Worth getting a Series X if I already have a Series S?

The bear of bad news
I just bought a brand new beautiful television but I already have a Series S and am thinking of upgrading to a Series X so I can play on my OLED.

X really is a beautiful console and with games like Starfield, Forza, Perfect Dark, Elder Scrolls and Immortality on my wishlist I really want to be able show off some next gen games on my tv when I have buddies over to watch football.

Anyone else in a similar situation buy a Series X and did you regret it or were you happy with the upgrade?

I would say yes. maybe even look how much you get for that used Series S and finance the X partially that way.

for someone who does this as a serious hobby the S is only really recommendable as a secondary system.

I have one almost exclusively to play local Multiplayer if someone comes over.

Yes sir. Bought the series X for my main TV in the living room and the S for my bedroom. It's worth the upgrade if you plan on keeping the series S as a secondary. Same experience but games run better and resolution are higher

Get the console. Don't get it simply to show it off. I mean, YOU only spent money on it lol. But I suppose that is what you are showing off. :D

I’d say get the X.

I was going to stick with the S until I wanted to have a disc drive to play blu rays every once in a blue moon, and the extra hard drive space is really useful for gamepass. I still rock a 1080p TV so 4K doesn’t matter to me, but There have been a few games that ran better with the X (Halo infinite runs in full effect mode for example on X)

Pretty much my S is useless now though I’ve loaded my S with my rock band 4 song collection and did the retroarch emulator trick so it technically is still viable in certain situations. I should probably just sell it tbh.

Personally I'd get a ps5.... Both platforms

But if you are intent on sticking to one platform, absolutely get a series x and sell the S

You and your buddies will NEED that Series X to help dull the pain. 😜

Same. And Microsoft is most likely to be the first to offer a mid gen refresh because they were "late" in the last gen to do it.
The mid gen refresh this time around is going to be very powerful consider RDNA3 and future RDNA4 architecture, and we know that Microsoft never back down in terms of raw power. Main while for those that had a Series S just need to "endure" for around 2 years

The only problem they have is how long until they can cut the Xbox one and be next gen only. Having a game on Xbox One will made any next gen "pro" version useless. In the meantime the S will be more than enough.

Judging by last gen, the time when mid gen refresh launches, is the time cross-gen dies (The base model became the new lowest common denominator instead of previous gen)

I agree, Series S might be enough for cross gen games before that happens

If you can easily afford it then sure, why not? Might as well get the best out of the OLED TV. Do it!

Absolutely not. Complete waste of money. CPU is about the same and that is what matters

We are still in cross-gen the 12TFlops would be for show

I have the money and wont get a Series X because its pointless by the time that level of power is truly being used a refresh with a better CPU will be out

But the problem is that with covid this gen is slower than the last one. I don't see Microsoft go from Xbox one to a "pro" version and no game made with the Series X as a baseline. The message would be hard to pass.
"Thank you for buying a Series X, but all our next gen will be made with the XXX in mind. Sorry:messenger_sunglasses:"
Sony have the PSVR 2 to sell and already have a few PS5 only games so they can afford to take their time. But Microsoft needs to have at least 1 or 2 hits before they can think about the refresh imo. And it would be hard to convince all the studios they have just bought to change their ambitions so fast. So 2 years seem premature to me. And 3 or more would be too late because Sony woud be ideally placed to make his pro version and Nintendo by then would be well in the Switch 2 life. I hope they launch first to put pressure on Sony.

Rookie season, I personally think he'll be fine.

Missed opportunity to point out two division titles, 3 playoff appearances, and one playoff win in literally 15 years

And the playoff win was against one of the only teams with a losing record in playoff history, the next game they lost to.... The packers on their way to a championship 😂

I was a Series S owner but sold it and now a proud owner of Series X. Even just booting up and getting a 4K dashboard is better. :p

This is like asking if it's worth getting a PS4 Pro to go alongside your PS5.

Buy a Series X and sell the S. The S is inferior anyway.
Except the PS4 Pro is from an entirely different generation from the PS5 and the XSS is from the same generation as the XSX. A more apt comparison is a PS4 Pro to go along side a PS4.

This shit again.

Should be bannable at this time. Just like 9.XX

Either teraflops matter or they don't. No middle ground.

I doubt there will be an upgraded midgen refresh, a die shrink refresh maybe.
What reason do they have to do midgen refreshes?
Lastgen needed refreshes because 4K blew up mid generation and they needed consoles that could actually utilize these 4K TVs.
This gen the consoles are bleeding edge, they already have HDMI 2.1, they are 4K120 capable we havent really seen them sweat heck half(90%) of the first party developers havent actually made nextgen only games.

For Sony the PS4 pro was about player retention. And it helped with PSVR. I think that they had moderate sucess with it. Good sales and players got up to 4 years of games that were better on it( Horizon Zero Dawn, TLOU2...). For Microsoft it was about winning back theirs fans after a disastrous Xbox One launch. They choose to let Sony go 1 year early and be sure to loose all possible sales comparisons with the Pro and put the best console they could. This is really one of the best moves Spencer did.
Now both have this precedent looming over their heads. Can Microsoft allow Sony to go first again ? Can Sony not make a PS5 Pro and be suprised by Microsoft when they do one ?
It is true that few games use the power of the new consoles. But like last generation Sony could use a Pro version to help with PSVR2, and make players that want to go PC to stay longer. And a PS5 Pro would not be too costly and help with Raytracing and make a 4k60 easier for Sony 1rst party teams. They have the PS4 Pro data to know if that move helped them or not after all.
For Microsoft they need the "power" argument in my opinion. And so can't afford to be beaten again if Sony do a PS5 Pro. Is a mid gen refresh a certainty or a necessity? Of course not. But if one does it and the other do not they have all to win and nothing to loose( expect money but right now both are pretty good). Sony had to propose a Gamepass equivalent. So I can see it happen the same way for the mid gen refresh : one does it and the other have to follow.

Definitely get the Series X. I have both X and S and a C1 OLED and the X is much better.

If you can find one I'd say get a PS5 instead. I use my PS5 for exclusives. The S for Gamepass and 3rd party. I'll probably upgrade to the X for Starfield, but the S and PS5 is a pretty good set up.

Report me if I continue to console war
If you a TV bigger then 40inches seriesS will start to look no so great.

It depens on the game though, i still play 1080p games on my 4k 50inch screen and it still looks very good.

So play the seriesS on your new TV and see if the image quality bothers you. Some comparison videos between the S and the X may also help.

If you're interested in not playing with a neutered console anymore and want actual Ninth Generation performance, grab the Series X.

I only have a 1080p TV and decided on the SeriesX mainly due to the bigger storage although it's there and ready for when I do upgrade my TV as well. Series S is a capable machine for 1080p but if you have a top of the line TV then it deserves a premium console as well. That said, if you are happy with the SeriesS then don't feel that you need to upgrade. Like a lot of the posts in this thread there are those out there wishing it to fail and have been saying for a while just wait until "insert arbitrary condition" when the SeriesS will be unable to cope. Series S has proven to be what it set out to be so far, a 1080p next gen console whereas the Series X is a 4K next gen console. Once the games are being designed for the Series consoles only and last gen support is dropped it will be fine. Any performance gains we see from using the newer hardware and newer methods not possible on last gen will be reaped by BOTH the Series X and Series S equally.
