London-based search agency Rise at Seven, who has GAME (UK video game retailer) as client, recently released their research on worldwide "online market share" based on global search data.
.... how the figures were acquired, Rise at Seven claims to have analyzed global search data. It points to the fact that, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the majority of consoles this generation are being bought online, making it easier for them to ascertain the demand in each region.
Some of the findings:
Across the world, figures reveal that Sony’s Playstation is by far the most popular gaming console. Having released their first model back in December 1994, they’ve gone on to claim a staggering 84% of the gaming market, proving once and for all that – in gamers’ eyes – they’re superior to anything Microsoft can throw at them. Playstation gets 148/161 of the countries votes vs Xbox’s 13 countries.
While XBox consoles hold a pretty steady share of the market the world over, in some countries they boast almost complete dominance. In Afghanistan they own 90% of the market, while in Gabon and American Samoa it’s a 77% share. In larger countries, they control 54% of the Chinese market, despite neighbouring Japan being the birthplace of their arch rival.

Extremely interesting. NA sales splits for both PS4 Family and Xbox One family. Something I wasn't aware of. New insider info to me at the very least.
How did previous consoles compete?

....... In the USA, XBox sold 31.39 million consoles, while Playstation sold 37.5 million. That’s as close as Microsoft got to taking the tile, with figures across the rest of the world putting them in a distant second place.

In Europe, the XBox One sold 12.11 million consoles, almost a quarter of the 47.33 million Playstation moved. While in Japan, Sony’s local advantage played in their favour, seeing them sell 9.23 million PS4s compared to a mere 0.12 million XBox Ones. Across the world, 113.7 million PS4s were sold to gleeful gamers, more than double the 48.38 million XBox Ones.

Why is it so hard for xbox to get into Europe,

And that Japan one is just lol, WTF haha.

An old former Microsoft suit probably has the info/potential reasons but I doubt they'll spill it out unless approved by Microsoft. I'm sure they've done the research on that.

Also explains why Jim Ryan and Team Europe got the reigns again, after House (European as well).

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Playstation isn't the reason for Microsoft's collapse, you don't have a open world third person shooter, Halo is delayed, xbox live is getting confusing with gamepass etc. Xbox's problems are their own problems. Basically there's enough room in peoples homes for two consoles.

Xbox is winning China. Game over man. Or maybe it is finally the US has put a trojan spy machine into the Chinese market.

On the visual, why did they use black for both the Xbox countries and for the bodies of water? Nice information design. :messenger_neutral:

EDIT: also, why is each country / brand being presented as some kind of winner-takes-all thing? Is Playstation or Xbox the president of each country? They should've done something like use blue for PS, green for XB, and then done in-between hues to represent the balance of PS vs XB. The more blue a country is, the more PS. The more green, the more XB.

Lmao I doubt Xbox gonna get more than 10% of market share in China. That tells you the reliability of this report.

Cool infographic.

Good to see the OP feel better playing video games because there are random gamers in Greenland who choose the same brand.

We live on Planet PlayStation, basically. Japanese loyalty to PS is amazing compared with US loyalty to Xbox lmao.

They lost all their goodwill with the XB1 Kinect „spycam“ (that‘s what the news here talked about constantly back in the day), the DRM debacle and the lackluster exclusives which are still kind of lackluster.

That and the fact that they gave a quarter shit about EU for a long time, like rolling out features that don‘t even work here (Cortana etc) or having the most underwhelming launch ever (regions where they had strong brand recognition got shafted during XB1 launch). That part they remedied though, they seem to plan globally a lot more.
