The 'Tomb Raider' franchise has reached 95 million copies sold globally

Tomb Raider has cemented itself as one of the best-selling video game franchises in history. The total sales of all titles in the series about Lara Croft’s adventures are now approaching the 100 million mark.

As spotted by TweakTown, Amazon Games disclosed the data earlier this month after announcing that it will be publishing a new Tomb Raider game from Crystal Dynamics.

The franchise has sold more than 95 million units since the first title came out in 1996, according to a press release. This is seven million copies more than Embracer Group reported after acquiring Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal from Square Enix for €300 million.

Overall, the Tomb Raider franchise has 12 main games and multiple spin-offs. It is worth noting that the reboot trilogy — Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider — accounts for nearly half of total sales.

This makes Tomb Raider one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time, sitting between the likes of Monster Hunter (88 million units sold), Halo (81 million units sold), Resident Evil (130 million), and The Sims (175 million).

Tomb Raider still going strong with 95 million sold. I'm sure the next game along with continuing sales of other titles will help it easily cross 100 million.

Tomb Raider has always been mostly a consistent seller, even with some of the spin-offs so this isn't too surprising but very impressive. One reason for the successs is when things start going south or getting stale, the franchise reinvents itself which keeps it relevant.

I love Tomb Raider. One of my favorite franchises. Been there since day 1, when the OG rolled out in 1996. I was downright floored by the game. Lara was an awesome treasure hunter, killing dinosaurs and legendary creatures. I remember being particularly impressed by the isolated atmosphere, in which you traversed desolate tombs in search of your next relic, climbing to far reaching plateaus, only for Lara to fall down and break her neck. I had never played anything like it. Tomb Raider was a great journey, and still is, after all these years. An impressive feat, which speaks volumes about this franchise longevity.

I hope the 32bit versions get brought up to date and receive a re-release on modern hardware. TR1 imo is one of the best games ever made.

The tank controls are a bit awkward but after an hour or so of playtime you don't even notice.

I still remember playing the first one and that sense of isolation and exploration still sits with me, incredible game and I absolutely loved the reboot but felt it slipped somewhat with the next 2 even though I still completed them, great series and I'm looking forward to the next ones but man it'd be great if they could somehow capture the spirit of the first ones with the graphics of the reboots but would they sell? Hard to say, I sure as shit don't have the time to dedicate

Played the OG trilogy through and through, fantastic games.

The rework on the relaunch eh… turned into something it wasn’t. Not necessarily bad but not tomb raider either.

They need to hurry and bring the TR: Guardian of the Light to Switch... it’s perfect for it. Not sure what the hold up is at it was supposed to release this year.

It's nice to see the iterations and evolution of the franchise after all these years. I never liked the franchise until the new trilogy came out, always felt the original ones controlled too poorly to be enjoyable, even for the era.
They did a pretty good job translating the animation-based platforming of games like Prince of Persia or Flashback to 3D. The system also has surprising depth if you watch how speedrunners master it.

Not everybody likes that kind of system (I remember John Romero bashing it at the time). The alternative is what games like Mario and such went for: a less realistic but more gamey system with inertia, air control, etc.

I'd say both systems are vastly superior to what we have now most of the time: platforming on rails with coloured ledges.

Love the Tomb Raider series and I remember being about 13 getting home on a monday as I knew nobody would be home it would be my wank night. Dial up connection so would take a while but id love to wank off to dirty Tomb Raider porn, even printed a few pics off aswell.

It's nice to see the iterations and evolution of the franchise after all these years. I never liked the franchise until the new trilogy came out, always felt the original ones controlled too poorly to be enjoyable, even for the era.

The tank controls are part of the charm of the platforming in the game. I spent crazy amounts of time going in circles for hours in these games, only to realize I had not flipped that switch I needed to. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Love Tomb Raider, hopefully the new Lara won't be a boring wet blanket in the next game though. My money's on her being a body positive lesbian, or at least one of the two. Don't ask me why I would possibly think that, I'm clearly a psychic.

I couldn't really get into the latest one, (where you head towards and explore the caves of South America I think...) so I will look at Rise of Tomb Raider instead which is apparently the best one of the lot...might enjoy that better

You need to look at those games and their control scheme as how everything is based on squares basically. It makes everything much easier. An example, you click one step forward once and you run one "square". Everything works like that.
Since i'm not a an english native speaker (clearly) i can't really explain you what i mean by this though, lmao.

Maybe someone else gets me around here...

But every time someone says the controls suck i just don't get it. I finished Tomb Raider 2 at 12 years old and i was dumb as fuck. Everyone can do it...
