So if you played returnal, you were just sat there thinking how bad it looked?
Didn't that game use some trickeration to get to a convincing 4k output. No one is against DLSS or some type of temporal upscaling that accomplishes the same thing. Some of these techniques can do wonders with a base internal res of 1080p.
People will always judge resolution by the display they are using to display the content, and that's never been more true than the LCD/LED age, where anything less than native is often a mess. When everyone had 1080p screens, that res looked sharp on that screen, take the same image to a 4k screen and it is smeared in Vaseline.
