No, this is simply not true.

We ALL have endured plenty of crap online. This is how the world works, either for right or wrong. Even on games with good mood like Rocket League you have to put up with the usual "noob" accusations from trolls and much worse stuff.

I don't give a pass to these rat kids who act like this but making conspiracy and victimization theories out of this is not only out of proportion but wickedly manipulative and ill-intended.

If we had to bring to public attention every time a guy is harrassed over online gaming or the likes, we could fill up a 24/7 news channel and still would not cover half of it.
Of course it happens more often with men as men play online games than Women.

If you can’t see the difference between how men versus women are treated online, then you are blind.

The logic is undeniable. Anyone that questions a culture that supports bad behavior must have ulterior motives. No need to make coherent arguments when you can use dumb insults like "white knight"

The only arguments you have brought forth are weak as hell personal anecdotes and continued strawmen arguments. Bring forth actual examples if you want to be taken seriously.

I dont call myself a gamer because while it is true (ie a human that plays games) its not something that defines me as a human. I mean I don't go around calling myself a breather either.

It's a fucking game. I'm a gamer. There, I said it.

It doesn't define my existence. It loosely describes a hobby of mine.

According to the Pew Research Center, in a 2015 survey, 33% of young men identified as “gamers”, while only 9% of young women felt comfortable with the label. Yet the same survey found that there wasn’t a huge difference between the overall number of men and women who actually play games – 50% and 48% respectively. Why are women almost four times as hesitant to embrace the label for what they enjoy doing?
I don't believe this is an accurate picture. I don't consider mobile phone game players on equal footing to those who play on dedicated gaming devices.

Perhaps there are 4 times less women who play "video games" that identify as gamers because there are 4 times less women who play core games that the actual gaming community care about?

with pretty rough online chatter to all parties, with women being berated even more than average.

"And 92% of the people knows that" right? Give me an statistic study that demonstrates that.

No, I havent been harassed every game I played, and most of the times I play multiplayer games nobody is harassing nobody. I would even say I found more friendly people than idiots playing online.

Yes, indeed, when an idiot starts harassing a girl they will use common misogynistic insults an behaviour, like when some idiot tries to bully a guy they will overuse the usual "fag, virgin, i fcked your mother/sister". So what? It's a random idiot on internet. Mute+block and bye bye.

You know what's the problem? Attentionwhores. Girls that are being bullied and instead of doing what common sense dictates they decide to become snowflakes and cry out loud on internet how bad men are and how badly they are being bullied because they are women. Cut the crap, nobody is special, everybody gets bullied by some idiot. Mute+block+report and forget about them.

Yeah these statistics are fucking retarded.
My parents play games on their phones, almost everyone does, most people aren't going to consider themselves "gamers" because of it.

I'd like to know what the distribution of male vs female is on PC for example.

What is even the point of being called a "gamer" and so important about it? I mean, unless it is your profession or something - to play games everyday - I don't see the point. Like people said before, it's a hobby, most people barely care if you "identify" yourself as a gamer or not.

If someone actually asks me "Hey man, are you a GAMER?" my response in two very simple lines:
1st:
2nd:
"I do play games though"

No, the problem are the dudes dropping all the insults of against everyone diminishing the enjoyment for everyone.

And sometimes mute block doesn’t work for more team oriented games.

You all are focusing on the wrong thing here.

In neither case are those insults targeting or making fun of straight white males, which is the point. They are the privileged, untrollable demographic. All other demographics, and the slurs for them, are fair game for harassment and insulting those you don't like. And then straight white men wonder in shock why the extreme SJW crowd turned "straight white male" into a slur of sorts.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/291034/cyber-bullying-share-of-us-students-by-type-and-gender/

With Cyber bullying gender doesn't have much impact. Why should it be so different for bullying in gaming?

The "straight with male" is just scapegoating.

"Process in which the mechanisms of projection or displacement are utilized in focusing feelings of aggression, hostility, frustration, etc., upon another individual or group; the amount of blame being unwarranted." Scapegoating is a hostile tactic often employed to characterize an entire group of individuals according to the unethical or immoral conduct of a small number of individuals belonging to that group. Scapegoating relates to guilt by association and stereotyping."

Not defeatism. Realism. The world isn't built to coddle you and protect you from things you find offensive. Take the punches, get a thicker skin, and toss some back.

When all console manufacturers see it fit to take significant amounts of money for the privilege to play online it's OK to ask to implement automatic monitoring of voice chats with up-to-date voice recognition software and take respnsibility for the bullying in the space they provide.
I really don't see why anybody has to put up with toxic assholes.

Probably because these man hating feminists see that there is a social sphere that women do not dominate in that generates money and has some kind of societal impact.

Where money and influence is involved, that's where you'll see them screeching. They didn't exist back in the days when everybody thought "gaming and comics are for immature adults and kids".

Dude, don't get your panties in a wad, you know good damn well its dudes doing the vast majority of if the insults making online gaming a less than hospitable place for everyone. You are being intellectually dishonest and moreover you are obviously immature. You let me know when it becomes a widespread problem when groups of women all in the lobby gang up on the lone dude saying terrible things.

The real fix here is not to focus on what the original article discusses. Its how to curtail this stuff in the first place to begin with to make it a better place for everyone playing. This shouldn't be controversial, yet, here we are. Some folks defending bullies.

This logic doesn't make sense since mostly boys/men are playing with mics. But when girl are online with mics they do the same stuff as well. I don't know why you're acting like only males act crazy online.

It's so common that people sometimes only deal with a party they play a game with and no one else.

There are more guys playing multiplayer games with voice chat, therefore, there are more idiot guys playing multiplayer games. That doesn't mean there aren't idiot girls playing multiplayer games. There's no trouble with girls in multiplayer games, there are idiots that will pick any victim to have fun and you can behave like an adult and mute+block or you can act like a spoiled brat and write articles/upload youtube crying and bitching about that random idiot that called you names.

I don't have a problem with minorities getting representation in video games. More power to them. What makes me cringe, is this need the creators have to depict women not as equal to men, but as superior. No Bullshit made a very well-done video on You Tube about the Captain Marvel movie and the sexism which is obvious. But a different kind of sexism - a sexism that seeks to portray men as weak and women as powerful. The shot where Danvers gets up while all the men sit down - in a way to show her superiority as a woman since there is only one female which is standing and all others are sitting males is so IN-YOUR-FACE that makes me roll my eyes.

The comic isn't far behind - right now Captain Marvel is leading an all-women 'rebellion' against a sexist super villain who constantly talks and looks down on women, with the writers' intention of making him look like a complete asshole. He even at one point uses a turbine which looks like it's coming out of his ass to escape the ladies.

Can you imagine the opposite in this day and age? Someone making a comic book about male superiority while making fun of women? He'd be butchered online for everyone to see.

And that bullshit is on Disney - mostly. I've seen the Wonder Woman film, and while a Girl Power movie through and through, at no point did it gave me the impression it has the intent to make men look like assholes. It treats both sexes with utmost respect, despite being an Action Girl movie. Captain Marvel (both the film and the comic) reeks of feminism agenda, and that's what makes it bullshit to me.

They make women look like they have a massive inferiority complex and that's bothering me.

What exactly, are you proposing? People have the right to be assholes. If you don't like someone, avoid them. That's how you do it in real life and that's how you do it in games by blocking them. In games you meet a lot of people of different ages, cultures, classes, backgrounds. People with mental illnesses. People you would never be willing or able to interact with in real life. It's the price of true diversity. If you can't deal with that and blocking is too inconvenient for you, play with friends.

I remember my first LAN party. It was 4 or 5 dudes we all playing Quake 2 trading bootlegs of The Matrix etc. tbh I was shocked at the trash talking but honestly if you play any sports you hear the same stuff. It’s the nature of competitive gaming.

As far as women in games, they are already there, they are like half the player base. Personally I’ve never had anyone make fun of me because I played games and still don’t. Most of the people posting videos of games on my insta are women. One of my friends is a died in the wool feminist and she loves playing games as well. We played through the original TLOZ and she knew all the secrets.

Of course I’m out of school so I’d probably have a different opinion if I was still in high school or whatever. But everyone gets picked on in high school (me for my height & acne) cos kids are more often then not pieces of shit

. Luckily it gets better when you leave school. Pieces of shit are still out there but you no longer have to spend 6 hours a day w them if you don’t want

Yes, this should be the aim and then, by proxy women being attacked/harassed benefit automatically. However, you need to read this:

People pick up on anything. A lisp, a 'hillbilly' accent, an effeminate voice. You see most of us went through this - it's a rite of passage for online play. A lot of people - even here on gaf - have just shrugged it off and no longer play those games. I don't play CoD since WaW because of the amount of racist and gay insults down the mic. Also because I suck and got told it many times with different expletives :) I (and many others) haven't gone on a crusade to make everyone nice and friendly. There are tons of games to play with more wholesome communities. Some communities are built around elitism and having an 'edge', because that group of people thrive on those things to elevate and motivate their playing.

Also, you need to reappraise your position on women in general. Back in the day on MSN Gaming Zone some were infamous, then there were other places like iSketch and neopets, that's not even counting games like BF4, Warframe and WoW. If you think women are not capable of being assholes then you haven't played with a wide enough pool. I've known girls target someone, get in a private chat then get an ip and DDOS them off PSN. Guys were gullible and thirsty.

Enjoy being a Monster Truck. If its Grave Digger, Ill give you my number. (Yes, Im joking around).

They are idiots, but what you are proposing does not stop the idiots, just limits the idiots ability to reach the user. Plus, this isn't an option for team based play.

Im all for a company doing what they can to ban members for insulting anyone while playing the game. If a company wants to let it go and be a free for all, so be it.

I know this is not aimed at me, but..

Yes, they do. But they do not have a right to be assholes while using the private servers of a company who is hosting a game. Companies are already starting to crack down on this type of stuff (like the racial slurs). I can specifically think of Rainbow 6 doing this. You do not have a right to be an asshole in a private server. Its more like being an asshole in a bar. The bar can kick you out for being an asshole.

C'mon man, drop that shit. It looks childish.

It looks childish because it is. Its a reflection on how much pearl clutching is going on on this thread that somehow their online experience will be ruined if companies take a more aggressive approach on trash talking in their games.

Your post is terrible. You think that online gaming is some rite of passage. It isn't. They are games and more importantly, products. I would argue that companies are the ones that should police their own serves on what they want to allow and what they wont. Sorry you don't play WOW (I never have). This was a lost subscription to Blizzard. IF a company wants to crack down on it. So be it. Its a good thing that will make the hobby bigger.

Plus, this isn't an option for team based play.
Your option for team based games is to just leave the game and queue again.
Another option is to not queue up with randoms, look for a community/clan/guild instead and play with likeminded people.
Play on servers with active admins - only an option for games that feature dedicated servers and a server browser.

No one is forcing you to stick around when you feel like you're playing with assholes. You are in full control of your own gaming experience.

Companies have always done something against people that behave like assholes... but it is fighting windmills. For any asshole that gets banned, a new one will pop up and banning someone on console won't do much anyways, unless the whole console gets banned from PSN/XBL.

The only way to fight this properly is by ignoring said people. Blocking, muting or leaving a game as a last resort.

Limiting the idiots ability to reach users to bully is literally stopping them.

And yes, it's an option for team based play because
1) You won't be playing well with a Kid/idiot Ranting nonstop on the voice chat so why bother hearing them
2)You won't play again with those idiots making the chances of having nice teams higher

Still a Win/Win situation the Mute+Block option. What's your idea? "Reeducating males so they don't bully???". Again it's not a "males vs females" situation. They don't give a fuck about sex, race, sexuality or wathever, bullies want one single thing: ATTENTION. And they get that attention when they manage to trigger somebody into answering them. Mute and block them and they won't get the attention they want, they will get bored and leave with the tail between the legs. Congratulations, an ancient system called "mute+block" solved the issue.

People who play games play games. I've never met any sane, tolerable person, regardless of sociopolitical views, who take the "gamer" label and reputation seriously. I keep mentioning this over and over, but this seems to be part of a bigger picture, where some people are possibly ashamed and insecure that their favorite hobby isn't taken as seriously as other forms of entertainment and creative expression.

I never claimed that to be a good solution.

The best way to fight this is and will always be a dedicated server found through a proper server browser and active admins on said server, stuff that was the standard 15 years ago. Sadly consoles made PC gaming worse, because the shit match making is now a standard there as well. We already gave companies full control over everything by letting them manage server rules and leaving no person in charge in an active game. It's heaven for griefers and that won't change without giving control back to gamers (e.g. server admins).

Mute+Block+Report and leaving a game are the only options we have left. They're not great, but still... no one has you at gunpoint, forcing you to play with assholes. You are still in control of your own experience.

No, its not stopping the idiots. Stopping the idiots is stopping their ability to continue to harass users (not just the ones who have to suffer some bullshit, then block them). IE ban them.

I didn't say it was overall a male v. female issue (though they do get more than their fair share). Its an online toxicity issue. In other words, you have to ban the players for using such language. Not allow them to spew their nonsense in the first place. That is literally stopping them. To actually curtail behavior you have to address the source, not the symptom.

I don't think I agree with the "those whiny babies have thin skin" point of view. I'm glad the few shooters I have played regularly like Battlefield don't have open voice chat. I like how text is more in use on PC because you have to go out of your way to read it. The one single time in a pub server that someone talked to me in Battlefield 4 it was some asshole screaming because we were losing in a video game. Fuck that.

Stop being a whiny baby, get a thick skin.

If someone can’t take heat online, they shouldn’t go to spaces where they’re gonna inevitably get heat.

People avoid shark-infested water because it’s easier for them to just stay out of the water than it is to convince the sharks that eating people is morally wrong.

Similarly, it’s easier to just mute or log off rather than convince the entirety of the internet to never ever say mean words. That’s ridiculous.

I value people’s freedom to talk shit online more than I care about the feelings of people who probably shouldn’t be on the internet in the first place.

We aren't talking about just the user. We are talking about how to address this on a much broader scale.

You know exactly what I mean. Either you are for companies taking more active steps like banning to curtail this nonsense, or you are aren't. If you aren't, then why? (And its not a public place....its a private online game more like a bar).
