VU Games bringing Robots to consoles, PCs

Adaptation of Fox's upcoming CG animated adventure will debut alongside the film in 2005.

Vivendi Universal Games announced today the development of a multi-platform game based on the upcoming CG animated film Robots (pictured) from Twentieth Century Fox. The game is being developed by UK-based Eurocom Entertainment Software for the Xbox, PS2, and PC. The game’s launch is expected to coincide with the film’s release in early 2005.

The 3D action/adventure game will place the player in the role of the film’s hero Rodney Copperbottom as he attempts to save his mechanical world from an evil tyrant. Apparently, developers are using assets from the film production to translate the movie world to the game world. In a press release, Vivendi boasts the Robots game will be an “experience for Robots fans of all ages,” so expect plenty of puzzle-solving and non-violent gameplay, with a probable “E” rating from the ESRB.

The film itself will feature a slew of big-name celebrity voices, including Halle Berry and Mel Brooks. No word yet on whether the actors will make an appearance in the game, but stay tuned to GameSpot for more information as the game continues development.

I just got back from a VU press event, here in NYC, and the game looks pretty good even at it's very early stages. The souce material is sound and Blue Sky (makers of the movie) is working closely with the developers, Eurocom by contributing a ton of assets. I spoke with the game's producer at lenght and even said that Fox movies execs, upon seeing the game, were blown away (though do you really see games that often? maybe they're only familiar with Super Mario Bros?).

EDIT: One interesting tidbit is that Fox is apparently going to spend more money on marketing Robots than any other film in their history. Even Star Wars!
