Why do so many games this year still not have launch dates? Seems odd

We got a barrage of games from late Jan to the end of this month but it seems like starting in April there’s almost nothing big announced. It seems like the first time in a while that we are starting the 2nd quarter with no games announced to come out. Everything just has vague release dates of spring, summer, winter….I’m guessing we’re in for a repeat of 2021 with delays into 2023.

Here is the list of games that still dont have dates.

Cretinously credulous
Yeah second quarter onwards looking pretty barren.
The year did start with a bang though.

I expect a lot of those games will be delayed to 2023. God of war and Starfield will be delayed for sure. No point on rushing development of those AAAA games when there is not enough next gen consoles to buy. A lot of people will not buy them for Ps4 or Xbox one, they will prefer to wait until they have a next gen console... that can't be found now.

Studios are probably a LOT more cautious on the technical side after all the debacles with Dying Light 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Battlefield 2042563675, etc.

Covid and other stuff makes publishers more cautious when announcing a release date than can change easily, look how Nintendo has handled launch dates the last few years

Sony already sold about 17 million PS5s and Xbox sold about 12 million Series X/S.

They both have a big enough market to start releasing next gen exclusive games. No one really knows when the chip shortage will end so it wouldn’t make sense to not release games until it does.

You have to also keep in mind that holding off game releases also creates a big backlog of games to be released. This is why Jan and Feb were so packed with game releases this year.

I wish more games were fully completed or at least 98% done before a release date is announced public ally. Most games don’t require long hype windows. Too many games come in hot. Too many games push back an already announced release date. Still Q2 looks rather barren.

People bitch when dates are announced and the cant be met. People bitch when there are no dates. Hell, people bitch when everything seems to go smoothly because it then doesn't live up to hype. I look foward to the thread creator's perfect, on time, bug free, blockbuster game.

After Cyberpunk I don't blame them. They were finally pressured to release the game in it's state after a few delays cause of pressure, even though it needed another delay.

Starfield is not coming to Xbox one so I’m sure there will be plenty of Series Consoles and PCs out there for those who want to play it.

If you don't provide a release date you can't have delays.

You want to die ??!!

Be careful around StarField. I mentioned that before about not being confident of a 2022 launch (going by recent trends and the fact there's a fucking war going on and COVID still being a bitch) and I damn near got my head blown off.

I get OP's point but there are some issues with the list, I didn't check everything over but, Moss Book 2 came out yesterday. The other VR versions are not dated yet. It looks like a copy and paste from an out of data Wiki. Many of these games have never been given a release window so I wouldn't assume they are 2022.

As for the AA and Indie games on this list there will be a Direct before Pax East where many of these games will get dated. Or at least an "Indie World Showcase." There will be another June/July E3 style direct. Then you have the 10,000 fake E3 indie digital events between June and July. Dating a game now is big news in the indie gaming echo chamber and they save that for events.

I think it is a domino effect.

Studios not really knowing when the games will be released, but also being wary of what else might come out at the same time since other games haven't been announced either.

Do you announce for Christmas and then Christmas is all of a sudden crowded and your game gets lost in the noise?

I think they'll wait for the bigger names to announce and closer to when the games are finished and we'll see a domino effect. We'll probably get a lot of dates around e3.

Bet the vast majority of these games don't see a 2022 release.

Sorry lol I'm a wally 23/7, I'm sure you guessed but I mean the Bomb Rush Cyberfunk game in OP's list. Its an (ultra) homage of Jet Set Radio.
I keep forgetting the name of that game. I like the style for the most part. I had decided to move on after googling that name originally.
