I just hope it doesn't turn into the old neogaf with power hungry mods that get triggered by everything. Imo the removal of the politics forum was a bad sign and looked like they started to abandon the 'new' neogaf and wanted to appease the reeee crowd to boost membership, but we'll see.

I sympathise with the mods here because their job is very difficult. On one hand they don't want to be heavy handed like Era, but on the other hand it's very difficult to come across as unbiased when there are a huge percentage of Sony fans overrunning the place and reporting anyone who goes against the grain, and also being antagonistic to other platforms. Let's call the truth what it is.
I'm absolutely not saying any company cheerleader is any better than the other, but the fact is it's Sony fans who dominate the forums and thus they kind of run the gamut and write the narrative here. There is destined to be mod moves that are questioned when they have to walk such a tight line. It would much easier for them if there was zero tolerance or it was a free for all, but both of those stances come with major problems of their own. All in all, I think they do a very good job given what they have to work with.

Everything I stated was true though. There is no point for us to turn a blind eye to the fact that this is Sony Gaf, the best we can do is work with what we have. Mods have to get their hands dirty in the console war every single day and bare the brunt of this reality.

Completely agree. All platforms have their extreme and obnoxious fans but there is no doubt one side has significantly more fans than the others. You can easily say both sides do something but one side has 10 people and the other side 50. It's not balanced. All in all the mods are doing the best they can. Avoid being a jerk and you should be fine.

We have let this thread run for a while, and aside from two or three posts the mods have stayed in the background and allowed the conversation to take place. We're going to lock this up in a few hours though, mainly because we don't want this to become the thread where the recently banned return to, and use it as an outlet to either vent or protest.
A lot of points have been made, different points of view have been shared and some posts have supported the recent crackdown, while others have queried it. As you can see from just one thread, the range of feelings and difference of opinion is broad - as you would expect. The rules are not a set of vindictive pronouncements targeted at individuals. They are there for the benefit of everyone - and honestly they are as loose and as least draconian as they can be.
To address certain points made in the thread, but in no particular order, it's probably best to give you an insight into things. Obviously the reports go into a queue/holding area to be reviewed once made. What is probably not visible, is how many rejections we process after reviewing. This takes time - there is no knee jerk response that a report equates to culpability. In a lot of cases, after reading through a few pages or following the chain of quotes, it is clear that the reporter is being a bit over sensitive. We are as fair as we can be, and this also includes those posts which can be construed as console warring.
I point this out to highlight the fact that if a warning is issued for 'console warring', it's not because of one or two posts that have been reported within a day. It's often the culmination of a good couple of weeks where the benefit of the doubt has been given via rejected reports. As you can imagine, it becomes pretty clear to establish a pattern over time with this methodology. And even then, reply bans and deletions are used first before finally issuing a warning. Subsequent to this, warnings come quicker if we do not see a behaviour change. While some people may feel the post they were warned for is fairly benign compared to previous ones, it is often on the back of multiple examples and that particular one is the signal to start calming it down because it's going too far, too fast.
If there was a desire to go and ban twenty or so serial offenders, we would not put the effort in with continuous warnings and in some cases, threats of permanent bans which we extend and issue temporary bans for. There have been so many last, last chances that just aren't seen. You can even see the olive branch being offered in the opening post. The post was deleted quickly and the user was given a nudge to read the current policy and understand they had been given a bit of leeway to adjust.
The recent policy change was after a period of about eight weeks reviewing reports and where they were coming from, and who was making them. As the sticky says, the problems are mainly originating from one small, core group of consistent membership. The constant soft touch moderation versus the number of threads being disrupted was wildly out of proportion. Lots of threads were being ruined and derailed with snide, bitter comments. While some threads may lend themselves to that type of behaviour, it should not infect every thread. What we can say, is that given the list of bans and the names affected, it is no surprise to learn that in most cases these posters have at least 3 warnings and up to 10. There may be two names there, possibly a third after review that can feel unlucky to have fallen foul of the policy at this time, but even then the design of their posts had only one purpose (hence the bans only being one week). I think it is evident that with a number of these users currently on hiatus that most threads have been largely free of drama, or certainly had reduced drama.
With regards to the wider discussion of console warring, a thread was set up in order for those posters here which rarely gets visited. They have also been advised many a time to put each other on ignore or communicate via PMs on how much Jim Ryan or Phil Spencer keeps them awake at night. Many people in this thread (and others) have attested to never receiving warnings despite saying unflattering things or negative things about other platforms. The point of your comment is pretty obvious 99% of the time, even if you try and frame it 'reasonably'. The mod team cut their teeth back in the days of icq, dc+ and irc. We are no stranger to trolls and even those thinking they are being incredibly subtle, are not. They are literally illuminated in glowing neon, while wearing sequins and velour. We try to give wiggle room in that steam can be blown off, but that kind of respect goes both ways. At the moment, with the individuals concerned, this is all take and no give.
Finally, with response to some comments that are issued - users will be treated in exactly the same way they treat the community and/or other posters. If you are responded to in kind and it triggers you, then the point has been made. If this type of language and approach triggers you, then it is likely to be triggering and unpleasant to others. These people are meant to reflect on that and either grow in maturity or be as big as they act and take it on the chin. We cannot stress this enough, we are not teachers or parents. You will be treated as you behave or treat others. If you don't like it, then behave differently. It's all fun and games trying to provoke people with asinine comments until someone uses your exact phraseology back at you, and you fall apart. It should also be noted, that most interactions with us are perfectly pleasant and professional and the above is really the last resort when posters just ignore warnings, or deliberately go into threads to cry or cause a derail. They are basically an illustration of contempt after many interactions, or after someone is identified as a clear troll.
With regards to moderation becoming overbearing, that is not the case. At the moment, we have a firm but temporary policy in place to quell a particular issue. This is no different to previously issued policies - like automatic permanent bans for posting The Last of Us Part 2 leaks in order to spoil other members. This is the level of posters we are dealing with at the moment. We've been here before when people were accusing us of having a Sony bias when Xbox advocates were being banned. We've now come full circle to being paid by Microsoft to ban or warn randomposter3953xx. The reality is that a set of extreme voices were banned over time. With them gone, it is easier to identify and see the next level of extremists or those who have stepped up to wear the mantle. This cycle will likely repeat over time.

I would say the mod team is pretty cool here. We really try our best and I can assure you there is no nefarious plot behind the scenes to shit on MS/Sony/Nintendo.
Also we are busy people like everyone here, so we dont have time to follow a 10 page thread to really get to who and what started it first. We often only see the end of exchanges or what has been reported. So we rely on users to make correct reports and to help us out when we arent able to dig in too deep.
But at the end of the day this is a gaming forum and it is supposed to be a fun place to discuss a hobby. Some of that fun has been eroded by a small set of individuals who are always there to drop a dig in a thread against another platform. Its not going to fly anymore.

I think mods are fighting a losing battle on certain, very narrow fronts... There's always going to be a crowd who want to let their inner streetfighter out when cloaked in the anonymity of the internet. They'll find ways. NeoGAF mods clearly just don't want to come across as a soft cushy place for these kind of people to set up camp - they made that clear when they nuked the echo chamber and killed off conspiracy theorizing.
There are good things about either console, and all the other brands arcing back through the decades, anybody should be able to have caveats in their heads that balance out the more acerbic of their views on the other 'team'.
Those who can't, or are unwilling? Well they're unusual, and this forum explicitly doesn't really want them... to paraphrase something I recently said in another thread I'm sure there's a dark dank hole of a forum somewhere that'll let them rage out with impugnity if they really need to.

I was going to say the same thing earlier today. Some people have used this thread as opportunity to make it their own personal venting thread.
I think everyone has got the gist regarding when to air out opinions or when to do it in PMs. Or when a warning or ban is (or isnt) justified and how it's handled behind the scenes. I think everyone has seen people banned, but also seen when it's reversed because a mod looked it over and unbanned.
Oh well. It is (was) an entertaining thread though.
Side note as per above posts: English muffins are terrible, even when toasted as a breakfast sandwich.

First of all feel free to ban me if you want and don't try to "intimidate" me with your petty warnings and stupid remarks in private messages hiding your coward ass behind "Mod Team". When you delete a post at least have the balls to say who you are.
This was the second time a post of mine got deleted when all i did this time was post an older thread that exposed the PR crap of Phil Spencer

The user was also issued a warning which was "Read the sticky. The only reason you aren't being given a break is because your account is [currently] clean. Next time you will be."
The user was treated fairly and was even extended the benefit of the doubt in light of the recent new policy. If they had actually made the effort to make the point in the same way they have below then there wouldn't have been a problem. But it was more important to try and get a driveby in, in the hope that it would incite some reactions.
With regards to the edit notes, these are just a standard feature of the forum software. Just like this will say post last edited by a moderator. There is no big conspiracy, it is just how the software works, assumedly for privacy reasons we guess. The boxes have limited text values and we struggle to even fit the nuance of what we need to say in there without worrying about signatures etc.
about how "great" Xbox was supposed to be doing at the start of this generation in Japan when this actually shows it's quite the contrary and shows once again that the reality is not exactly as how those executives are trying to make it look like.
So i just quoted that older thread about Phil saying how Japan's Xbox fastest growing market and a smiley and nothing else. But my post gets deleted and i also get a warning by a nobody mod fanboy hiding behind "Mod Team".
