Wow, Casino

I must have watched this movie three times in a week.

It has become one of my favorite movies of all time.

The dialogue, the acting, the cinematography, the narration, almost everything about this movie is perfect.

I thought I already made a thread about this movie here but I can't find it so maybe I did it and if I did I apologize and mods, you can delete this.

Plus, I live right here in Las Vegas and many of the locations are one short bus ride away that you see in the movie.

I bought it on sale for $5 on Vudu a couple years back so occasionally check that website for sales.

But I really just wanted to mention how great this movie is and if you haven't already seen it, do yourself a favor and watch it ASAP.

I know it's wrong but....

I actually felt bad for Lefty Rosenthal at the end. To see him lose his empire and go back to being a sports handicapper. But then again, Lefty got lucky thanks to the metal plate under the drivers seat.

This movie was so amazing. The way it was a serious movie based on actual events that managed to have quite a bit of humor as well.

It's well-made and held my attention for the entire running time, which is not easy for a movie that long, but it's not up with Scorsese's best. Different director (Leone), but have you seen Once Upon a Time In America? Now that's a four hour epic.
I haven't seen any of those. I'm actually new to Martin Scorsese films. Casino might be my first one.

I plan on watching the Irishman tomorrow.

Casino was unfairly overlooked because its so similar to goodfellas, but people are starting to realize that this is a masterpiece just like Goodfellas before it. No one makes movies like this anymore. Not even Scorsese who struggled to give The Irishman the same kind of energy. Maybe its the setting. Casino is set in the perfect mob town while the Irishman is more about politics and corruption.

Id even say Casino has far more memorable scenes than Goodfellas. The whole movie reminds of me that iconic helicopter scene in Goodfellas, except Casino is full of those high energy scenes thanks to Joe Pesci getting his own monologues and voice overs this time around. He's a complete animal in this movie, but the guy in real life was even worse. Look him up.

P.S Vudu has been my goto source for $5 4k UHD rentals for a while. I love their $5 sales too. Have like 40 movies on there. All in UHD.

In my opinion Casino is up there with la confidential as the movie that should have won best picture

Leone must have the best track record of any director
Last days of Pompeii is Ok but how much is him
The colossus of Rhodes is a solid first effort
A fistful of dollars really defined what we want from a western, for a few dollars more delivered again but with a hell of a lot of heart and soul, the good the bad and the ugly did everything perfectly and once upon a time in the west closed the book on the western genre ,
Once upon a time in America competes head to head with America's best mafia films
And duck you sucker ...is ... a ...serviceable I guess, still a good movie but it has to be compared to his other 5 its good but I want more than good from ol'sergio

I remember going to see this on release in the theater, I thought it was great but I remember the press at the time was middling. Sharon Stone was awesome and the only movie she made off the back of Basic Instinct that was ever good.

Great Scorsese movie but I like Goodfellas better too.
I remember the scene where Sharon Stone makes a scene to De niro because he forces her to carry a portable phone at all time so he can track her, and she says "I was at a dinner and the thing kept ringing i was mortified". Like this huge meth addicted whore was ashamed of all the noise she made and of being an annoyance to people around her (at least that's how i understood it).
Everytime i hear a moron having a phone convo on headspeaker nowdays i can't help but think that this human being has less manners than a meth head whore.

Oh and scar face.

This isn’t me being pretentious this is just cinema certified classics.

Random thought.
I don’t know where you are based but if you can find the schedule for a U.K. movie Channel called Film4. See what they are showing and if a film takes your fancy. Stream rent etc the movie.

Different subject matter but Casino and The Aviator are pretty good companion films, I think.

FYI Once Upon a Time in America might well be the greatest American film, however. It's crazy that a film like that would ever get made but it was a different time.

Oh yeah also hard boiled and the killer
Dude i watch Hard Boiled last night :messenger_tears_of_joy:
I didn't remember how much Tequila drank throughout the movie, Chow Yun Fat must have been having a pretty good time filming this :messenger_grinning_sweat:
I'm on a John Woo binge that started 2 days ago with Hard Target. I wanted to watch a Van Damme movie, but it just made me want to see more of Woo's crazy style.
So far Hard target, Bullet in the Head, a better tomorrow 1 and 2, and Hard Boiled.
All goddam classics, all aged really poorly (those slow motion and still shots omg), but what a genius... He invented the 90s actionner single handedly

I can't watch Casino. I've tried to a couple of times but the soundtrack is so overbearing with the songs changing every 20 seconds. Scorsese did the same thing in Goodfellas but he really turned that shit up to 11 in Casino. I wish they'd edit it all out and just have a normal soundtrack. Anyways, my mafia recommendation is The King Of New York. It's my favorite Christopher Walken movie. The scene where he puts on Tito's gloves is amazing. It's got a great cast - Steve Buscemi, Wesley Snipes, Laurence Fishburne, Giancarlo Esposito, and a killer soundtrack with Schoolly D

From a young age I was very into movies. I watched a ton of stuff but the first film that made me realize, by myself, that there was more to cinema than telling a story (and provoking emotions in the process) was Casino. I knew jack shit about technique but it was clear to me this was more dynamic than anything I had ever seen.

This is Scorsese going full virtuoso, harsh cuts, music timing, multiple narrators, transitions, all kinds of crazy camerawork (dynamic crane shots, tons of steadicam, freezes, speed ramps, whip-pans, etc.). It's so rich and works perfectly to display the opulence (and some corniness) of Vegas and their lives.

On the other hand, seeing Casino before Goodfellas made me to never fully appreciate the latter.

Strong list, and a few of those are on my "To watch" list, but I have seen Goodfellas. That's what I mean, if Casino rivals it in terms of quality then I'm in for a treat!

I think it does but to me it felt like a retread of goodfellas but not in a bad way.

What makes the fact it got made crazy or surprising? I'm just curious

It's four hour long epic art Hollwood film, made by Sergio Leone, a legendary auteur who would never make another film. These kinds of films simply don't get made anymore. Even at that time the studio butchered the original cut of the film because it was considered unreleasable. It wasn't until years later later we got the better cut.

I finally saw Once Upon A Time In America this year and I have to say - I didn't enjoy it. I made sure to watch the best cut too. I couldn't get invested in the story or the characters.

My favorite Leone film I've seen so far is A Fistful of Dollars.

BadBurger

Is 'That Pure Potato'
I always thought the first half was a very strong movie with a compelling story and all, but in the second half it kind of devolves into typical mob schlock. But this may be because I saw it many years after its release when like 30 other movies tried to ape it.
