First of all, let me preface this by saying I have nothing against indie games. Some of my best friends are black favorite games are indies such as Hollow Knight or Hades. With that said, to me, a Playstation showcase should be all about what can only be found and played on the Playstation. I can give a pass to world premier of AAA games that are multiplat but little titles such as Cat's Quest? Nobody buys a PS5 for those kinds of games, come on. I'm not saying it's bad but it can probably be played on a mobile device or on my 2008 PC that I use as a printer server.
Showcases of Xbox, Playstation, and Nintendo should be all about celebrating the platform and wowing us with games that these major companies have on offer. I sort of miss the olden days of E3 where the Playstation booth would have stuff like Shadow of the Colossus, Killzone 2, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, and other such games and the Xbox booth had Halo, Gears, Fable, and the others. You watched these and went "Wow, I need X or Y console". And if they had multiplats, they were also mind-blowing.
These days, I feel that all of these conferences are padded to hell with indie games. There are plenty of other occasions to show these off such as the Summer Game Fest, The Game Awards, the PC Games Show, and many others. As it stands, all of these showcases end up feeling similar. Playstation doesn't really feel tailored to Playstation owners. Same for Xbox. Nintendo is a bit different but I can't say the Direct has me excited. But I guess that with the number of exclusives dwindling for Sony and Microsoft, a show only advertising their games wouldn't be much of a show.
