VGTech: Sniper Elite 5 PS5 and Xbox Series X|S Frame Rate Test

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

PS5 uses a dynamic resolution with the highest resolution found being 3840x2160 and the lowest resolution found being 2304x1296. Pixel counts at 3840x2160 seem to be rare on PS5.

Xbox Series X uses a dynamic resolution with the highest resolution found being 3840x2160 and the lowest resolution found being 2304x1296. Pixel counts at 3840x2160 seem to be uncommon on Xbox Series X.

In some scenes the Xbox Series X was found to have a resolution advantage compared to the PS5. As an example, at one point during the first mission PS5 rendered at 2688x1512 and Xbox Series X rendered the same scene at 3072x1728. Another example is the beginning of mission 2 where PS5 rendered at 2688x1512 and Xbox Series X rendered this scene at 2880x1620. There can also be scenes where both consoles render at the same resolution such as the beginning of mission 4 where both consoles render at 3264x1836.

Xbox Series S uses a dynamic resolution with the highest resolution found being 2560x1440 and the lowest resolution found being 1536x864. Pixel counts at or near 2560x1440 seem to be very rare on Xbox Series S.

Cutscenes are letterboxed which results in a lower effective resolution during these scenes.

PS5 appears to be using silhouette tessellation which wasn't seen on the Xbox Series consoles https://bit.ly/3xDXjuZ More information on this technique can be found here: https://bit.ly/3mCldAY

I haven't watched the video, but looking at the stats is there another set of rows that differentiates the performance of game frames vs video frames? Obviously with large storage and h.265 decoding on all boxes the video frames could all be at neflix 4K UHD standard rather than in-engine rendered, as was the case with Devil May Cry (3?) and MGS4 on PS3 IIRC.

If games typically have a play time around 9hrs, this stat quantity represent less 3% of the frames, so without being randomly sampled throughout a game's long play video, we can't even say if these analysed frames are statistically representative of the entire games they use this method on.

Imo they are definitely statically more representative than the other counterparts tech channels.

Dude go to check what was the lower resolution found by them on Series X in this game. Almost regularly they stay higher on Series X and lower on ps5, compared the other channel. Just look to Metro Exoddus compared VGTech.

Yes you're describing dynamic resolution scaling pretty accurately right there. The keyword being dynamic.

DF said lowest on PS5 is 1440p, while VGT found 1296p. Does this mean that DF is on Sony's payroll? That's usually the logic around here.
Uh they said 1440p at lower on Series X and 1296p on ps5. The logic around the net is NXGamer is an avid Sony fanboy when he says something in favour of ps5 where DF sometimes just commits innocent mistake in favour of the xbox platform.

And where exactly are you seeing a fault ? They take a number of screenshots from the segments that they look at and count them. Thats the results from their samples. Its never claimed as an absolute. Its a dynamic resolution and a 12 hour game. Its certainly possible to get different results from different samples. It doesnt mean anything

They are even paid more than VGTech for such stuff but it's normal to you see them less competent to a passionate less famous channel because they are "humans". You know there are tools about it, maybe it's time to use it more properly or update their method, indeed to waste their time of hours of useless weekly videos podcast about likeable chats between them as Hollywood PR parties. IMO.

They're not less competent, jesus. Its just the results from their samples. They cant play every game start to finish, take samples throughout then count 100 pictures. You would get two videos per month and long after the game is relevant.

The discrepancy is margin of error stuff. Stop seeing conspiracies and ill will where there's none.

So we can't say now DF is become a less competent channel and more lazy lately basing of their face off which are released even more sporadicly, with more errors and approximations?

still find it funny that DF did not notice or mention the tessellation at all. It really is missing the wood for the trees because we are invested too much in numbers they themselves sometimes say aren't important.

Ps5 needs teasellation to act as lod where as Xbox is always at 100%!

(I didn’t actually watch the video but I want to play to 😂)
You're probably joking but look at the guys elbow.

Tessellation PS5:

No tessellation XSX:

I find more funny how almost regularly such mistake are in favour of the xbox but who see it, it's just a "conspirancy" fool. No one said said they are paid to MS. But they are clearly blinded to their favouritism. Just John is graced to his Sony "fanboyism".

Sure, say it. But what are the other errors lately ? Surely not that other clown's "character tesselation", lol ? And again, this resolution difference is margin of error stuff, its not competence or lack of it. Its the variables from having a dynamic res in an entire game. If they'd have said its 1080p very often on ps5, then you would have something here, but not this

And again why their margin of error leaning always in the same direction? If you look to their previouses analyses, you can see it. Maybe they should update their method and not just follow their "impressions" which aren't exactly objectives.

.... PS5 has silhoutte tessellation...
FYI It isn't silhouette tessellation, just tessellation, and it will be subdividing the face-on polygons too - so maybe double or more polygons on the models when used, it is just that it is only really easy to notice on silhouette edges because the added polygons are easiest seen smoothing the model's outline compared to a more facetted representation.

All polygons use per fragment/pixel shading so the screen space lighting with normal maps or bump maps make the non-tessellated face-on polygons appear very similar to the tessellated ones because of the way screen space lighting works at such angles.

I hope you're not referring to me. There is no evidence that it is tessellation. VGTech and NXGamer say it is. It may just be a lower poly model they use across xbox consoles or maybe even something else like more aggressive LOD.

That's not the point. The point is it's a bad look that they missed something so obvious because they are so indoctrinated to a certain thing thats actually less visible, counting pixels.
I'm not even saying it's from malice but I've got to somewhat agree with assurdum here, it is a little suspect if nothing else that DF were blind to this.

It's visible on the main character and on sniped characters which would be 95% of all the footage they're comparing and as a pixel counter you're actively looking for edges to pixel count to begin with. How do you not notice that when comparing footage?
They are always very keen eyed too especially with regard to other less apparent/visible things like VRS. But they missed this when they don't even need a 800x zoom. Incompetence or malice they should have spotted it easily. in like for like cutscenes you can easily compare something like that.

No, no, i was thinking of nxgamer. The actual truth is that we dont know what's going on with this. If it's a bug on xbox or something else. The video for this game was made by the new guy from DF, no ? Recent hire ? Best to keep a closer eye on him then, if mistakes mount up as he progresses. For example when Tom makes a video, i skip it by default, because he's always surface level and uninteresting

I think when they seen a major fluctuation in the fps on ps5 with the xray views, it was immediately obvious something "different" should be on the ps5 version. But for them is always about the Series X bruting force the ps5 hardware when such stuff happens; it's clear what is it the regular gap between the 2 hardware as today, why not investigate better when unordinary results happen.

That's not the point. The point is they often (almost always) miss the lowest resolution on XSX. We also learn that resolution is often the same in some scenes. Finally the fact that they never talked about the tesselation advantage on PS5 (that are probably explaining the drops in cutscenes on PS5).

Overall they always tend to paint a better picture on XSX by omitting details, by being selective when looking at resolutions, oddly almost always favoring Xbox.. By now it's a trend as they do the same thing in almost all comparisons.

Anyone play this on PS5 that can commwnt on the dualsense usage?
DualSense is used very well.

The triggers are used for shoulder aiming in the perfect way. Half presses feel a slight resistance half way when you aim, then a little more pressure to fully ADS. Firing your weapon also has some trigger resistance and it varies for different weapons.

The haptics are also done well, with explosions and effects making great use of the haptics in various situations. Giant cannons in the distance (or up close) will rumble with the shockwaves. After firing a weapon there's the slightest haptic feedback from recoil.

Should also note that the loading in this game is lightning fast.

I think they are mostly incompetent. They wear the "both sides accuse us" tag with honor but it's more damning imo. John is the only one there worth anything.
