Your top 10 essential titles from the PS2 and GameCube libraries, combined.

So, the premise is this: Xbox Series consoles can legally play PS2 and GCN (and many other consoles') libraries at boosted resolutions, but I don't just want to dump all of my meticulously purchased-then-archived PS2 and GCN games from over the years, because I've done that kind of thing before and ended up not playing any.

So I'm going to limit myself to ten titles.

And i think this is a pretty good little exercise.

So, I invite you guys to join me in this, and come up with a combined hybrid list of PS2 and GCN titles that you would choose, if you were limited to 10 such titles.

My list, which i can revise, which I'm trying to keep free of games I've completed too many times:
* Exceptions

1) Star Wars Rogue Squadron 3: Rogue Leader (GCN)
2) Metal Arms: Glitch in the System (GCN)
3) SSX 3 (GCN)*
4) Gladius (GCN)
5) Time Splitters 2 (GCN)
6) GTA: SA (PS2)*
7) Gran Turismo 3 - A Spec (PS2)
8) Ico (PS2)
9) Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies (PS2)
10) Silent Hill 2 (PS2)

I didn't enter MGS titles because i own the HD collection on like 4 platforms

Also I'm trying to avoid other games that have easily accessible HD remakes, such as Shadow of the Colossus, Jak, Sly, and R&C (all on Vita)

Very interesting exercise! Let’s see...

Metroid Prime (GC)
Metroid Prime 2 (GC)
Resident Evil 4 (GC - but it’s available everywhere so maybe redundant?)
Klonoa 2 (PS2)
Xenosaga Episode 3 (PS2 - the best gameplay-wise, story-wise you’d need the full trilogy ofc)
F-Zero GX (GC)
Viewtiful Joe (GC)
Dragon Quest 8 (PS2)
Silent Hill 3 (PS2)
Paper Mario TTYD (GC)

Kept the list one game per franchise. I've probably fucked up here, but these are the ones that came off the top of my head so obviously are near and dear to my heart. They aren't in any particular order. Pissed off Beyond Good and Evil, Paper Mario TTYD and Viewtiful Joe are missing. Sorry I just had to name drop them.

These aren't what I'd recommend as essentials to check out as some kind of games list with historical relevance, but rather my personal favourites. However games like Ico certainly fit the bill.

Metroid Prime
Wind Waker
Resident Evil 4
Metal Gear Solid 2
Okami
GTA San Andreas
Mario Kart DD
Final Fantasy X
Ico
God of War 2

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Good systems with high level games, top 10 from that generation is a challenge. When you think of Gamecube the Zelda games are a good place to start. Ocarina of Time is a big open world game, very RPG like, Wind Waker has unusual graphics, Twilight Princess is intriguing. Another great game with a ton of respect, it's style is Ocarina of Time on steroids'. PS2 was a decade of excellence from SONY, games like socom were impressive, twisted metal, sly cooper, final fantasy, GTA, the sport games as well. Metal Gear Solid, Shadow of the Colossus, you see Ratchet, Guitar Hero, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Resident Evil, Splinter Cell, just an outstanding console.

Are people seriously recommending emulating games like Okami and REmake when there are native ports for Xbox? I can't imagine they would play or look better.
Yeah my list basically has all been remastered at this point:

-RE4
-REmake
-Zelda WW
-Zelda TP
-Okami
-Shadow of the Colossus
-DMC games
-MGS games

I guess the only ones that haven’t been remastered are the Metroid Prime games.

So disappointing that it took this many posts to have Eternal Darkness on a list. It's as essential as a Gamecube game gets.

Asked this of another earlier, why do you prefer gt4 to 3? Just to help me choose between the two...

Surprised at more Icos than SOTCs
Ico's the better and more influential game, though it has less widespread appeal. SOTC just missed the cut for me, forgot to put it in my honorable mentions as it's still a masterpiece despite being my least favorite Ueda title.

No doubt an Ico vs SOTC poll would end up with the latter winning.
