game before release (and I understand it can be very important).

What you are saying about hackers is purely delusional though, do I need to remind you than ones of the most prominent hackers targets are hospitals ? What is the grudge there, it's pure greediness. And they are making hundreds of thousands of dollars out of it, and it is not going to charity or does not improve consumer products believe me.

I don't know man, I just think gamers need to get their shit together. Always complaining about everything turning to mtx ridden GaaS, infinite sequels, boring universes, and it's not like there are a million other companies like CDPR attempting to make heavy narrative driven and expensive single player games in original settings, especially if you are not gaming on Playstation. Sure they overhyped, they flew too close to the sun, they were very shaddy with console players, but they have already been very badly hit for it and they'll do better. No need for wishing to burn them totally to the ground and rejoice of severe illegal attacks coming at them.

You people do realize a company is not just its upper management / shareholders.. its the hundreds of hard working employees who pour the heart and soul into a game who have no say in how a company is ultimately managed, upper management made a monumental fuck up to capitalize on $$$ no doubt against the wishes and advice of those beneath them so to wish them to fail or burn to the ground is idiotic, that's people livelihoods you're wanting to throw on the fire cause of greedy bastards at the top.

Take a wise ffs, shit ain't black and white.. They (upper management) have acknowledged they fucked up, they got their hand slapped going into the till and have promised not to do it again and make amends and we owe them the chance to do so.
