A user has released a trailer for an upcoming Half-Life 2 mod that will see the beloved FPS be turned into something that's been inspired by the modern iterations of Doom. Given that Valve has recently registered a software trademark, many fans will be hoping that a third installment in the long dormant Half-Life series will finally be on the horizon. However, others will be more pessimistic, and any hope of anything close to a new entry in the influential franchise is being left up to the modding community for now.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, though. While many consider the vanilla experiences fantastic, with The Orange Box recently celebrating 15 years, what keeps the Half-Life games in the limelight is not only their legendary status, but also the sheer number of mods that have come about over the years. The community is teeming with individuals and independent studios dedicated to keeping the FPS titles alive, and sometimes that means fully converting them into a different beast all together.

modder Velocity Punch is currently developing a mod for Half-Life 2 that takes inspiration from the likes of Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal. A recent trailer shows off some aspects of the current pre-alpha build. With a hellish intro and some fast-paced action, combined with the crunchy guitar tone of Korn's "Here to Stay," it's definitely taking cues from the modern take on id Software's iconic shooter. The story for "Half-Life: Reamped" will take place several years after the Black Mesa incident that occurred in the first game, with players taking on all manner of fiendish beings.

The video also has a hint of Quake 3 Arena, which is considered one of the greatest arena shooters ever made. While Half-Life 2 is not without its action, it doesn't have the chaotic violence that some old school FPS titles were known for, and the demonic theme that's shown off in the trailer really shines a different light on Valve's 2004 classic. Currently, there is no release date for "Reamped," but it's definitely looking interesting so far.

Yeah something about that didn't work. Like it should have just been Half Life 1 but with Doom style gameplay (movement, keycards, exploration etc.) or, if it was to lean more Doom, make the "Hellish" stuff actual Xen stuff.

It just looks like it took the wrong middle ground.
