No, they would not, nor would they get any other AAA titles that ms has. Your in serious denial. What, you want ms to give buyers no exclusives? I bet you think starfield and doom are coming out on ps5 too.
I never said anything about Starfield or Doom.

What I'm trying to understand is why you think Microsoft would have no problem putting Minecraft on a competing console (PS4/PS5) but would have a problem putting it on a competing handheld.

Do you think if an Xbox handheld came out then Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons would be pulled from the eShop and store shelves?

Obviously they are discussing this. XCloud is a reality and will improve over time. All these streaming services in a way will compete with Nintendo in the portable space. Activision acquisition will add even more value to XCloud.

Xcloud and Gamepass would already be on Switch if Nintendo gave a fuck.

They still have bothered adding a Web Browser.

Do you mean hybrid? Because traditional handheld systems are outdated nowadays

Yes it woukd be a hybrid. But they still wouldn't bring exclusives to other
hybrids if they launched one themselves, it would help drive sales.

Who knows, seems less likely as they have already invested a lot in it. But if there was a minecraft 2, they would keep it to themselves.
Also your reply definately implied that key franchises would still hit everything. Minecraft is more the exception than the rule.

I bet there are talks on these subjects:
  • Should we just delay BoTW2 for simultaneous release on Switch 2?
  • Should we hold on to the unannounced but nearly complete Mario game for Switch 2?
  • What could we re-release in HD on the switch?
  • Can we make sure to use the same shitty joysticks in Switch 2 so customers need to buy 4 or more.
  • Mario Kart greatest hits?

Report me if I continue to console war
They released 3 games (i think) in 2021, but they have plenty of indie and other 3rd party releases, they are doing great with this output so its working very well.

I think it would be wise if they can enable current gen compatibility with the switch 2.

It should be possible with specs of

8 core Moden ARM cpu
2-4tflop RTX Nvidia GPU
10GB ram @ 150+gb/s
SSD @ 2GB/s
Tensor cores so it has good DLSS + RTX performance.

While they don’t make a lot of money from 3rd party stuff outside of Minecraft do you think they are having sit downs and team meetings about all these acquisitions? The video game industry in general is consolidating and they ARE part of the larger gaming industry. They still get stuff tony hawk, Spyro, crash, elder scrolls, doom, etc. etc.

If more companies, including Sony start buying more stuff do you think that puts more pressure on them? For example. Nintendo lives off its evergreen titles, but theres gonna come a time where nintendo switch sales are gonna slow down, and the Wii-U library padded a lot of those long release gaps. What happens when Mario Kart, Animal Crossing and those games sales inevitably slow down? Do they go back to heavily relying on indies? What if Spartacus and Gamepass start getting so heavy into it that they start hoarding most of them?

I think its interesting how people don’t really consider Nintendos position in all this but surely they will eventually be more effected than people think.
They are probably printing too much money to even bother talking.

No one considers Nintendo a threat, therefore they have nothing to worry about.

Nintendo are a beast. Yet they are treated like also-ran's.

I think Nintendo just continues being Nintendo and no one will bother them.

Zelda Breath of the Wild (along with most of Nintendo's games) is still selling at practically full price literally 5 years after it released. They absolutely rake it in from software alone with those evergreen prices so I doubt they give a shit. Besides, Nintendo has already made it pretty clear they don't give that many shits whether western third parties put their games on Switch.

You're misunderstanding me.

What I'm asking is why would it matter if those companies have a handheld or not?. Right now neither Sony nor Microsoft has a handheld, yet Switch does not get any Sony first party games and will not get Forza, Starfield, Elder Scrolls 6 etc. etc.

So if Switch is already not getting this software, why would Sony or Microsoft launching a handheld make any difference?

Most top 3rd party publishers from console, PC or mobile don't release their top games on Switch, so whatever they do don't impact them.

Nintendo is doing great mostly selling consoles and 1st party games, so they don't give a fuck about 3rd party games, which even if without the top AAA IPs provide Nintendo a huge chunk of revenue and profits.

Nintendo makes quite a big chunk of money from third parties so they definitely don't want to lose that (about half of software sales on Switch are third party).

They could let Microsoft put Gamepass on Switch, but only if they get a very generous cut of the subscription money.
Nintendo's main business is to sell hardware and first party. 3rd party is secondary for them, and MS (even now with Zenimax and ABK) is a tiny part of that 3rd party support. They don't need MS and Gamepass at all. They will continue selling way more consoles and games than Xbox and making more profit than the MS gaming division.

Btw, how many games did lose Nintendo due to the acquisitions of Mojang, Zenimax, Activision Blizzard, Double Fine, Ninja Theory and so on? Did they have any IP on Switch that did stop getting post acquisition games? Or like in PlayStation their games kept coming and getting updates and dlcs as it was the case of Minecraft and the releases of Minecraft Story Mode and Minecraft Dungeons? Didn't MS port the Ori games to Switch and allowed to see the Cuphead Switch port?

MS and Sony don't need to make a portable but indirectly will have them.

Steamdeck and similar PC handheld consoles will be soon in the market. At first they will be too expensive for the mainstream, but after a few years there will be PC handhelds for aprox. the price of a Switch but with the whole PC catalog including MS and Sony games.

It will mean more revenue profit for their PC games without having to invest on a portable hardware or dedicated games/ports.

I get what you are saying now, but it would matter. Right now people are buying the only handheld out there, forced by lack of a decision. If Ms or Sony had one on market, they would look at what exclusives they will offer.

So now:
If I buy a handheld, I can play Mario, Mario kart, Pokémon, etc. I can't play Halo, starfield etc

Then:
I can buy a Nintendo with its exlusives, or I can buy a ms or Sony with its elusives.

Right now option one is the only option, then they have one or the other (or both)

I suppose the PC ports of ms games, assuming they run well and are easy to install/run with a console like experience, this could be true. Not quite at the friendly price of $299 like the Switch and also I doubt valve will build enough for it to really matter. A couple of million units is nothing.......

3rd parties generate a lot of profit for Nintendo so they definitely do give a fuck about them. The loss of Bethesda and Activision Blizzard won't have a big impact on Nintendo, but it is still a loss for them and one they would rather not happen. Getting Skyrim as a Switch launch title and having it shown in the initial console reveal video was pretty important to Nintendo, which is why they put a lot of effort into building an ongoing relationship with Bethesda (a relationship which has now been cut short).

I think Nintendo saw Bethesda as being a good partner who could diversify their platforms' lineups by providing software that Nintendo themselves didn't specialise in.

In terms of lost games, I don't think anything has been lost yet but I do think it will in the future. Switch got the latest entries in the Elder Scrolls, Doom, Wolfenstein, Crash, Spyro, Hellblade, Overwatch, Diablo and Tony Hawk Pro Skater series. I would have expected Switch or its successor to get the sequels to all these games, but after the acquisitions I don't think that is the case (with the exception of Overwatch 2 since that is already announced.)

I see Cuphead and Ori being different situations, since those are not from studios that Microsoft has acquired.

MS and Sony don't need to make a portable but indirectly will have them.

Agreed, I don't expect either to come out with a handheld any time soon.

Your initial statement was : "If MS or Sony launches their own handheld, you can bet the switch 2 is not going to get Minecraft or anything else from that company."

My arguement is that Switch 2 will probably not get things from those companies anyway, regardless of whether they have a handheld or not.

They got mostly late ports of Skyrim, the Elder Scrolls game for smartphones and the cards ones, the Dooms and Wolfensteins. There's nothing else from these IPs cut from Switch. ESO maybe, but I don't see it scaled down and put in a portable that depends on wifi (and not the newest one) so I understand to don't include it on Switch.

If upcoming sequels of these games aren't released on Switch will be because Switch may not be powerful enough to run next gen games so downports would be too difficult/costly/severe, not that MS cockblocked them. If they get crossgen releases/on PC are scalable enough to look acceptable on low specs and a Switch port would be decent enough and doable, pretty likely will be there.

Or well, same goes with Switch 2: some of these games may not run on Switch but may run well on Switch 2 so would be ported there instead. Same goes with the upcoming Dooms, Wolfenstein and ESO.

I see Cuphead and Ori being different situations, since those are not from studios that Microsoft has acquired.
MS didn't acquire them but published them and had the exclusive rights, and in the case of Ori was MS themselves who published it on Switch. In the same way that Microsoft also published the Minecraft updates, plus Minecraft Story Mode and Minecraft Dungeons on PS and Switch.

Your initial statement was : "If MS or Sony launches their own handheld, you can bet the switch 2 is not going to get Minecraft or anything else from that company."

My arguement is that Switch 2 will probably not get things from those companies anyway, regardless of whether they have a handheld or not.
Well, I meant Switch 2 won't get the full Steam/PC catalog from all companies (not specifically MS or Sony), as the Steamdeck and PC handhelds from other companies will get.

MS said they were going to keep supporting the acquired communites in non-MS platforms (Switch and PS) when they acquired Mojang, Zenimax and ABK and if with Mojang and Zenimax they kept releasing on PS and Switch the new games, dlcs and updates of their top franchises that already were there, I assume they will continue doing it with with ABK. In fact Spencer begged to allow them to put Gamepass on PS and Switch.

I assume MS support as 3rd party won't end with PS5 or Switch 1, I understand they mean future Sony and Nintendo consoles too. So -always considering that not every game can be ported to Nintendo devices due to lack of horsepower-, when possible and makes sense the MS games will be on Switch 2 too.

Steamdeck and the other PC handhelds instead since they are basically a PC they are able to run any PC game with no porting or extra approval needed, so any game released by Sony or MS on PC that runs on these specs will be there.

The Switch has a lot of life left in it. I know people love to complain about the hardware here, but for Nintendo 1P it is mostly fine. If they can make games like Luigi's Mansion on this thing then that is more than good enough. BOTW2 should not be more demanding than BOTW so I'm not sure what there is to worry about there. 30 FPS is a shame though.

They don't give a shit about these western acquisitions but they are certainly keeping an eye on the future of Japanese publishers like capcom, squenix, bamco and sega. They deal extensively with capcom and sega and the fact that mega corps are on a buying spree is obviously a point of concern.

Nintendo don’t give a shit tbh. They doing their own thing and know this is folly to compete. So they won’t.

Either Sony or MS is going to waste a shed load and then when they don’t I start profit back going to axe some studios

I'm with you on this but I really think they should be.

This exodus of acquisitions is surely gonna have an impact on them eventually even though currently they dominate targeting a certain audience.

I just feel with Sony and MS dominance over time they will crush Nintendo's market share, it might take 10, 15, 20 years but it could happen.

Key word COULD before people crucify me lol

No I am more worried about the spending spree crashing the games market. AAA games cost a fuck ton to make if they spend loads to purchase these studios and don’t make a return. Then what ? Close them down ?

Nintendo will use other ways to make monies

Theme park
Films
Mobile games
Pokémon
Video games
Consoles
Merchandise

They got enough to keep going plus they don’t really have a debt or so I believe)so they can keep afloat. They been doing video games since the beginning. So I think they know what they are doing.

During the GameCube and Wii days Nintendo basically stepped out the hardware power race. I can’t see them buying big studios more like a few second party studios. That’s it really.

I don't know why you put GameCube there, because it was a highly competitive machine in performance terms when it was released. The CPU was far faster than the PS2 and at least comparable to the original Xbox most of the time (the Xbox was higher clocked, but had generally lower IPC, although better SIMD performance) - the GameCube GPU used EDRAM for the frame buffer and was very fast, and although it lacked fully programmable shaders it had a fancy texture pipeline that let you combine things in ways that even the NV2A in the Xbox couldn't.

Really, the GC was the last time Nintendo tried for performance - and it sold terribly. The Wii used exactly the same basic technology except upclocked 50% and with a new control scheme, was released 5 years after the GC (at which point the basic architecture was really showing it's age) and sold extremely well, which is probably why Nintendo concluded that performance really wasn't that important.

What conversations? They have sold more than 100 million consoles this gen alone with a hardware that is mostly bought to play their exclusives.

They're not competing with MS or Sony... They're on a league of their own.

I guess MS might also have a reason to put games on Switch as a way of reaching the Japanese market? But imagine if there were many games they put on Switch but not PS5, that would be the ultimate EFF YOU to Sony lol.

Nintendo is videogames. They operate differently. I honestly can imagine a videogames industry without Microsoft or even Sony.. . But not Nintendo.
