What game was effusively recommended to you but you ended up thinking it was trash?

Except they are not really that difficult. If you don't understand animations, invincibility frames, boss patterns and the ability to know when to strike or not, that is not the game's fault. It simply means the games are not for you and that you lack that type of a skill and that's the simple truth.

I may not like Breath of the Wild or Skyrim, but that doesn't mean they are bad games either, they are just not for me.

There is a whole community dedicated to No-Hit runs for Dark Souls/Bloodborne/Elden Ring/Sekiro and even speed runs with no-hits. It doesn't make them trash games, they are simply just not for you.
Oh my god lol are you not embarrassed by this post? I say this as someone who has completed Dark Souls 2 twice, DS3 twice, Bloodborne 3 times, and Sekiro and Elden Ring once.

The games are hard.

And no you don’t really need skill to beat these games, I’m sorry if that hurts your ego

Your 100% right. So sorry. You really don't need any sort of skill to be beat any of these so called "hard games" as you say. Especially, Sekiro. You don't even need to parry or learn how to parry at all in that game. It's not like the enemy's health bar can go down quicker or the enemy can get staggered if you parry enough yeah, def not it.

So sorry you are right Mr senpai! Forgive me.

nethack is my favorite dark souls clone
Hollow Knight. While I’m not a huge fan or metroidvania, I was sold on the setting and mood, but naw, that shit was just trash to me. Pointless running back and forth hoping for something that might help with no direction, not my vibe 🤷‍♂️
I'm with you, bud. I've tried SO many times to like this game. The combat is great and I even got better at it after playing Elden Ring and exploiting the "wait for big attack then counterattack" strat, but then I died on a regular enemy and was sent SO far back. No map and no guidance really kills this one for me, at least in the early goings.

All I can say is that fighting games suck on modern controllers! Why can't you use a regular analog stick to play? Smash had that figured out in the 90s!!
Smash Bros. is a party game, not a fighting game. Thankfully no one has ever recommended it to me, so I can't use it in this thread.

but how?

I'm sure you'd already played FF7. Was the remake bad?
It's an insult to the old game unless you are a kingdom hearts fanboy with a taste for third level fanfiction story and a combat that try to have a foot in 2 shoes but it fails miserably both as turn based combat and pure action combat.

But hey, the graphic are nice when you don't notice the random ps1 textures here and there.

Report me if I continue to console war
The horizon zd and to a less extent forbidden west.
Great visuals but the story and missions are boring as hell the majority of the times, the acting is terrible bar a few characters and the combat gets old fast.

Assassin's creed games to, the combat feels so generic and has a lack of polish and identity, the missions are also a snoozefest.

The guy from U2 joined the army?
Jokes aside I was trying to troll the quoted poster, I asked the AI to make "Master Chief in Gears of War" and I LOVE how it did Marcus Fenix's bandana as Master Chief's helmet lol it's scary how good this tech is.

Do you people really buy blindly before even checking some gameplay??
You usually can't tell if a game is good by just watching some gameplay, unless the game is really bad on a fundamental level

Agreed.
Never played the original, so was looking forward.
Story/voice acting was farrr too weaboo and the combat (outside 1 or 2 boss fights) was button mashing nonsense with visual diarheah

lmao if FF7R was "button mashing nonsense" to you then you probably don't know how to play it. That's fine, I took a while to adapt to it too but it isn't even remotely a button-mashing game.

I'll go first:
Gone Home: under the premise of being a great game with an astonishing story and storytelling alike, I shall play the game with little to no info about it so I could experience the full blow... And oh my gosh it was a fffff blow. The game started good and had a really eerie atmosphere with some interesting clues as to what was happening only to end up being the story of an emo lesbian.

---> USE SPOILERS WHERE NEEDED <---

Gone Home was really the first one I was straight up pissed with and not because of the subject matter. More so, and this is a me/them problem of setting and managing expecations, was thinking the story was going to go in a very, very different direction only to be smacked with some after-school, mundane shit.

Celeste is also one I just can't understand the love for.
Gone Home was great but I bet you guys think it was hipster SJW woke trash.

^^^^^ I've never played Gone Home but now I definitely think it's hipster SJW woke trash lol

Sekiro. Everybody was recommending it. I found it to be ugly, frustrating and not at all fun to play. Wasted 60 bucks on it.
Sekiro is epic. It might be frustrating, but that's not necessarily a bad quality, it's part of the process of learning the rules.

Every assassins creed before black flag, played most of the main ones since the first game and never finished them except for 2 years ago where i finished my first ac which was unity then did black flag, origins then black flag, finished revelations because my friend said its the best one but without a stealth button i just cant be arsed

Maybe not all thiings directly recommended, but games that were also talked about positively online etc

The Touryst I found bland and boring, no charm at all
Life is Strange, the most self loving yet self loathing desperate rubbish ever
Bloodstained Ritual of the Night. So much of the game clashed with itself in design, none of the combat was entertaining. Would never ever mention it to a Castlevania fan
Katana Zero. This and Bloodstained maybe me start to research more into games. I never go off of someones review or anything, a game could be 1/10 but if i wanted to play it, I still would but these 2 made me start to dig further before starting games
Carrion, after the 1st 10 minutes, was just the same shit on loop

Some that were more just a dissapointment
Far Cry 3. This might be because I played 4 first, so 3 felt a bit bland after it. Vaas wasn't as amazing as the internetz would lead you to believe
Scarlet Nexus/Nier Automata. Both played a bit...rubbish. Everything to do with bonding in Scarlet Nexus made me eventually just mash through conversations and the combat was awful. Nier was also just lacking. Both of these games attempted to create similar vibes in the look and feeling of their game and world and really, just stank. Quiet and gentle, but dangerous and everything dead. I hope Code Vein is better but maybe these anime vibe games aren't for me which is a shame. Love anime/manga

To be fair I did wait a long, long time to play Skyrim.....perhaps the praise was more earned at release.....but I spent 80% of the game running around the same dungeons killing the same enemies.I have a terrible feeling all these planets in Starfield are going to have lots of caves to explore......oh dear!

Fallen Order, I played through the intro section, thought it was fun. Got to the first planet realized it was like a souls game and turned it off

This is exactly what happened to me. The intro where you are deflecting blaster shots with cool looking scout troopers on screen? I'm in. Within one hour I'm fighting these random monster things with "lightsaber resistant skin" or something. I never even turned it on again...

Monster Hunter.

I viscerally hate that game. The moment to moment movement is absolute dogshit, the controls are slow and unintuitive and the camera is ass.

Part of my anger is down to how much I want to love the game.

Runner up; Okami. Fucking dull.

I'm trying to play Breath of the Wild right now, for the 2nd time. I just don't get it. This combination of mechanics continue to not really speak to me, the world feels somewhat desolate, the combat so far is not at all impressive. Feels like one of my least favorite Zelda games.

It's definitely not trash, but almost certainly the most overrated game I've ever played IMO. Don't think there are that many games that come close in terms of biggest gulf between overall fan/critic consensus (one of the best games of all time, supposedly) and my own opinion (an interesting bunch of mechanics best used in other games, but a mediocre overall package).

Witcher 3, Skyrim, Bioshock, and Mass Effect. I know I know. I do plan to give them more of a shot but so far they haven’t hooked me.

I waited in line for a couple hours for Skyrim. The line was triple the size of Modern Warfare 2, which was pretty big. I played through the campaign back on PS3 and I never had the desire to play it again. It wasn’t bad, but the hype wore off. I’d say Oblivion is the same way. I remember watching GameSpot’s live stream before the game came out and spending countless hours doing quests (stretchy guide in hand). A lot of games from that console generation were best played at the time of their release. There’s 20-30 year old games that hold up better just because they’re much easier to go back to.

I haven’t enjoyed a single Tales game. I’ve had 4-5 of them too. I don’t have a huge hate for them, but they’re not something I’d go out of my way to play. Spec Ops The Line was one where I was super bored with it. I kept hearing things about how the plot was good and I couldn’t do it. I had a better time with Binary Domain.

game plays itself and is terrible
After running in corridors for about 10 hours my friend told me "It gets better after 20 hours."
Like I would pay for a high end escort who would beat the shit out of me & take a dump on my chest hoping I would eventually maybe just get a blowjob.

No thank you.

Not sure why the fps was so bad. Ya the bosses were big and cool, but it should had been able to hold a smooth 30. Expecting 60 fps at that time was asking too much for all games, but it couldnt even hold 30.
Nah it was PS2. SOTC was pushing graphics, physics and open world well beyond anything else on the console

Spec Ops the Line is extremely overrated.

The story obviously is good but the gameplay and set pieces are pretty standard, generic stuff for a shooter. Having good story without good gameplay in a video game is pointless. You need both unless it's an interactive storytelling game, which Spec Ops wasn't.

Elden Ring. Didn't even get to a point u thought it was too hard. Just felt terrible to play and didn't seem to like rewarding me with anything useful for anything I did.

Metal Gear Solid, over and over again. I don't find them in any way enjoyable.
Most recently, GoW 2018. I think it's awful. Clunky, fiddly combat, cheesy characters and a totally unnecessary gear upgrade system. Also the puzzles feel like something from another era. What a disappointment!

Funnily enough Dragon Age Inquisition. But then I went back and played the first 2 for the first time and got so invested that I was happy to go back and grind all that shit out in DA:I
