I played TLOU and there isn't much wokeness in that. Havent played TLOU 2.

But ND = bad now I get it
, you need a strong man in the protagonist role to feel like the game speaks to you I guess.
At least play the fucking game first..

You'll be very likely fed up with Druckmann too. And not just because of the strong woman.

And first TLOU was like my favorite game ever..

Oh God, so the ignorant children out there that don't like anything not starring a white male are all knowing. God I hate gamers more & more everyday

Well, then why the heck are you arguing if you haven’t played TLOU2 or at least watched it played?

TLOU 1 was a great game.

This is kind of a weird take, but I also haven't played TLOU2, because I felt like I just didn't need it after TLOU1.

The same holds true for rdr2. The end of RDR was so good that I simply was content with that being everything. I do admit to recently thinking about playing rdr2 though.

Regarding this thread. I continue to be baffled by people's reactions to anything perceived as woke. It's certainly OK to like to dislike something. I didn't like the forced 80s/90s retro in outerspace from the trailer, but I certainly didn't draw any hard conclusions from that trailer other than some Star Wars influence.

If I'm reaching, maybe she's too similar to the ps3 generation protagonists I.e.infamous/ME, but I also took some "punk" impressions from the trailer.

It certainly is disheartening to me that this is the hill that the neogaf community wants to die upon, with the point that it seems to be more important than games themself.

Lmao imagine disliking a trailer because you didnt like the main character in it.

Before knowing anything about how any of it plays.

Pathetic

Its all CG trailers too, which says nothing about the game.

Also not sure this is thread worthy but I dont want to thread whine
imagine not creating games the way majority of gamers want and this character design is clearly not liked by the majority of the people who are buying video games

poorly designed??? in what way? we haven't seen or don't know much about the game
Fair enough, but in my opinion, the multiplayer aspects of Elden Ring tend to be poorly designed overall.

But I guess you are right, there’s no detailed breakdown of mechanics and barely any story context yet. I need to work on not jumping to conclusions so quickly.

Take the main character out of that ND trailer and can you honestly tell me that was a good trailer? It was super generic and lame. Maybe it will be a great game. But that trailer was not good.

Also, I find it ironic that people who are crapping on those who dislike Intergalatic because of the protagonist are ignoring that the people crapping on the protagonist also want Amy Hennig, a female, back at Naughty Dog to replace Neil Druckmann. Peak irony.

For me the art and 80s vibe is incredible! Loved that.

But this trailer doesn’t exist in a vacuum folks. Neil is Neil and if you trust the guy not to let his politics dictate his decisions making this game you haven’t been paying attention to what’s been going on. It’s ALSO clear (and more importantly so) that Sony has been enjoying the perks of DEI investment strategies. You don’t get those perks for free.

I’m sure this game is more than a year away. I don’t have any problem with a strong female protagonist. I do have a problem with what that’s typically meant for games in terms of shallow writing and transparent terrible decisions in the last decade. If they can avoid that garbage then I am all in on this incredible looking game. If they can’t I’ll pass on it like Dragon Age and everything else written by shallow activist hacks.

Good news is…. Astro Bot won GOTY!

I mean for what they do to Joel? Its hard not to even be exposed to spoilers, considering how much the internet was freaking out about TLOU2.

Havent played it and havent watched anything about it yet I've heard things.

Wait... are you missing the entire point of a trailer?

If how a game played mattered to a fucking trailer we wouldnt be getting so many shit CGI nothingburgers.

The entire point was to sell people on the concept and character... if their failing at that then they are failing at a trailer.
That's the part the defence force is missing here, I fear. We've been here before, and recently. Naughty Dog burned bridges with some after TLOU2, sure, but there's a lot of PlayStation fans out there. More than enough to let a game succeed if it lands well. This was Naughty Dog's moment to show the world their next billion dollar franchise. To sell the idea, concept, world, and feel to gamers hungry to see what their PS5s can do. And, judging from its reception, it's kinda fallen flat. We're fresh off of Concord and Outlaws losing hundreds of millions and killing studios with damn similar concepts and stylings. This game is pretty darn close to both of those titles, and gamers by-and-large rejected both of those outright. That's not "hating on the Naughty GODS". That's "Naughty Dog decided to do what everyone else was doing" and now they're too deep to avoid landing in the aftermath of two of the biggest failures in the history of the industry. If the job of this trailer was to convey an identity to the world, then the identity it conveyed was one about half the population just straight up doesn't like. Take a look around - not just Naughty Dog's latest game, but all games, and movies, music, and TV. People are fucking tired of this card trick.

This is not a thing. At all. DEI initiatives don't apply to fictional characters, no one gets DEI investor money based on the content of a game, and Naughty Dog gets their budget from Sony directly. This is a made up thing and very stupid.

The fact people are pissed at a black woman as a main character in 2024 lmao!
I think the MC looks to be Southeast Asian, not black, but of course a)It’s the future and b)Who the heck knows.

I don’t think people are disliking the trailer because the MC is a woman of color. Folks are tired of the super liberal trend in last 5-6 years in gaming and usually the associated narrative. That narrative also has normally terrible writing and humor attached to it.

I think intergalactic win over more people once they show some gameplay.

People who are hoping it'll flop like Concord are in for a rude awakening.
It will 100% do okay. What I find interesting to think about is that it seems that there's a significant (even though social media amplified their message a ton so I may be misjudging here) fraction of ND fans that turned on them after TLOU p2 and just got a giant neon sign to double down in their position with this trailer. So, is this going to be such a big hit that it expands ND fanbase beyond their losses or is it going to sell less than previous games?

I find it funny how you make shit up. Someone points out the fallacy in your claim. You make up more shit.
Yes, because it's clearly inaccurate of me to point out that people who dislike certain types of things are going to more often like the same types of other things. The entire data set for this upvote downvote nonsense is completely useless other than for dudes that want to wank to downvotes.

After TLoU 2 is obvious why people are super concerned about anything shown by ND. And if the reveal show a stereotyped asian bald woman in space (Alien: Romulus have basically the same character lol) and a woman copy of Jena Plissken, yeah, I see why there's some concern.

There is nothing else about the MC that is off putting other than she is a woman? Nothing else giving ND leanings?
It's interesting that ND knows how much the fans were put off by or outright hated Abby and their solution (seemingly) for their next game is to double down on that type of caricature for another MC, i.e. cocky, girl boss, with attitude.

Also it's just becoming plain tiring to some people that nearly every Western game now features a strong women as the MC. You can can practically predict every new Western game will have that as the MC and be right 90% of the time.

You mean, like an entire thread devoted to downvote stats based on some obscure 3rd party extension used by probably less than .0001 percent of the entire Youtube userbase that we have no idea correlates in any way to real life data contained on Google's servers? Like, that kind of inaccurate?

I think the Naughty Dog hate is warranted. They obviously keep trying to push girl bosses, and make them borderline ugly to boot. Plus they haven’t shown anything in years, so expectations are high. They should have landed somewhere in the middle, not too attractive but not an eye sore either. You can’t tell me it’s not possible…

No . You’re naive.
Go look at the output of any development team that hires with DEI in mind. And what’s sweet baby inc for? Who hires them and why? Get your head out of your ass before you start throwing “stupid” around.

“Oh my god! I’ve hired only bakers for my restaurant for 4 years and now the menu is only bread and cake! What did I do wrong!?”

That was the first thing I thought about. I really liked the look and it fits well in scifi/cyberpunk world. I think the main character looks cool.

I wasn't a big fan of how the Star Wars Outlaws main character looked. I have seen some bringing that up for some reason. This character design is a lot better.

Intergalactic looks like its target market is rich american women with handbags worth more than your car. I couldn't tell you more about it than that.

Yeah, I would hate for them to make another game that wins every GOTY award and sells 10 million copies.
Pretty sure 10 millions is about half of what the first game sold tho. Also, TLoU 2 gameplay was goty, but the amount of criticism it got compared to the first one is insane, so is obvious that their fanbase is more critical about anything they'll do now.

Do you think the fact that neither of those games were very good had anything to do with their commercial disappointment rather than just character design?

Overwatch does just fine with its characters. Concord bombed because it was bland and redundant in the marketplace, with nothing special to offer. Outlaws was a mediocre game with C- reviews, and underperformed in the same way as the first Watch Dogs title for similar reasons. You are shoe-horning these into the grifter narrative about "woke character design."

Obviously some people do care about that kind of thing, but not enough to meaningfully hinder the commercial performance of other big Sony games like TLOU2, Horizon, and Spider-Man 2, all of which faces similar blowback from the griftosphere.
