[UK] Nicola Bulley, missing woman in strange circumstances (Up: Body found, positive ID)

Nicola Jane Bulley (born 12 October 1977) is an English woman who was last seen and heard from on 27 January 2023 near St. Michael's on Wyre in Lancashire, United Kingdom. Based on the evidence found at the scene, and in the absence of any direct indication of third party involvement, the Lancashire Police's primary working hypothesis is that Bulley fell into the River Wyre and drowned; but despite a massive search effort which has included police divers, helicopters, sniffer dogs, and drones, no trace of Bulley has ever been found.

11 things to know (from close friend, approved by family)
  • Paul and Nikki both mostly work from home which is why he was at home that day. They have CCTV and there is a reason why Paul has never been a suspect.
  • They both do this walk regularly and Paul is very well known in the community and very well recognised
  • The dog never has her harness on for a chunk of that walk, it's removed at the gate of the top field and then put back on at the gate when they leave
  • They very rarely take the ball out for walks with willow now because she is very very protective over the ball and haven't done for a while
  • Nikki quite often would put her phone on loud speaker when talking
  • The dog was found very close to the bench and the harness. The harness was found on the floor not on the bench
  • Nikki is an incredibly strong swimmer
  • Nikki drove to the school and then left her car there and walked to the river
  • The dog was dry when found
  • The dog has since been back
  • There's CCTV at the back of the caravan park. The only camera that isn't working is the one that would have seen everything

Police have been working to the theory that Ms Bulley fell in the river, but her family and friends have questioned that.

The force believes the 45-year-old mortgage adviser went missing in just “a 10-minute window” while she was walking her dog, Willow, close to the River Wyre, after dropping off her daughters – aged six and nine – at school.

Ms Bulley had logged in to a Microsoft Teams call at 9.01am, which ended at 9.30am with her phone still connected to the call.

She was seen by another dog walker at 9.10am – the last known sighting – and police traced telephony records of her mobile phone as it remained on a bench overlooking the river at 9.20am. The device was found by a dog walker at around 9.35am, with Willow nearby.

In a Facebook post, Ms Bulley’s sister, Louise Cunningham, urged people to “keep an open mind” as there is “no evidence whatsoever” that the dog walker fell in the river.

“Off the back of the latest Police media update, please can I add there is no evidence whatsoever that she has gone into the river, it’s just a theory,” she said.

“Everyone needs to keep an open mind as not all CCTV and leads have been investigated fully, the police confirmed the case is far from over.”

Ms Bulley’s friend, Emma White, also cast doubt on the police theory, telling Sky News it was based on “limited information”.

Ms White said that police were working to get data off Ms Bulley’s Fitbit watch.

“The Fitbit had not been synced since Tuesday,” she said.

“The police are trying other ways to try to get information from it.”

The police search has been aided by specialists and divers from HM Coastguard, mountain rescue, and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service – with sniffer dogs, drones and police helicopters deployed.

Detectives are also working behind the scenes to analyse CCTV and dashcam videos, and members of the public with footage which could be useful have been urged to come forward.

Five things baffling a forensic expert
According to the forensic expert, the mobile phone left on the bench is “the only thing the police have to go on”.

The phone was discovered on a bench still logged on to a work Microsoft Teams call with the camera and microphone both switched off.

However, Mr Faulding has suggested the phone could have been left there as a decoy by a third party.

“If Nicola is not in that stretch of river today my view is that there could be a third party and that [the phone] was a decoy placed by the river,” he told Good Morning Britain on Tuesday.

“The phone on the bench, I mean, you have to ask, normally someone would have a phone in their hand especially if they were walking around,” he told BBC Breakfast.

Behaviour of Nicola’s dog

Police still believe that Ms Bulley fell into the river, although her loved ones have disputed this suggestion due to a lack of evidence.

She was walking her spaniel Willow at the time she vanished but the dog was found “bone dry”, suggesting it had not entered the river either before or after its owner vanished.

“We dealt with a drowning a couple of years ago where a gentleman went into a river and Ripley, his dog, was screaming by the riverbank when we got there,” Mr Faudling told GB News.

“When we arrived it was howling, and literally pointing exactly where he was. He stayed with his owner.”

‘No screams were heard’

Mr Faulding also flagged that it “feels odd” that there were no screams heard at the scene, despite police having spoken to a number of witnesses.

There were also no marks left at the scene which could have given clues about what happened.

Scene not closed off to public

A scene of this nature would normally be sealed off to retain any clues that could unravel the disappearance, Mr Faulding said.

However, the area remained open to the public which may have resulted in the loss of key evidence, he claims.

The forensics expert said: “People have been walking past the bench. There’s no police tape up. This would normally be sealed off as a crime scene so potentially crime scene investigators can go in and see if there are any microfibres, evidence, slip marks down the bank etc and I don’t believe that has actually happened here.”

No body found in river - despite extensive search

The downstream and upstream river have been searched thoroughly by police divers on multiple occasions but they still have not found anything, leaving the forensic team “baffled”.

Mr Faulding told BBC Breakfast: “These are very professional divers and they didn’t find anything and that is the odd thing about this. That is what I can’t get my head around. It is very strange.”

“Normally when we deal with drowning victims they go to the bottom and they will stay there for a while,” he said. “The police divers have done a thorough search of that river twice and nothing was found. This is one of the most odd cases I’ve ever worked on.

“If anything is there, we will find it. A body will move after a time, but they searched that area and came up with nothing – that is what is weird here. We are baffled.”

When asked about whether Ms Bulley’s body could be in a different part of the river, Mr Faulding said: “Unless someone’s put her in a different part of the river somewhere or she’s fallen in somewhere.... It is a very short stretch.

“On a normal river we can scan ten miles a day for a body and locate it very quickly.”

It's really bizarre, I've only really caught the headlines until yesterday when I sat down and properly read.

The phone in perfect condition, no struggle marks and cctv camera are massive flags to me. That window is so small as well though to go missing in

This is quite interesting. As much as I’d like to think something else happened, she most likely did indeed drown. Often times family members and loved ones will paint a different picture because they want to believe she is still alive somewhere, somehow…but unfortunately the police are probably right on this one. Please continue to post updates on this thread, would like to follow.

The river seems almost impossible to drown in form what I read. Unless she somehow bumped her head before falling in? They searched that whole river up and down and nothing. Also she’s apparently a great swimmer.

One thing I've also noticed is the river itself, look at the bends, it would take a miracle for a body to navigate those bends and go out to sea..

Looking at it all, she was either taken by force or doesnt want to be found.

The fact the phone was still connected to the teams call means she vanished from the time it started and finished but why was the mic muted if it was a meeting? :s

How protective is the dog? If someone grabbed her and the dog was protective I'd like to think it would protect but if it's docile with people then it might not.

Very strange overall though but personally I'm pointing more towards she was grabbed while sat on that bench and told if she made noise they'd kill her etc.

Paid almost no attention to this at first but seems very odd it's gone on this long without a body found. Something is off. Most likely someone planned this very carefully and abducted her. Not sure it will be solved now.

90% of teams meetings are bullshit and it's etiquette to keep yourself muted while the lead is talking. You can use raise hand or just unmute if you wanna come in.

I personally find it strange how much attention this getting, I do hope she is found though.

A gentleman went missing in Newark/Nottinghamshire and there was nearly non existent coverage in comparison.

Places are only just starting to cover it as criticizing the police here, as it's got no attention at all prior and asking why this is getting loads of attention and he isn't.

The coverage is due to how strange some of the anomalies are. Especially the CCTV.

But wouldn't they have footage for pretty much everywhere surrounding the park minus that one exit? But surely they can piece together footage leading to the park.

And be able to see everyone that entered the park or not?

It feels like when you watch these murder documentaries online they can literally trace every footstep off someone, it's crazy.

Anyway I really hope she is still alive, but I'm sadly doubtful.

I honestly thought she would've been found by now.

This is the weirdest part of all. It creates a situation where you wonder if whoever was responsible (even if it was just herself bailing on the family) was somehow aware of this information.

It's all too convenient. Given that she is a good swimmer and the body is unlikely to have escaped the river I don't think she drowned.

My question is who would have any insight or access to that information that this one area was off-camera.

Ok, so there was a sophisticated effort by one or more individuals to make her disappear without a trace. Shit like this is not coincidental.

Or even something like a heart attack or seizure and she fell in. Very very strange regardless. I still hope she’s found safe somewhere though.

Insurance scam? Or maybe they want fame?
Can't have your phone on you or you'll be tracked, and you can't bring your dog, so leave them by the bench, and disappear where the CCTV isn't working. Make sure to greet people on your walk so they will serve as a witness to have seen you before you "mysteriously disappear".
Or they will find her in the water, who knows.

my two cents on this … I think she took her work call and lost sight of her dog.

Thinking he went into the lake / river she goes in looking for him and gets swept away

Or her partner killed her and faked being on the work call

This is a very odd case, Could have been abducted by Aliens, Could have disappeared by way of Sergei (darkweb rentakill) or she might have made herself disappear for an insurance payout to split with her husband 🤷‍♂️

Feel sorry for her family and doggy.

I mute my mic when I’m not talking as to not have noise going on while someone else is talking. This is a normal behavior on virtual meetings.

It’s common for parks to have cameras out. The last footage recorded on the NVR would tell you how the camera went defunct. But if someone knew this camera was down it would be someone familiar with the camera system. So someone in security or someone who typically views the camera. Not many people would know it’s out. I work in security.

I figured that the police were probably right, but the lack of a body showing up yet does seem rather odd. Something about the boyfriend makes me a touch suspicious, but I'm probably completely wrong.

Same. That's pretty normal.

Occam's Razor...

Exactly.

The most likely outcome is a freak set of circumstances where she went into the water for whatever reason (to retrieve the dog's ball, perhaps) got into difficulty, and died. Her body is likely to pop up (literally) at some point in the very near future.

The police can and should be criticised for not establishing a proper scene guard on the location... but I very much doubt they've got it all that wrong on what happened to her.

Also she’s apparently a great swimmer.

Doesn't really matter. Being a great swimmer gives you a good chance of surviving compared to a non-swimmer or even weak swimmer. But if there's any kind of impairment, then almost any benefit from being a good swimmer is negated.

If abducted, the abductor got her at the exact right time/place. Either incredible timing, or pre-planned to perfection.

Chase there showing his complete lack of knowledge about British Northerners. While Mark was being a bit jokey and stereotypical there, that really is how many people in the North of the UK are. Life's hard and bad things can happen; you just have to keep going. Maybe some thing better will happen, but that there's no point in hoping for it.

Insurance doesn't pay out for a missing person until they've been gone 7 years, among other criteria. I doubt it.

Nicola Bulley update: Two 'suspicious' men caught on CCTV as police take new line

Partner Paul Ansell, 44, revealed his own fears that a local is keeping secret on what happened to her.

Lancashire police force are reportedly searching for two men that were spotted acting suspiciously close to where Nicola Bulley went missing. A witness is said to have come forward after spotting the pair outside the local church in St Michael’s on Wyre, Lancashire, on the day before Nicola went missing.

That same witness allegedly told police that he saw one of the men in the vicinity of her usual route on the morning she vanished. The report adds that officers have since taken CCTV footage from a garage in St Michael’s on Wyre covering the 24 hours before the last sighting of Nicola

Bet this will turn out to be nothing. A couple of guys standing around chatting is suspicious to some people, especially if they don't look like locals.

Quite a significant Police press conference today. CCTV questions broken down with details and a number of other thin possibilities written off.

They are now saying that she had "struggles with the menopause" and "Nicola suffered significant issues with alcohol" and that "Nicolas vulnerabilities made her high risk"

I'm not too familiar with the case beyond the basics. Has there been anything to indicate that?

99% of cases like this, it's the partner, body language experts who did analysis of his video interviews say he's shady.

But all that is irrelevant, just opinion, and the most likely outcome in these types of cases

How far away is that from where she went missing? Genuinely surprised it took them so long to find her tbh with how their is literally cameras everywhere.

Whilst it's not a happy ending, it's a little bit of closure.

I assume they have traced her partner's steps? As sadly it's usually a loved one in these situations :/

Someone familiar to her, not necessarily the spouse. Or maybe she was intoxicated, and simply drowned (if the recovery is her).
